NFL Divisional Round Predictions

This weekend provides another step for 8 teams to ascend to Super Bowl 58 which will be played at state of the art Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Sunday, February 11th at 5:30 PM CT on CBS. No.1 seeds the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are in action against upstarts the Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers respectively. The Chiefs and Bills resume a rivalry with, amazingly, Patrick Mahomes playing his first road playoff game ever in the National Football League. That’s 15 games before this Saturday. He’s defeated the Bills twice in Arrowhead Stadium in the postseason. He’s on the road this time.

And the story of the year, the Detroit Lions, which won their first playoff game since January 8th, 1994, 32 years, will host the Tampa Bay Bucs at Ford Field.

Here are predictions for this weekend’s contests.

Last week: SU-4-2, ATS, 3-3

Houston is a thrilling young team led by their electric 22 year old rookie quarterback Coleridge Bernard “C.J.” Stroud. It’s not out of the question for the Texans to upset the Ravens, but I’ll take Lamar and his stellar defense in a close one however.

Niners by 9 1/2

I really like this electric young team led by their stellar 25 year old quarterback and Bakersfield, California native Jordan Love to possibly pull off an improbable upset in the Bay Area. The Niners have the horses for sure, so it’s hard to go against them. It was beyond stellar what the Packers did in Dallas last Sunday in a 48-32 victory. Love threw for 272 yards and 3 TDs, and, like Stroud against the Browns last Saturday, posted a 157.2 quarterback rating. 158.3 is perfect, so that’s almost a perfect performance. It seemed perfect. But I’ll take Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuels and Nick Bosa to advance and host the NFC Championship Game. Still, I like the Packers to make them earn it, and the Packers future is very bright. Could be rainy Saturday in Santa Clara, so I’m going with a lower scoring game.

I don’t like what I’m seeing from Jared Goff and the Lions. I Love what I’m seeing from them. Bake Mayfield is playing at a high level as well, but give me Goff and the Lions to move on to the NFC Championship Game, which would be played in Detroit if the Lions and Packers win. If the Niners win, the game will be played on the left coast regardless of who wins the Lions-Bucs.

That’s just astounding to me that this is Patrick Mahomes first road playoff game after playing in 15 straight home playoff games. He’s 12-3 in those playoff games. Both teams braved the bitter January weather at their respective stadiums last weekend to emerge victorious, both in impressive fashion. Always hard to go against Mahomes. I’ve been burned by him before, including last season in Super Bowl 57 against the Eagles, a 38-35 Chiefs’ victory. But I like Josh Allen this time. Give me Allen and the Bills to win this encounter with the home field advantage as the difference.

Quick note on the Great One, Kalen DeBoer and National Football League Playoffs Predictions

Coach Nick Saban leaves an indelible legacy in University of Alabama football lore that may never be duplicated. He and Coach Bryant are the greatest of all time, but the difference was Bryant could recruit and put 140 players on his sideline, while Saban could only field 85 scholarship players on one team. The way Coach Saban did it with the recruiting restrictions he encountered was remarkable in and of itself. It’s hard to compare eras and definitively say that one legend was better than the other. They both won six national championships, while Coach Saban also won a national title at LSU in 2003 for a total of 7. But it’s 2024 and Coach Saban has been the standard for 17 years in Tuscaloosa. Coach Saban was magnificent. His legacy may be untouched in college football. He’s certainly the hallmark for all college football coaches.

He leaves gigantic shoes to fill, and that’s quite an understatement, but I don’t know how else to put it. What he did at Alabama with his prolific records, 123 NFL draft picks, 44 in the first round, 4 Heisman Trophy winners in Mark Ingram (2009), Derrick Henry (2015), DeVonta Smith (2020) and Bryce Young (2021), is beyond reproach. And that’s not even close to all of his accomplishments; the SEC titles, the wins, and this one very significant stat that seldom gets noticed: Coach Saban coached 656 players who earned their undergraduate degrees from the Unversity with 103 of those players earning Masters degrees. That is astonishing. The Great One will be sorely missed. It’s hard to see him go.

He has handed over the reins to former Washington Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer, and my initial reaction is that this is a home run hire. If Coach DeBoer can recruit in the southeast, he will be supremely successful. He can certainly develop and motivate. It’ll be a challenge locking horns with Kirby and Hugh on the recruiting trail along with the many other highly talented and relentless SEC and national coaches. But with the right staff, DeBoer can excel. I like this a lot. More on the Great One and his legacy and the DeBoer hire coming up in the near future.

NFL Wild Card Predictions

I’m not going to be too extensive this week, but will hopefully, like a friend of mine said about Eric Clapton one time “Give you what you want.” I’m highly intrigued and invested in these Wild Card games. We all love college football. The Tide and the Tigers along with other SEC and key national teams dominate the headlines and our interest. But the NFL is extraordinarily interesting in the postseason. The level of play is ramped up to elite status. There are electric atmosphere throughout NFL stadiums that host a playoff game. There are stellar matchups during this long MLK Day weekend. Here are my predictions for this weekend’s contests.

Last Year in the Playoffs

Straight Up:11-2

ATS: 8-5

Didn’t get Super Bowl 57 right as the great Mahomes and the Chiefs defeated Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and the Eagles, 38-35. Super Bowl LVIII will be @ Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Sunday, February 11th, at 5:30 PM CT on CBS.

Fourteen teams are competing for the privilege of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy late Sunday Night, February 11th. There will be six wild card games this weekend as the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers have earned byes by virtue of each team finishing as the top seeds in their respective conferences. Here are my projected winners this weekend.

This should be a hardly fought contest, but I like DeMeco and C.J. at home to eke the game out and move on to the Divisional Round next week.

It won’t be that much easier on the Chiefs, but they are more used to this in January. Give me Mahomes and the Chiefs to move on. However, I don’t see prolific offensive numbers in these brutal conditions. The Chiefs play excellent D.

Just like the Steelers in the conditions in the playoffs. The Bills can handle it, too, of course, but the Steelers always have some magic in the postseason.

The Eagles have fallen on hard times this year as the season has progressed. Michigan vs. Washington, College Football National Championship Preview/Prediction, Luke Vid

This should be electric tonight at NRG Stadium in Houston with the 14-0, number 1 ranked Michigan Wolverines squaring off with the Number 2 ranked and 14-0 Washington Huskies at 6:30 PM Central on ESPN.

Michigan is one of the most controversial teams in recent memory led by their controversial coach. But their stellar performances this season, including their 27-20 victory over Alabama in overtime last Monday, have proven this team is for real.

While Michigan will try to bury you with physicality, the Washington Huskies like to electrify you. The Huskies and their dynamic offense defeated the No.3 Texas Longhorns in the Sugar Bowl semifinal game last Monday Night, 37-31. Another upset for this constantly underrated, undervalued team.

I’m looking for a classic tonight. Here is a look at the teams, the game and a prediction.

Record 2023 Season

Straight Up: Bowls 8-7, Overall, 202-54, 79% .

ATS: Bowls: 9-6. Overall, 122-128, 49%

Inside the Numbers

Michigan

Defeated No. 10 (at the time) Penn State on the road on Saturday, November 11th, 24-15. Defeated then No.2 Ohio State 30-24 at the Big House on November 25th. And then, last week, the Wolverines defeated the Crimson Tide in overtime at the Rose Bowl in the first semifinal game, 27-20.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has completed 230-of-314, 73% for 2,851 yards, 22 TDs against 4 ints. His clutch completion to superb running back Blake Corumon on 4th and 2 with Michigan trailing the Crimson Tide, 20-13, and 3:19 left in the game at the Alabama 40 yard line, was quite possibly the play of the season. McCarthy then hooked up with electric receiver Roman Wilson for 29. McCarthy and Wilson tied the game, along with the extra point, which was an issue for the Wolverines, on a 4 yard TD toss. He steps up when his team needs him the most.

Running back Blake Corum is also a spectacular player and the guy who makes the Wolverines go. Corum caught a TD pass versus the Crimson Tide last Monday and took it in from 17 yards in a highly physical run in the first overtime that was the game winning score for the Wolverines as they stopped Bama on its ensuing possession. On fourth and goal at the Michigan 2, Bama OC Tommy Rees called for a run/pass option. But the snap was so bad, that all Jalen Milroe could do was pick it up off the ground to his right and try to run it in. Michigan stopped him and moved on to tonight. Corum rushed for 1,111 yards and 26 TDs this season.

