After watching Navy dismantle Pitt yesterday, I like the triple option of the Academy to play well in Fort Worth. Running back Jacobi Owens, who rushed for 1,038 yards and 6 TDs this season, and quarterback Karson Roberts, who rushed for 674 yards and nine TDs, should have big days and have a big part in the Falcons getting the job done in a close and exciting contest.

Air Force 35, Cal 31

Russell Athletic Bowl

Line: UNC by 3 1/2

If all things were equal in this game, I would definitely go with Baylor. But Baylor's two starting quarterbacks are injured and out, their best running back, Shock Linwood, 1,329 yards and 10 TDs, is out with an injury, and their leading wide receiver, Corey Coleman, who caught 74 passes for 1,363 yards and 20 TDs,  is also out with an injury. It's going to be tough for Baylor, though Art Briles will do everything he can to keep this a really competitive game and give his team the chance to win. He's an excellent coach. UNC has a lot of talent on offense though, and I just don't believe Baylor can keep up with all the injuries they have on offense right now. Expect running back Elijah Hood, who ran for 1,345 yards and 17 TDs, and quarterback Marquise Williams, who threw for 21 TDs and ran for 867 yards and 11 more TDs, to have good games and for UNC to finish a terrific season with a 12-2 mark. Should be an entertaining game because Art Briles will figure out ways to put points on the board for his team, too.

North Carolina 35, Baylor 31

Nevada has two 1,000 yard rushers in James Butler, who rushed for 1,153 yards and 8 TDs , and Don Jackson, who rushed for 1,029 yards and 8 TDs also. But looking at the schedules, I like Colorado State's resume a little better.

Keenan Reynolds is the first name that comes to mind when looking at this game. Reynolds, the Navy senior quarterback, has set the all time career mark for rushing TDs in FBS with 85. The 5'11", 205 pounder from Antioch, Tennessee has rushed for 1,229 yards and 21 TDs averaging 5 yards per carry and 102.4 per game this season. He has been dynamite at the Naval Academy. He should have been invited to New York City for the Heisman Trophy along with winner Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey and DeShaun Watson. I would have put Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield in there, too. But his career has been magnificent, and he'll try to finish it off with a bowl win and cap an 11-2 season for the Midshipmen. Reynolds doesn't pass much, but he's pretty decent when he does. He's 52-of-98, 53%, for 1,077 yards and 7 TDs against 1 int. His favorite target is Jamir Tillman, who has caught 27 passes for 570 yards and five, 7's. Fullback Chris Swain is a load to tackle at 6'1", 245. Swain has rushed for 909 yards and 10 TDs. The Panthers are going to have to somewhat slow down Reynolds and Swain to have a shot at victory. On defense, defensive end Will Anthony leads the team in tackles for loss with 11.5 for -82 yards and sacks with 7.5 for a loss of -58 yards. Safety Daiquan Thomasson and cornerback Brendon Clements are tied for the team lead in interceptions with two. Navy has just nine ints on the season.

For Pitt, they can move the chains and get in the end zone both on the ground and through the air. Running back Qadree Ollison has rushed for 1,048 yards and 10 TDs in place of superstar running back James Conner who injured a knee before the season started and was lost for the year. Conner then was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma on Thanksgiving, but seems to be doing as well as can be expected right now.

The 6'2", 230 pound Ollison has been stellar in his place. The redshirt freshman is a load to tackle and is capable of making house calls when he gets into the secondary. In the passing game, quarterback Nate Peterman has completed 180-of-293 passes, 61%, for 2,150 yards and 19 TDs against only five TDs. His main target is 6'2", 200 pound junior wide receiver Tyler Boyd, who caught 85 passes for 873 yards and 6 TDs. Tight end J.P. Holtz, a 6'4", 250 pound senior,  has caught 24 passes for 350 yards and four 7's.

On defense, the Panthers can bring some lumber under first year coach Pat Narduzzi, the architect of excellent defenses under Mark Dantonio at Michigan State as Dantonio's long time defensive coordinator. Defensive end Ejuan Price, a 6'0", 250 pound senior, has posted 19.5 tackles for loss of -120 yards, which leads the team. Price also leads the team in sacks with 11.5 for -89 yards. Strong safety Jordan Whitehead leads the team in tackles with 99, and that's not always a great sign if your strong safety is your leading tackler. Pitt gives up 126 yards on the ground and 218 through the air on average. Cornerback Avonte Maddox is second on the team in tackles with 71 and leads the team in interceptions with three.