The key wide receivers are solid. Wilson has posted 45 receptions on the season with 12 TDs. He was a stud against the Crimson Tide. His 29 yard reception from McCarthy was terrific as he leapt between two Crimson Tide defenders, pulled down the ball, and ran it to the Bama 4 yard line. From there he took it in from 4 yards off a pass from McCarthy. Cornelius Johnson has 44 receptions for 579 yards but only 1 receiving TD.

The Michigan defense is a machine. It has the lowest scoring defense in the country allowing only 9.8 per game. That’s serious old school. They are a force that the Huskies offense will have to reckon with.

Washington

For the Huskies, their great quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., was prolific this season and should have won the Heisman in my opinion. But his team is playing for it all, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels is getting ready for the NFL draft. I’d rather be Penix.

Penix completed 336-of- 504 passes, 67%, for 4,648 yards 35 TDs against 9 ints. When he gets time, which is most all of the time as the offensive line won the Joe Moore Award for the most outstanding offensive line in the country, he picks teams apart. He’s a pretty decent runner if coach Kalen DeBoar and OC Ryan Grubb want to mix it up a little. His running back, Dillon Johnson, from Mississippi State and Greenville, Mississippi (I’ve got a good friend from there, who I went duck hunting with a while back on the Mississippi Flyway where we hit our limit at 7 AM) has rushed for 1,162 yards and 16 TDs. He’s a little banged up heading into tonight, but said he’s ready to “rock’n roll.”

Then the o line is superb and the guys in the perimeter are the best in the country. The great Rome Oduze has caught 87 passes for 1,553 yards and 13 TDs. Ja’lynn Polk has added 65 receptions for 1,122 yards and 9 TDs. Jack Westover has 41 for 391 and 4 TDs, and Jalen McMillan has 39 for 526 and 4 TDs.

Their defense may not be as stellar as Michigan’s, but they’re physical and scrappy.

So it’ll be Michigan’s power versus Washington’s skill and speed. However, both teams can do both in reality.

Coaches

James Joseph Harbaugh

60 years old. Born in Toledo Ohio, December 23rd, 1963.

College, 143-52 (73%). National Football League, 49-22-1 (68%)

Bowls: 4-7; 1-2 CFP: 5-3 NFL Playoffs. Lost to his brother John and the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl 47 in the 2011 season. Jim was coaching the 49ers. Both of those teams have a good shot to reach this year’s Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11th at 5:30 PM CT on CBS. John Harbaugh is still excelling at Baltimore and Lamar Jackson is the most elite player in the NFL right now.

James still shows a lot of interest in the NFL. With openings at the LA Chargers, the Washington Commanders, the Carolina Panthers and the Las Vegas Raiders, he’s highly sought after by NFL teams themselves. Harbaugh hired agent Don Yee on New Year’s Eve. Yee has represented Tom Brady and Sean Payton, so that’s interesting. Harbaugh is a terrific motivator, recruiter and a pretty good in game coach. He made some good decisions against the Crimson Tide, especially his 4th and 2 call late in the game with his team down 20-13 that worked.

Kalen Douglas DeBoer

49 years old. Born in Milbank, South Dakota on October 24th, 1974.

Record in College: 104-11 (90%, are you kiddin me? That’s beyond elite).

Bowls: 2-0. 1-0 in CFP with last Monday’s victory over Texas, which his team also defeated in last year’s Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antone in his first season in Seattle. He won 3 NAIA National Championships as head coach at Sioux Falls (South Dakota)from 2005-2009. He was 12-6 at Fresno State, going 9-3 in 2021 and is 25-2 at Washington.

Phenomenal offensive mind and spectacular person. He’s so likable that you want him to excel.

Final Analysis and Decision

The line has gone up from 4 1/2 this morning to 5 1/2. I’m not sure what the gamblers are thinking because the Huskies have been doubted all season, and they have come through every time. They were a 9 1/2 point underdog to Oregon in the PAC-12 Championship Game and won; they were a 4 1/2 point underdog to Texas and defeated the Longhorns in the Sugar Bowl. To me, Kalen DeBoar is a better “college” football coach than Jim Harbaugh. I picked against them versus Oregon and against Texas. I’m not going to do it again. Give me DeBoar and the Huskies.

Who will be the Tide’s opponent? This game is going to be electric. Sark has become one of the best coaches in the game, but Kalen DeBoer of Washington is right there with him. It’s hard to go against quarterback Michael Pennix Jr. and the Huskies. They’re so resilient and so likeable. But, I’ll take the Longhorns in a classic offensive shootout. Is Florida State going to even try? They were deflated by the difficult decision by the committee to exclude them from the Playoff, and have really taken it to an extreme to voice their outrage with the decision. Tulane was having another terrific season, but was deflated by SMU in the American Conference Championship Game at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, 26-14. SMU, coached by Rhett Lashlee, played an excellent game and finished the season 11-2. The Ponies play Boston College tomorrow at 11 AM CT in the Fenway Bowl in ESPN. To add insult to injury, the Green Wave’s head coach, Willie Fritz, took the Houston Cougars job and quarterback Michael Pratt opted out of the game to get ready for the NFL draft. There have been several transfers as well. That’s too much to overcome. VA Tech quarterback Kyron Drones threw for 1,993 yards, 15 TDs against only 3 ints. He also rushed for 642 yards and 4 TDs. Running back Bhayshui Tuten led the team in rushing with 727 yards along with 8 TDs. On defense, d end Antwaun Powell-Ryland, 6’3”, 242, posted 9 1/2 sacks for -77 yards. Cornerback Dorian Strong added three interceptions. I like VA Tech here. They defeated UVA to finish off their season 55-17 in C’Ville, and Tulane just doesn’t have a strong enough roster in this game with Fritz gone , Pratt opting out and several other players transferring.

UNC has several transfers/opts outs including quarterback Drake Maye, who opted out to prepare for the draft. I’m tired of writing this, but it’s the landscape these days. Maye threw for 3,608 yards, 24 TDs against 9 ints. He also rushed for 9 TDs. But he had his struggles towards the end of the season, and I’m not sure he can be that prolific of an NFL quarterback. It’s a whole other level up there and it only gets tougher. He’s expected to go in the top 7 or 8, maybe top 3, so it’ll be interesting to see how he pans out. Conner Harrell will take over under center for the Tar Heels and he is only 4 of 6 for 71 yards and a 7. And stud receiver Tex Walker, who caught 41 passes for 699 and 7 TDs, is opting out as well. It was a struggle for the Heels defense towards the end of the season too as they finished 72nd in scoring defense in the country. They gave up 39 points in a 39-20 loss to N.C. State to close out the season. They gave up an average of 405 yards per game, 95th out of 130 in the country. They are limping into Bank of America Stadium. The Mountaineers, under resurgent coach Neal Brown, won their final two games of the regular season 42-21 over Cincy and 34-31 @ Baylor. Quarterback Garrett Greene finished the season with 2,178 passing yards, 15 TDs against only 4 ints. Greene also rushed for 708 yards and 13 TDs. RB CJ Donaldson added 798 yards and 11 TDs. Linebacker Ben Cutter posted 4 ints on the season to lead the defense. West Virginia was 69th in yards allowed per game at 382. They were 76th in scoring defense giving up 27 points per game. So their scoring defense was worse than the Tar Heels and they were not too much better than UNC in total defense. But with UNC’s defections, the lack of a Tar Heels defense will be more pronounced in Charlotte, moreso than with the Mountaineers. I like the team with the momentum right now, and West Virginia has it and UNC has just lost too much.

Cardinals by 6 1/2

Louisville ended the season poorly after a really solid first 10 games. They were 10-1 heading into a home game finale against rival Kentucky, but lost 38-31. Then they played FSU in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte and it was one of the ugliest games of the season as the Cardinals lost 16-6. FSU has been irate ever since being snubbed from the Playoff. I empathized with them at first, but still believed the Crimson Tide was the better team, particularly without quarterback Jordan Travis. With Travis, they had a strong argument, But they looked terrible themselves on offense in the Louisville game. Since then they’ve lost it, going after everybody they can think of in their gripes with the selection committee. They are now suing the ACC to get out of the conference after Governor Ron DeSantis tried to sue the selection committee for $1 million. It’s out of control.

But Louisville is in better shape than USC. Quarterback Caleb Williams, as expected, opted out. He’s preparing for the NFL draft and may very well go No.1, but he didn’t have that stellar of a season, and his ability to excel in the pros is still uncertain. I thought Justin Fields would excel and he’s really struggled, so the Bears are probably looking for another quarterback. Bryce Young has had a rough year for Carolina, but had his best game Sunday versus the Packers throwing for 312 yards and two TDs in a 33-30 loss, so maybe his fortunes are turning around. Mac Jones, who was so good at Alabama his senior year, has had a miserable time in New England. So there is no guarantee/sure fire precedent that a stud college QB will excel in the NFL. In this game, USC just doesn’t have the defense, the players, with transfers and opt-outs, or the motivation. Williams’ backup, Miller Moss, has only completed 23 of 32 passes for 309 yards, and a TD. Give me the Cardinals despite their struggles at the end of the regular season.

This line has moved drastically in the last week as A&M was a three point favorite a week ago. With 13 transfers, A&M is really struggling coming into this game. With a program that showed so much promise when it landed the top recruiting class ever recorded in 2021, which the Crimson Tide overtook in 2023, it’s been a disastrous time under now fired coach Jimbo Fisher. Co-defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson, who is heading to Syracuse to be its’ defensive coordinator under new coach Fran Brown, who came to the ‘Cuse from Georgia where he was a stellar defensive backs coach and the number one recruiter in 2022, and has added a very good recruiting class especially their transfer class, will be the coach for A&M in this game. Robinson and his defensive coaches will have to find a way to stop Cowboys’ all world running back Ollie Gordon, who rushed for 1,614 yards and 20 TDs. With all the attrition at A&M, this is too much to ask even though third string quarterback Jaylen Henderson is pretty good as he threw for 704 and 6 TDs against 2 ints starting at the end of the season. The Aggies are missing key pieces on offense and defense. Their stud defensive tackle Walter Nolen, among other players has transferred and is heading to Ole Miss. Lane added the No.1 transfer class in the country in 2024. Kiff doin’ work. I would love to pick the SEC team because the conference is always the premier conference in the country, but there is just too much attrition in College Station.

Bowl season commences on the Blog; A look at tomorrow's 4 key contests

Bowl season has been geared up for a week, but Saturday’s contests are the start of significant bowl games. There are 4 games on tap tomorrow that are relevant. Here is a look at those four games along with predictions as the Blog cranks up for the 2023-24 bowl season that will be capped off by the New Year’s Six games and the Playoff games with the No.4 Crimson Tide squaring off with the No.1 Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl followed by the No.2 Washington Huskies and the No.3 Texas Longhorns at the Sugar Bowl. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena will kickoff at 4 PM CT, and the Sugar Bowl kicks off at 7:45 PM. Both games are on Monday, January 1st, 2024. ESPN will televise both. The winners will play for the National Championship on Monday, January 8th, 2024 at NRG Stadium in Houston at 6:30 PM CT on ESPN. Some classic games prior to the penultimate contests in college football and the national championship game. More on those games and the New Year’s Six matchups coming up on the Blog next week. Troy by 7

Troy put together another prolific season as they won the Sun Belt Conference once again under stellar coach Jon Sumrall, who took the job at Tulane last week. Gerad Parker, the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame this past season, will take over in 2024. First year defensive coordinator Greg Gasparato will be Troy’s interim head coach. The Trojans are led by terrific running back Kimani Vidal, who rushed for 1,582 yards and 14 TDs. Quarterback Gunnar Watson threw for 3,339 yards, 27 TDs against only 5 ints. Duke lost quarterback Riley Leonard to the transfer portal where he ended up at Notre Dame. Coach Mike Elko left for Texas A&M where he tries to rebuild what has been a disaster area in college football. Trooper Taylor of Auburn and SEC fame will be the interim coach for Duke. Manny Diaz will be the new head coach at Duke in 2024. Diaz, who was head coach at Miami before being fired, just finished up his tenure as defensive coordinator at Penn State, where he did well. Duke had several more transfers besides Leonard. It’s just too much to ask and the Trojans just keep truckin’ along every year. New coach, same success. Larry Blakeney, Neil Brown, who’s now at West Virginia and finally turning it around as the Mountaineers finished 2023 at 8-4 and face North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Wednesday, and Sumrall. It’s quite a program. Wow, they can hire good coaches.

It’s hard to pick against Kyle Whittingham and Utah in their bowl game as they are 11-5 under Whittingham in the postseason. But they limped home during the regular season, lost a lot in the transfer portal, and Northwestern is one of the best stories in college football. They fired coach Pat Fitzgerald before the season for a hazing scandal. They rallied under interim coach David Braun, who is now the permanent head coach for the Wildcats, winning 4 of their last 5 games. Give me the Wildcats to pull off the upset.

The Crimson Tide will "Head East" to face 'Dem Dawgs along with other classics in Championship weeknend

The number eight Alabama Crimson Tide alights in the ATL on Saturday to square off with the No.1 Georgia Bulldogs in what will assuredly be a riveting SEC Championship Game. The Tide will need to win and get help if they want to advance to the Playoff. And that’s a tall order against the two-time defending national champions.

S is 4-1 against Kirby in head to head matchups with victories in the 2017 season National Championship Game, the historic Tua to Devonta 2nd and 29 TD pass for the National Championship winning score (26-23), two SEC championship games, 2018 and 2021, and a 2021 victory at Bryant-Denny. S has had Kirby’s number for the most part, though the great Smart won the latest matchup in the 2021 season national championship game, 33-18. But if Jameson Williams hadn’t gotten injured in that game, there could have been a different outcome. Williams was un-guardable until he was injured in the second quarter.

This is the Crimson Tide’s opportunity to make the playoff with a victory over the two-time defending national champion, which has also won an SEC record 29 games in a row. It’s Jalen Milroe versus Carson Beck, the Alabama offensive line, which has been dominating during these last several games, versus the Dawgs’ defense. The Georgia defense may not be as prolific as the last two have been, particularly the one two years ago, but it’s plenty talented. Then you have the Alabama skilled players, running backs Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams, and maybe the emerging Jam Miller, along with the great Jermaine Burton, and the hero of last Saturday’s improbable and majestic victory over the Auburn Tigers, Isaiah Bond, or “IB” as the team calls him. Milroe had all day to throw the ball, and threw a beauty that IB leapt up and pulled in while getting both feet in bounds for the electric game winner. Wow, what a game. The Tigers defensive decision on that play has been questioned as they only rushed two defenders with nine back in coverage. You would think Coach Freeze and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts might have put another guy up front to rush Milroe, but they opted for the ultimate prevent. The way the Alabama O line was protecting Milroe, it may not have mattered anyway if the Tigers rushed three or four. What a spectacle that game was. There is magic for the home team like no other when the Tigers host the Crimson Tide at Jordan-Hare, but the last two times the Tide has escaped with the victory in improbable and majestic fashion. In 2021, the Tide escaped with a 24-22 victory in 4 overtimes. Bryce Young led the Tide on a 99-yard TD drive with the game tying touchdown (along with the extra point) on a 28 yard TD pass to Ja’Corey Brooks with 24 seconds left. The Tide went on to outlast the Tigers in quadruple OT.

Can the Tide keep the magic going against Beck, the incomparable Brock Bowers, who has been slowed by an ankle injury suffered back in October at Vanderblit, but will play and be an ultimate weapon, as always, that stable of receivers, and the extremely talented running back duo of Kendall Milton and Dijon Edwards, along with a stellar O Line. This game promises to deliver.

The SEC Championship Game and the other championship contests, with everything on the line for the four playoff spots, will commence this Friday and Saturday. The Selection Show is Sunday at 11 AM CT on ESPN.

Here’s a look at this weekend’s riveting slate along with predictions.

The Crimson Tide is going to have to take care of business in Mercedes-Benz, which is a monumental task against Kirby Smart and his phenomenal team, and hope for some help. Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? The Crimson Tide is always a superb underdog. Versus Miami back in the 1992 national championship game as a double digit underdog. And I’ll go way back to Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide in 1971 when they went out to L.A. and knocked off the No.1 ranked USC Trojans as the great Bear unveiled the Wishbone attack which became a forever part of Crimson Tide lore and won Alabama a lot of football games and several national championships under Coach Bryant. Alabama did it two years ago in the 2021 SEC Championship Game as a seven point underdog to Georgia. This is the kind of stuff Alabama does, and Saban is terrific at getting his team ready for the big moments, the big contests. It’ll be an extremely hard fought game, and the Dawgs may stay in the top four regardless. The Crimson Tide will need a good bit of help even if the knock off Georgia. I like them to do that on Saturday.

Ducks by 9 1/2

Dan Lanning and Kalen DeBoer were hired in 2021, the same year the two blockbuster hires of Lincoln Riley at USC and Brian Kelly at LSU transpired. Pat Forde of SI.com wrote a column today on the wildly successful tenures of Lanning and DeBoer so far versus the OK performances of Riley and Kelly. These two coaches are superstars in the profession and their teams are prolific. Oregon is a heavy favorite, but I like DeBoer, Michael Pennix Jr and the Huskies to keep it close with Bo Nix and the Ducks. I’ll take the Ducks, but it’ll be a classic. Nix will clinch the Heisman in this game. His numbers are off the charts great with a 78.6% completion rate, 315-of-401, for 3,906 yards, 37 TDs against 2 ints. One of his main competitors is Pennix Jr., but Bo barely outlasts him in this game and in the Heisman Trophy award. There is a lot of chatter about LSU’s Jayden Daniels, who completed 72% of his passes, 236-of-327, for 3,812 yards, 40 TDs against only 4 ints. He also rushed for 10 more. Those are astoundingly good numbers, but his team was 9-3, so I gotta go with Nix there as well. Pennix Jr. completed 65% of his passes for 3,899 yards, 32 TDs against 8 ints, but he fell off some after the Oregon victory at Seattle. But that takes nothing away from the season he and his team have produced. They’ll be a New Year’s Six team in most likely the Fiesta Bowl. The Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl are the sites for the Playoff games on Monday January 1st, with the Rose Bowl at 4 PM CT and the Sugar Bowl at 7:45 PM. May need to take half a day off on Tuesday. Or take a whole day off, why the heck not.

Horns by 15 1/2

The Horns are going to make a statement here and make a strong case for inclusion in the Playoff. They’ll need help like the Crimson Tide will. Sark has done a masterful job in Austin and could very well be coach of the year. Coach Saban has done a terrific job, too, as has Lanning and DeBoer. Stiff competition there. I’d say the winner of the PAC-12 Championship will get it, and I’m predicting that’ll be Oregon and Lanning. But that takes nothing away from the job Sark has done. Texas is back and they could be competing for something more important than coach of the year in Sark’s eyes if things go their way.

What a job Sherrone Moore did in Jim Harbaugh’s place going 3-0 during Harbaugh’s absence and defeating the Buckeyes and an experienced coach in Ryan Day. Day is now 1-3 against Michigan, so the natives are getting restless in Columbus. Now Harbaugh is back and the Wolverines are hungry to show the country that they’re the best team in 2023. I’m not saying they are yet. The teams I’ve written about above can definitely knock them off. But Iowa is out-punting their coverage in this one.

What a job Willie Fritz does at Tulane. He has been talked about for other jobs, but he seems like a loyal guy who loves it in New Orleans and loves his team, which is refreshing. He’s 63, making good money with more to come I’m sure, and is taking his team to New Year’s Six Bowls. That’s about as good as it gets. Tulane finishes the regular season and the championship game at 12-1 and awaits for their name to be called on Sunday.

He’s a hot commodity in the coaching profession, but maybe he’ll want to stay at Troy a couple of more years. You can win big at Troy. The program has a great tradition. Jamey Chadwell, wow, what a job he’s done this season as Liberty. He is 12-0 to go along with the major success he had at Coastal Carolina. Another coach on the rise at 46 years old. Coach Freeze left him a very good team as well. But New Mexico State went to Auburn and won 31-10. Cagey veteran coach Jerry Kill and his team, which is 9-3, will keep it close, but the Flames will escape with the victory and move on to a solid bowl. But it won’t be easy.

My Playoff teams Sunday will be:

  1. Michigan (13-0)

  2. Florida State (13-0)

  3. Oregon (12-1)

  4. Texas (12-1)

I just don't see how the Crimson Tide can jump these teams even with a victory over Georgia. That would be the best victory of 2023 along with Texas’ 34-24 victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa back in early September. But these teams are all ahead of the Crimson Tide, so I don’t see it as possible.

Maybe the committee will decide on the four best teams. If it’s the four best teams, I would go with: 1.Michigan 2. Alabama, 3.Georgia and 4. Oregon. If that were the case, the Texas and Florida State fan base would be outraged. So, the former scenario is more likely.

Regardless, it will be a stellar Saturday in Mercedes-Benz Stadium and an equally electric Friday and Saturday throughout the country during Championship weekend.

The Tide is “heading east,” and with that said, here’s the signature song from the band that made that moniker famous. A 1975 hit by this great cast of characters.

A very important game for the No.8 Crimson Tide, which tries to play its way into the Playoff, while the Auburn Tigers want bragging rights and an Iron Bowl victory at home in the most intense rivalry in college football. Win out, which means winning at Jordan-Hare, and then figuring out some way to knock off the two time defending national champions and the No.1 team in the country, and I see the Crimson Tide making the playoff. If you make it through the SEC gauntlet unscathed and knock off the Dawgs, are you kiddin’ me? How would the committee ever leave a team out with the Crimson Tide’s history and the way they’ve been playing lately. Florida State dropped a spot in the CFP rankings, but if they win out, even with quarterback Jordan Travis gone for the season with a knee injury, they still have a great case for making the playoff. With either Ohio State or Michigan canceling themselves out, and the Alabama-Georgia loser possibly canceling themselves out, in Georgia’s case, and Washington playing Oregon in the PAC-12 Championship Game, along with the Big 12 Championship Game, if it’s Texas, some chaos could ensue. And FSU victories over the Gators on the road, and in the ACC Championship Game versus No. 10 Louisville on Saturday, December 2nd at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at 7 PM CT on ABC, would be very persuasive. The ‘Noles are playing with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker, who came into the Louisville game in 2022 with the ‘Noles down by a TD and led them to victory. He also threw for 2 TDs and 0 ints last Saturday night versus North Alabama after Travis was injured. So it’s still positive in Tallahassee. But I expect the Gators to give them a tough game even without their starting quarterback Graham Mertz, who got knocked out for the rest of the season with a fractured collarbone last Saturday night at Missouri.

Like Utah to finish their regular season strong at 8-4, get ready to win another bowl game under Kyle Whittingham, then welcome back injured quarterback Cam Rising next season for his seventh season at quarterback. Rising’s been out all year with a terrible knee injury he suffered in the Rose Bowl last year against Penn State in which he suffered three torn ligaments. He’s been at Texas for one year and at Utah in the following years. That will be huge and season changing to get Rising back in 2024.

College Football advances to Week 12 with some chaos possible

We’re now down to cases as the great Ernie Johnson, Sr., the Braves former player and prolific broadcaster, used to say. It’s week 12, and there is very little margin for error with teams that have their sights set on the College Football Playoff. It’s such an interesting race for Sunday, December 3rd when the final field will be announced on ESPN starting at 11 AM CT. There are eight legitimate teams that can make the playoff: No.1 Georgia, No.2 Ohio State, No.3 Michigan, No.4 Florida State, No.5 Washington, No.6 Oregon, No.7 Texas, and No.8 Alabama. No.9 Missouri has two losses, so that won’t cut it with how well the teams ahead of them are playing and the Tigers’ losses to Georgia and LSU. No. 10 Louisville is not completely out of the picture, but it’s a real long shot.

And there are challenges this Saturday for a few of those teams that could determine the trajectory towards the Playoff.

It’s mid November, a spectacular time in college football, so let’s dive right into Week 12.

The Tide is making a late run at the playoff, and if they win out, I like their chances. That means defeating the Auburn Tigers @ Jordan-Hare and taking down dem Dawgs in the SEC Championship Game. That’s hard. The Bama-AU game will be at 2:30 PM Saturday, Nov.25th at 2:30 PM on CBS. The Georgia game will be Saturday, Dec, 2nd at 3 PM on CBS. If the Crimson Tide can clear those major hurdles they would earn themselves a spot in the Playoff. S would get upset with me for overlooking Chattanooga, but I’m overlooking Chattanooga.

The Missouri Tigers have been nothing short of terrific this season. Eli Drinkwitz and his team have hit their stride this year. They destroyed Tennessee last Saturday at Faurot Field, 36-7, with running back Cody Schrader rushing for 207 yards on 35 carries and a 7. The great Brady Cook was 18-for-24 for 275 yards and another 7. The also great Luther Burden III caught a 7. That trifecta has been sensational this season, and as Drinkwitz said after the game last Saturday, “Our defense kicked their ___.” There is some bad blood between the two schools as UT Coach Josh Huepel has done some obnoxious things to incite the series. Well, Huepel and the Vols are looking incompetent and the Tigers are surging. The Tigers also put a scare into Georgia the week before in Sanford Stadium before succumbing to the Dawgs, 30-21.

Billy Napier and Florida just haven’t figured it out yet. He’s got the fifth ranked recruiting class in the country for 2024 according to 247 Sports, but Napier has his work cut out for him if he wants to retain his job after next season. If he has a poor finish against Missouri and at home versus Florida State, his job may very well be in jeopardy this season, although I don’t think it should be since it’s only his second season along with a stellar recruiting class coming in. But some SEC schools and fan bases are irrational with Florida being right at the top of that list.

The guy has to be in New York December 9th at the Heisman Trophy Presentation (7 PM ESPN). Guys like Michael Pennix Jr., Bo Nix, Marvin Harrison Jr. should also be there. Daniels has to be there even if he doesn’t win it. Jalen Milroe and Carson Beck are making a late run. I’m not ready to coronate anybody as the Heisman winner yet. I would think Pennix Jr is the leader right now with Nix right behind him. But I’m waiting till after Championship weekend before declaring a winner. The voters should do the same.

I don’t want to hear about Lane as a candidate for the A&M job. That’s a joke. He’s got to worry about getting better at Ole Miss and see if there is some way, any way, he can be competitive with the Crimson Tide and Georgia. People may say you can’t do that at Ole Miss, but Hugh showed that it could be done before his demise there. Is Lane any good? That’s my question. A&M, though dysfunctional and a total disaster right now, can do better than Kiffin if they’re got any sense. And that is debatable. They hireda joke coach and are now paying him $76 million to get lost? Are you kiddin’ me?

Jimbo Fisher took the program down with him. The question is: who will be the next coach? Dan Lanning has completely dismissed the job and I believe him. He’s happy at Oregon. Oregon has a chance to win it all every year with Phil Knight’s finances, the facilities, and Lanning’s recruiting is superb. He’s also making $7M a year with some more chunked in in the near future. Maybe Mike Norvell. Maybe Mike Elko of Duke. Elko has been a dc at A&M and has done a nice job at Duke. Norvell is doing great at FSU. There will be a lot of names circulating and I can’t give you a clear answer because there are a lot of rumors out there that aren’t confirmed, so it’s next to impossible to predict. If Lanning has said unequivocally no, then those two guys would be my next candidates with Norvell being my first choice. The coaches are a wash. Kalen Debour of Washington and Jonathan Smith are both exceptional coaches. They could be candidates for openings, but they’re both west coast guys; Smith is a former Oregon State player, so they both could be happy where they are. Debour has a great thing going in Seattle. When I look at these tight matchups I look at the head coaches and the quarterbacks. With the coaches even, you’ve got Washington’s quarterback Pennix Jr. versus DJ Uiagalelei. Both are outstanding. The Huskies seem like a team this season that has some magic. A lot of people have them losing this weekend or losing to Oregon in the PAC-12 Championship Game in Vegas (Allegiant Stadium on Friday Dec. 1st, at 7 PM on ABC). But I think people are undervaluing this team. They’re special. Not ready to predict them defeating Oregon, but I like them to advance out of Corvallis in a slugfest. College Football Week 11 could lead to some shakeup in the CFP rankings

Sorry about my two week hiatus. I was working on some final details on my novel and watching my Rangers do work. How ‘bout them Rangers. My younger daughter, Fairbanks, and I were ecstatic. We saw the Rangers in June with her boyfriend, Hayden, at the epic Globe Life Field in Arlington, a game in which the Rangers won 2-1 over the Seattle Mariners in two hours and five minutes. The stadium was superb, Jon Gray pitched a beauty and Marcus Semien and Corey Seager were doin’ serious work at the plate in the clutch, as usual. It was a glimpse of what was to come for the World Series champions. Semien went off at the plate in games 4 and 5 of the Fall Classic, and Seager was a long ball and defensive machine as the 29 year old Charlotte, North Carolina native claimed the Most Valuable Player award for the Series. It was Texas’ first World Series title. The organization has been around since 1961. Sixty two years. That is the longest tenured franchise without a World Series championship in MLB history. Well earned and deserved by the Rangers. Fairbanks sent me a Rangers hat for my birthday last week. It says 2023 World Series champion with a “T” underneath it and the Rangers logo below that. It’s blue, red and white. Wearing it proudly right now.

Now a look ahead at this weekend’s College Football slate. Some classics on the horizon.

The LSU victory was impressive. Two things stood out to me in that game. Of course, the play of Jalen Milroe. Milroe threw for 219, and, more impressively, ran for a buck 55 and 4 TDs. Jalen decided he was not going to let Jayden Daniels show him up. If he can run like that and add even more passing proficiency, this team will be in the thick of things come championship weekend.

The other facet of the game that stood out to me, and it’s been talked about at great length, was the non-targeting call on Dallas Turner. I’ve looked at it several times from the Alabama sideline and the behind Daniels’ angles. It looked like a launch as Turner was on his toes and launching into Daniels. He definitely hit the head area; he hit him in the chin. But the key question was: did he lead with his face mask or the crown of his helmet? It’s so simultaneous that it is very difficult to distinguish. From the angles I saw, it was targeting. But I didn’t get all the angles that referee Daniel Gautreaux and his replay crew in Birmingham got. There is an angle from behind the Alabama defense and there is an angle from the far sideline, the LSU sideline, that I didn’t see. So they could have gotten it right. I can’t be 100% certain of my judgment because I didn’t get all the angles that the refs got. They called it leading with the face mask and with the new rules for targeting, that did not constitute a targeting foul. There are plenty of opinions that called for targeting, but the refs didn’t see it that way, so I have to trust them.

It doesn’t take away from Milroe’s performance, or the defensive performance in the second half. It did help the Crimson Tide that Daniels was out of the game. But a very nice win for Alabama, nonetheless, and their playoff hopes are very much alive. If they win out, they’re in. I think that’s a clear as the Gulf in May.

The Tide is on the road Saturday at 11 AM, and as Walter has said, you just don’t know about those early games; how the team will respond. But I like the Tide to play well with so much on the line and keep “matriculating” towards the postseason. Georgia looks a little vulnerable right now, particularly without Brock Bowers, so it’ll be very interesting if these two teams collide in Atlanta on Saturday, December 2nd at 3 PM CT on CBS in the SEC Championship Game. Will be a stellar matchup if each team keeps advancing as the regular season winds down with some critical games in the upcoming weeks. Bama has a gimme versus Chattanooga next Saturday at 11 AM at Bryant-Denny, but then head to Auburn on Saturday, November 25th for a 2:30 PM kickoff on CBS and there is no guarantee at Jordan-Hare. Georgia has a tough one at home versus Ole Miss on Saturday, then go to Knoxville next Saturday, 11/18 at 2:30 PM on CBS, then finish with scrappy Georgia Tech on the road. So Georgia’s strength of schedule will improve drastically in the next three games. If they get through those and get to the SEC Championship and win that, the Dawgs could get a three-peat. But the Crimson Tide, if they take care of business, will have their say in that discussion as well.

Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell are enforcers off the edge. Jermaine Burton really stepped it up on the perimeter last Saturday for the Tide with 9 receptions for 197 yards and two TDs. If Jace McClellan and Roydell Williams and the running game get it going , this team is formidable. The O line needs to keep homing in on their run blocking. If they do that, this is a dangerous team going forward. It already is for the most part.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning is a stud. He and Bo Nix, who’s been superb, pull off the upset in this gigantic matchup. It’s a tough one because Kalen DeBoar is a stellar coach and quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. is a massive stud himself. The numbers are through the roof good for both quarterbacks. Penix Jr. has completed 133 of 178, 74%, for 1,999 yards, 16 TDs against 2 ints. Nix has completed 131 of 163, 80%, for 1,459 yards, 15 TDs against 1 int. Something has to give. I’ll take the Ducks in a slight upset, but this is a tough one, especially since it’s in Seattle, which will be raucous. Above and beyond that, the Huskies are an outstanding team. Tremendous national implications though these two teams could see each other again in the PAC-12 Championship Game at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas in December as well. Nix vs. Penix Jr. is a Heisman competition as well. What a matchup.

Quarterback Drake Maye, Coach Mack Brown and the Heels keep their stellar undefeated season intact, but in a tight one. Mario Cristobal may never live down his colossal coaching mistake against Georgia Tech last Saturday in which he ran the ball instead of having his quarterback take a knee, which would have run out the clock and secured the Miami victory. The Canes fumbled, Georgia Tech recovered and got a 7 to secure the upset. That was demoralizing to Miami. He did the same thing in 2018 against Stanford at home as Oregon’s coach and lost the game. How do you do that twice? Carolina is a sleeper for the playoff at this point.

College Football Week 6 Headlined by a Classic in College Station; A Historically great movie/music theme song

The Crimson Tide has reasserted itself as a national factor in the last couple of weeks. Their resiliency and fortitude will be tested this Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station as they square off with the Aggies of Texas A&M. Should be an epic. More upcoming below.

The Auburn Tigers proved that they’re building a formidable program for the future under Coach Freeze. The 27-17 loss to Georgia was a hard fought, classic SEC contest at the incredible home field advantage of Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers are 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, are off this week, then head down to Baaton Rouge next Saturday Night for a contest versus the Bengal Tigers.

There are terrific matchups in the conference and with future conference members, next year as a matter of fact, as those two rivals face off in the Cotton Bowl this Saturday in the Red River Showdown. Major national implications on the line in that contest.

Here’s a look at this Saturday’s riveting schedule of games.

Wow, this point spread has come down from 3 1/2 at the beginning of the week. There are so many key matchups and factors in this classic. One of the major matchups is the Bama O line versus the A&M dline. A&M has piled up the sacks this season and are tied for second in the country in that category with 20. The Crimson Tide is 7th with 17. So right tackle JC Latham and company will be severely tested by this Aggies dominating front. The quarterback duel between Jalen Milroe and Max Johnson will be pivotal, as always. Jalen can make the explosive runs and hit the long balls. Explosives will be critical. Johnson is an excellent passer and a pretty decent runner. Jalen will need to connect on some of the mid range throws and let guys like Isaiah Bond and Jermaine Burton take it from there. Tight end Amari Niblack has been a weapon for the Tide as well. S and Tommy Reas should try to incorporated him in the game. Jalen will try to stay away from the ints as will Johnson. And Jalen running the ball will be a tremendously important part of the offense as will RBs Jase McCellan and Roydell Williams. The A&M offense is explosive with wide outs Ainias Smith, Evan Stewart and Noah Thomas major take it to the house threats on the perimeter. Le’Veon Moss is a force running the ball, both for power and home run ability. Dallas Turner, Chris Braswell, Terrion Arnold and the Crimson Tide defense will be tasked with slowing down Jimbo Fisher’s explosive offense. This is a classic. Jimbo defeated S two years ago in College Station, so can he do it again? It’s tough to do that to S. Miss Terry got on him last week about being tougher on his players and he got the message and they responded accordingly. He’s back to his old ways and that’s a good thing. I like a more defensive battle in this one with some explosives, a key interception or a punt return, and, finally, a Will Reichard field goal to win it for the Crimson Tide. Wow, that young kicker is reliable. He’ll deliver once again for the Crimson Tide in a stellar SEC Football game with major conference and national implications at stake.

Unlike many others, I didn’t mind Ryan Day going off on Lou Holtz in his interview after the Notre Dame victory. It was out of control, no doubt, but Holtz was questioning Day’s team’s toughness, and as a coach, I would find that unacceptable. Holtz basically guaranteed that the Irish would out-tough the Buckeyes. Don’t blame Day at all. He can be a jerk at times, but I like him taking up for his team. Holtz is doubling down on his comments and won’t let it go. If I was Day, I’d tell him to put that loss in his pipe and smoke it. The great theme song/video from one of the best movies of all time

We have all had our “Rocky” moments at one time or another. Brombey running for 297 yards in a high school football game. WT, Bama Golf, Walter, Brombey, Brownie, or T’eo shooting a low 70’s, high 60’s round. Derrick winning a big tennis match or dominating in pickelball. My brother in law, Jack Reed, catching a TD pass in high school or beating the pro at Mountain Brook Club in tennis. My cousin, Camper O’Neal, catching a TD pass in a Mountain Brook High School playoff game or playing stellar golf like he does many times. My friend Bert Pitts tearing up the pavement at 4;30 AM these days. My great friend Kirby Sevier excelling at basketball and baseball in college. My sister, Penny Page, dominating at Pickeleball or setting the Mountain Brook Country Club record for minutes in a plank at 6. My wife, Beth, tearing up a marathon and running like a gazelle 3 days a week and riding her Peloton Bike the other four. Due to an injury, she’s walking right now and riding her Peloton Bike, but asking her if she is going to run again is like asking a general, rhetorically, if Fort Knox has gold. That would be a guaranteed yes. My daughter, Isabelle, running in a half marathon 2 weeks ago after getting over COVID the week before. My daughter Fairbanks excelling at tennis and pickle ball.

I’ve been working out at a boxing gym since 2019 called Battle Republic. It has locations in Homewood, the Summit and they’re opening one up in Tuscaloosa. I get that same athletic high and feeling of accomplishment that the aforementioned special people got from their great athletic feats. It’s a 45 minute HIIT cardio boxing workout with 10, 3 minute rounds of hitting the bag and doing burpees, push-ups, plank jacks, high knees and jumping jacks. It’s hard, intense, but extremely exhilarating. The punches are the jab, the cross, front hook, back hook, front uppercut and back uppercut, labeled respectively, 1 (jab), 2 (cross), 3, (front hook) 4, (back hook), 5 (front upper) and 6 (back upper). The coach will call out 1-2-6-duck, 5, 4, and you hit the bag accordingly. It gets exhausting, but it’s a thrill to get through a workout.

I had a Rocky moment in high school sports when I was running track my senior year. I was a football, basketball and baseball player up until my senior year when I went out for the track team in the winter after football to get ready for baseball. We had a really outstanding basketball team and I was a better pickup player than an organized team player. So I ran track. I was trying everything from the 60, to the long jump, to the 220, to the 500. Nothing was really working out. My coach looked at me and gave me a Belichick quote, “This is not what we’re looking for.” After that frustrating discussion with my coach, our team has a dual meet with a school from Virginia, T.C. Williams, better known for its football team portrayed in the movie “Remember the Titans.” There were a lot of great athletes at that school. I was of course at high school in Virginia myself. We were all even with Williams in the meet when the 2 mile relay came up. We were getting our tail kicked, and the third leg was about to commence. Each runner ran a half mile, four laps around our 220 yard indoor track. I went up to my coach and said, “Coach let me take that baton.” He said, “What do you think you can run.” I said a 2:15. “All right, get in there,” he said. We were a half lap behind when I got the baton. I started sprinting. I was on my third lap and catching the guy. I could see my teammates out of the corner of my eye saying, “Come on David White!” It was a spectacular feeling. I caught the guy and handed off to our fourth leg, a stud athlete who had already won 6 events that day. Any other time he would have waxed the dude, but he just ran out of gas and was beaten. I had run a 2:10 and was pumped. From then on, I was the first leg of the race, and we would be so far out in front after my half, that we’d cruise to victory. There was a lot of adversity leading up to that Rocky moment, but once it came to fruition, it was a spectacular feeling.

All the people I’ve mentioned above have experienced those moments in their athletic careers. That leads in to this amazing video of this phenomenal movie. I’m going to “Take You Back,” to 1972. “Take You Back” was the first song in this classic movie. Derrick, Roy Morton, Deano Matthews, Mabry Smith and I performed it at Cash’s Bar in Destin in their Gong Show Night back in the day. We practiced kind of hard on it. “Take it Back, Doo, Doo, Doo. Take it Back.” We got gonged in about 20 seconds. I thought it was robbery. I thought we were a pretty good act. Nobody else believed in us. Oh well, we didn’t become the Beatles. Life at a bar can be tough at times.

But here’s this stellar vid to amp you up for this Saturday’s classics, especially the Crimson Tide @ the Aggies. Enjoy the game!

Final Analysis and prediction

The American team blasted Europe two years ago at Whistling Straits, 19-9, but the U.S. has not won on European soil in 30 years. You have to go all the way back to 1993 when the U.S, last emerged victorious across the pond. The U.S. team is stacked with talent and favored to win and Europe has a couple of very inexperienced players. But I love the toughness of the European team at home. Give me the upset behind Rory, Rahm and Viktor.

College Football Week 4 features massive showdowns

Wow, this Saturday in college football is filled with marquee matchup after marquee matchup on the slate.

The No.13 Crimson Tide, in an unusual spot in the AP Poll, faces No.15 Ole Miss at Bryant-Denny Saturday afternoon, and the Auburn Tigers precede that at 11 AM at College Station as they face the A&M Aggies. Something has to give for all four of these teams. All need the victory to keep their respective seasons intact. The Crimson Tide really needs to defend its home turf, and Coach Freeze is searching for his first signature victory at Auburn. Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin are chomping at the bit to finally get over the Nick Saban/Alabama monumental hurdle, while Jimbo Fisher needs this one badly to keep his Aggie ship from collapsing for another season and his job to be really on the line if he succumbs to Auburn.

Some other SEC tilts look interesting and the national slate is superb. Here’s a look at this Saturday’s riveting matchups in CFB along with predictions.

I’m not sold that this 2023 Crimson Tide team can be successful and live up to the Standard. Not seeing it. The quarterback situation is a mess, the offensive line has way underachieved, and the defense, though better last Saturday, is not prolific. The quarterback room, which has been so stellar for so many years with Greg McElroy, A.J. McCarron, Blake Sims, Jake Coker, then the prolific group of Jalen Hurts, most of the time, Tua, Mac Jones and the amazing Bryce Young, is just not where it needs to be. Coach Saban is going with Jalen Milroe. While Milroe has had his moments this year running and throwing the deep ball, he gives you that explosive element, he’s erratic on the intermediate throws you have to have and getting through his progressions and delivering the ball out of the pocket quickly to avoid a sack. He just hasn’t mastered those skills yet. He’s still got a chance to be succeed, but, so far, the results have not been what the Tide was looking for. T’eo and I were also talking on Tuesday about what has happened to the great defensive linemen Coach Saban had recruited so well? Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, Dalvin Tomlinson, A’Shawn Robinson (wow, what a player), Quinine Williams (another superb player) Jarren Reed among others. What’s happened to guys like that? I don’t know if Coach Saban knows how he can get through to these players anymore. He’s seemed to say that recently saying he can’t really use his usual tough love approach with these players because they’re so sensitive. He has to be encouraging with them, too much so, and that’s not who he is. He’s always been supportive of his players, but has been tough when he needs to be, and it’s worked to the tune of six national championships. But it seems like he’s had to back off the last two years. Maybe he needs to get back to that. His coordinators this season have had issues as well, particularly on offense, but defense, too. The offensive line gave up five more sacks last Saturday to South Florida? South Florida played hard, but when you have high four stars and five stars on your o line and they have low three stars to two stars upfront on their d line, how does that happen? It’s just not happening right now for the Crimson Tide. Can they turn it around? They have an opportunity to this Saturday at home where they have dominated Ole Miss. They have dominated the series in general.

But Kiff has a really good team this year with an exceptionally mobile quarterback in Jaxson Dart. I like the Rebels to pull off the upset and it won’t be that shocking.

Don’t trust these two teams right now. Have little to no trust in Fish, and Hugh does not have the program where he wants it to be at present. I like this lower scoring because Auburn’s defense is pretty good and so is A&M’s. But I trust A&M quarterback Conner Weigman more than I do Payton Thorne. Thorne proved to be a capable runner last Saturday going for over a hunge, but he’s always had problems with interceptions. I see that costing Hugh and the Tigers Saturday. Give me the Aggies at Kyle Field.

But there’s really no shame in that since the Buffs had a healthy Travis Hunter and they’re a for real team. The Frogs have a shot to make some noise in the Big 12. They have a stellar offense under head coach Sonny Dykes and first year OC Kendal Briles, and if they can tighten it up defensively, they’ll make some noise in the Big 12. College Football Week 3 Previews/Predictions

Week 2 was a surprise with the Crimson Tide going down to a locked in, lockdown Texas Longhorns team, 34-24. The Longhorns controlled the game and showed the Crimson Tide it has a lot to work on. So my first question is, who will be the quarterback if Jalen Milroe struggles once again in the first quarter this Saturday in Tampa? Tyler Buchner, the Notre Dame transfer, looks to be the next man up. Ty Simpson could get a shot. This is a fluid situation for the Crimson Tide. They are @ South Florida, so this is a game they can try to figure out their best option going forward. Possibly. No.17 Ole Miss comes to Tuscaloosa next Saturday, 9/23, for a 2:30 PM kick on CBS, so I’m sure it would be nice for Coach Saban and his team to know who will be under center giving the Crimson Tide the best chance to win against the Rebels. The offensive line struggled last Saturday against a strong, quick Texas pass rush. The defense had several issues as well in pass rush and coverage. Texas did play an awesome game, so they deserve a lot of credit. They may be back. There’s a lot of football left, but the Horns look poised to make a strong run in the Big 12 and nationally. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide will look for some answers this Saturday.

The Auburn Tigers barely scraped by the Cal Bears last Saturday Night in Berkeley. Auburn is a work in progress as well. There are injuries at linebacker and in the secondary as Samford comes to the Plains for a 6 PM kick this Saturday on SEC Network+ and ESPN+. Payton Thorne has been decent. Robbie Ashford showed off his prolific athletic skills in week one against UMass, but wasn’t nearly as effective last Saturday Night in Berkeley. The Tigers will try to figure themselves out Saturday. The Tigers will be @ Texas A&M next Saturday, 9/23, for an 11 AM kick on ESPN, so I know Coach Freeze wants to get this team playing sound football heading into a blockbuster matchup in College Station.

Here’s a look at this Saturday’s slate. The No.1 Dawgs host the Gamecocks in what looks like it could be another blowout, though Georgia has not been overly impressive this season, so far. LSU is @ Mississippi State. Maybe State coach Zach Arnott can control himself and not throw out one of his expletives like he did last Saturday his interview with Cole Cubelic after the Zona overtime victory. That was incredible after the 31-24 overtime win. I thought I was listening to Chris Rock give a postgame interview. Ole Miss, Arkansas and Missouri are in some interesting non-conference tilts. It’s about to get very interesting in the SEC next week, but this week has promise. Here’s this week’s previews along with predictions.

College Football Week 1 was terrific; Week 2 promises to be as well

I’ve got five observations from Week 1 in CFB, then we’ll focus on this Saturday’s games with the Crimson Tide in a major clash in T-town, and the Auburn Tigers on the left coast for a late one Saturday Night against a pretty quality team from the PAC-12. Some other solid matchups for SEC teams and some excellent national tilts. Will dive into those shortly.

First, five opinions on week 1. Good to have college football back. Here they are.

  1. Coach Prime! Wow. CP was saying after the game that he was keeping receipts on those sportswriters who were doubting him and I’m in line. I am a believer now. Prime has assembled a group of 70 transfers, including several terrific players on this football team, and has combined that with some stellar coaching. Prime just knows how to recruit, motivate and is the perfect father figure to his players. I heard him give a speech to his players at Jackson State last year in their locker-room . It was spectacular. The players want to run through Fort Knox for him. He’s a superior leader and motivator. His offensive coordinator, Sean Lewis, was dialing up superior play call after superior play call against a TCU defense that had no clue how to stop’em. On defense, DC Charles Kelly, a crafty veteran who’s coached with S and Jimbo, couldn’t stop the Horned Frogs for the most part, but he stopped them at the end of the game when it mattered most and added a couple of key ints. You’re not going to stop TCU completely with Sonny Dykes and now OC Kendal Briles calling the shots. Dykes is outstanding on offense and Briles is a stud play-caller. But the Buffs found a way when they needed to get a stop at the end in their 45-42 victory. And how about those players? Travis Hunter, who was the No.1 player in the 2022 recruiting class as ranked by 247 sports, was phenomenal. Coach Prime got him to come to Jackson State in 2022 and then transfer to Boulder for this season. Hunter, the sophomore corner/wide receiver, played 144 snaps, 80 on defense and 64 on offense. That’s unheard of. He caught 11 passes for 119 yards and added 1 key int when TCU was on the Buffaloes 5 yard line in the first half. It was a diving pick and a beaut. Hunter is a phenom. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, a junior and the younger Prime Time son, completed 38 of 47 passes for 510 with 4 TDs and 0 ints. He was unstoppable and the TCU d line couldn’t get to him. The Colorado O line was doing an excellent job and Sanders is so quick, he’s almost un-sackable. Older brother Shilo Sanders, a graduate player and a safety, led the defense in tackles with 10. Freshman wide receiver Dylan Edwards caught 5 passes for 135 yards and 3 TDs. What a freshman. This team is for real and Coach Prime is definitely the real deal. I like their future this season and the sky’s the limit for Colorado and CP. Love what I saw in Fort Worth. It was 100 degrees outside and probably 110 on the field at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Fox’s Jenny Taft asked Hunter after the game if he was tired, and he said, “No m’am. Ready to play another game.” This is a really dynamic phenomenon in Boulder. Excited to see what the Buffs do this week in Boulder against Nebraska and first year coach Matt Rhule. Rhule will turn around the Cornhuskers. He’s an amazing college coach. The Carolina Panthers didn’t work out for him, but that can happen to many good college coaches who try to make the leap to the NFL. They’re so used to the discipline of the college game that it can be tough dealing with NFL players who make big salaries and have the massive egos. There are certain coaches cut out for the college game and certain coaches cut out for the NFL. Andy Reid and John Harbaugh are classic NFL coaches who let their superstars play, but keep an even keel when there are problems. Guys like Rhule, Coach Saban and others don’t understand that lack of discipline. So, both duos of head coaches in the NFL, and in the college game are right where they need to be. Coach Prime is right where he needs to be right now and loving every second of it as are the Colorado faithful and many people throughout the country.

  2. Florida State 45, LSU 24. Coach Mike Norvell, in his fourth year in Tallahassee, has assembled a juggernaut. Quarterback Jordan Travis is an absolute stud. He completed 23 of 31 for 342 yards, 4 TDs and one int. He also ran for another. And the Florida State defense was tough and physical. They just manhandled Brian Kelly and his LSU Tigers. Kelly is a fine coach, not a prolific coach. He can give you 10 to 11 win seasons, but when he plays the blue chips like Bama and Clemson, back when Clemson was worth a flip, he gets dominated. That’s what happened Sunday Night in Orlando. Just a spectacular performance by the ‘Noles. This season looks highly promising for Norvell and his team.

  3. Duke 28, Clemson 7. Loved what I saw out of Mike Elko’s team. Elko was a terrific DC at A&M and Notre Dame previously, and he’s taken Duke to another level. They won 9 games last season and won their bowl game. This year looks even better. Riley Leonard, their 6’4”, 212 junior quarterback from Fairhope High School in this state, is another stellar player. The Duke defense was lockdown. It was so impressive. Coach Swinney really needs to get back to the drawing board. His sophomore quarterback, Cade Klubnik, was a five star in the 2022 class. He’s so far from playing like that. Swinney, and new OC Garrett Riley, who came over from TCU, need to figure it out quickly or it’s going to be a long season at Clemson. Interestingly, their 2020, 5 star QB who was much maligned in his three years at Clemson, DJ Uiagalelei, led his Oregon State team to a 42-17 victory in their opener @ San Jose State. DJ completed 20 of 25 passes for 239 and 3 TDs. He also rushed for 2 TDs. So, no problem for him at Corvallis. Jonathan Smith is a tremendous coach and his team is ranked No.16. Too bad they had to break up the PAC-12. It’s an awesome conference and deserves better. Oregon State and Wash State are the only two teams left. Hoping those two teams can find a good home conference and maybe even the PAC-12 can add teams like Boise State, San Diego State, Wyoming etc.. and keep the PAC-12 viable. Hope that’ll happen. They can find teams to make it a competitive conference and still a fixture in college football, which it should be. It’s been an institution in the game for so many years. The PAC-12 was 13-0 in its games last weekend. That’s a pretty strong statement in its final season.

  4. Tennessee 49, Virginia 13. The Vols don’t like like they’ve missed a beat with Joe Milton III taking over at quarterback for now NFL QB Hendon Hooker (Lions). Milton III was awesome. He was 21 of 30 for 201 yards and 2 TDs. Running back Jaylen Wright is electric. He ran for 115 yards. Milton III ran for 2 TDs. Jabari Small is another stellar RB. He ran for 67 yards on 13 carries. And the defense was suffocating. So a complete football team that has a shot to dethrone Georgia in the East. Georgia comes to Knoxvegas on Saturday, Nov. 18th for a likely 2:30 PM kick on CBS. Better strap it on Dawgs and not keep tearing up the roadways. Wow, that’s a story in itself. A player and a staff member killed the night of the National Championship celebration in Athens and 12 other speeding violations. And we’re not talking 40 in a 25. We’re talking 100 in a 70, 80 in a 35. It’s out of control. Kirby Smart needs to figure how to handle that quickly or the three peat is a pipe dream.

  5. North Carolina 31, South Carolina 17. The ACC had their way with a couple of SEC teams last weekend. Carolina sacked Gamecocks QB Spencer Rattler 9 times. Coach Gene Chiz and his defense are doin’ work. They have a complete football team. Shane Beamer and his team need to figure some things out quickly.

    On to week 2.

Last week, Straight up, 22-4; overall 25-6, 81%

ATS, 13-13; overall, 14-17, 45%. Need mullis ATS for week 1 games.

The Crimson Tide defense will have to deal with a pretty dynamic offense led by quarterback Quinn “J.R.”Ewers. Jalen Milroe had a really fine week one game against Middle Tennessee State. Is Milroe the answer at quarterback? Saturday Night will tell us a lot. He sure is explosive if he can dial in his accuracy and decision making. I thought it was an outstanding week 1 performance by Milroe. Such a class kid too. Texas is good this year, and Bama has some injuries in the secondary as Malachi Moore and Jaylen Key are battling injuries. They have practiced this week. I do like Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell to do some damage rushing Ewers, and I like Kool-Aid to make a big punt return and make his impact at corner. I also like Jalen to have a solid game and lead his team to victory as he tries to establish himself as the number one guy under center in T-town.

The Tigers lost starting linebacker Austin Keys for “awhile” according to Hugh as he will have surgery on his thumb. I don’t “like” what Robby Ashford is doing. As Darius Rucker says, “I Love it.” Payton Thorne is a good passer, but for explosives Ashford is Auburn’s guy. The running backs behind Jarquez Hunter, who is out for an undisclosed amount of time for disciplinary measures, did a solid job last Saturday in Auburn’s 59-14 victory over UMass. Like what I’m seeing out of Hugh’s first team. He’s a superb coach, there is no doubt about that. Cal is pretty solid this season after a 58-21 victory on the road @ North Texas. I like the Tigers, but I like it close.

Lincoln Riley and his Trojans have a shot to go deep this season. It all depends on their defense. Caleb Williams and the offense will excel. Like them to keep getting better on defense under Alex Grinch. I still like him a lot as a DC. But the PAC-12 is tough with Washington, Utah, Oregon State, Prime, UCLA. So they’ve got to run through a gauntlet to get to major postseason play.