Final Analysis

Looking at the schedule, I like Pitt's victories more than Navy's. Pitt defeated Virginia Tech, 17-13, at Va. Tech, which was a 55-52 winner over Tulsa Saturday in the Independence Bowl. They also defeated Duke at Duke, 31-13, and Duke was a winner Saturday over Indiana in the Pinstripe Bowl, 44-41. Navy's coach Ken Niumatalolo was showing heavy interest in the BYU head coaching job before and after the Army game. The BYU job came open when their coach, Bronco Mendenhall, took the head coaching job at Virginia. That seemed disruptive to the team as they barely got by Army, 21-17, in their final game of the season. They also got dismantled by Houston, 52-31, in the American Athletic Conference Championship game the week before. Pitt looks like the stronger team overall.

Indoors

Line: Minnesota by 4 1/2

Minnesota got into the postseason by having one of the three highest Academic Progress Reports along with Nebraska and San Jose State, which were both winners in their respective bowl games; San Jose State defeated Georgia State, 27-16, in the Cure Bowl two Saturdays ago, and Nebraska defeated UCLA in the Fosters Farms Bowl this past Saturday night, 37-29. So the 5-7 teams have done well.

Minnesota runs the ball pretty  well on offense with running back Shannon Brooks leading them in rushing with 644 yards and seven TDs, which is pretty good on TDs, but not overwhelming on yards though he does average 6.2 yards per carry. Rodney Smith is next with 596 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Mitch Leidner has completed 218-of-377 passes, 58%, for 2,478 yards, 13 TDs against 10 interceptions. His favorite target is wide receiver K.J. Maye, who has caught 65 passes for 706 yards and four TDs. Junior wide out Drew Wilitarsky, a 6'3", 218 pound rangy receiver, has caught 36 passes for 472 yards and three, 7's.

On defense, safety Antonio Johnson leads the team with 99 tackles. Linebacker Cody Poock is next with 95. Linebacker Jack Lynn leads the team in tackles for loss with 9.5 for -24 yards, and cornerbacks Briean Boddy- Calhoun and Jalen Myrick lead the defense with 3 ints. Myrick got hurt in November but is probable today.

Central Michigan is led by quarterback Cooper Bush, who has completed 309-of-460 passes, 67%, for 3,703 yards, 25 TDs against 10 interceptions. His favorite targets are wide receivers Jesse Kroll, who has caught 59 passes for 856 yards and four TDs, and Anthony Rice, who has caught 56 passes for 584 yards and four TDs, as well. The running game is not a big part of their offense as their rushing leader is running back Martez Walker, who has rushed for 373 yards on 106 carries for a 3.5 average and 2 TDs.

Safety Kavon Frazier leads the Chippewas defense in tackles with 103 and has an int on the season. Safety Tony Annese leads the defense in interceptions with two as the Chippewas defense only has six total ints on the season. Defensive end Blake Serpa leads the team in tackles for loss with 9.5 for a loss of 41 yards. Sherpa also leads the team in sacks with three.

Final Analysis

Minnesota may have gone 5-7 on the season, but had Michigan on the ropes losing in the last minute of the game when they went for the TD on the one yard line on fourth and one and didn't convert to lose to the Wolverines at home, 29-26. They played Ohio State tough, losing 28-14 in Columbus. They also barely lost to Iowa on Nov. 14th, 40-35, at Iowa City. So they've been close to knocking off the major powers of the Big Ten. Central Michigan lost to a good Western Michigan team, 41-39, on the road. Western Michigan blasted Middle Tennessee in the Bahamas Bowl, 45-31, and was impressive doing it. They also have a close 28-23 home loss to Toledo. Toledo  blew out Temple in the Boca Raton Bowl, 32-17.

So this should be a close game. Going with Minnesota to make it the third 5-7 team to get the victory. That will make all three 5-7 teams winners in their bowl appearances.

Minnesota 31, Central Michigan 28

10 AM CT/11 AM ET

Talent: Tom Hart, Anthony Becht, Tiffany Greene

Whistles: Mountain West, Kevin Mar

Line: Marshall by 5

Both of these teams play good defense as Marshall is ranked 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 18.4 points per game, while UConn is ranked 17th in the country yielding just 19.8 ppg. They are both strong against the pass, so this could be a grind it out kind of game.

Marshall does have good quarterback play from Chase Litton, the 6'6", 207 pound true freshman, who has passed for 2,387 yards and 22 sevens against seven ints.

Both teams have good motivation for this game, and that's key. I've seen teams this postseason that really want to win a bowl game, and I've seen other teams that are just there for the festivities. But UConn is making it's first bowl appearance since the 2010 Fiesta Bowl, so they'll be motivated, and Marshall, with a win today, can notch their third straight season of 10 or more victories. That would be a huge accomplishment for sixth year head coach Doc Holliday. The 58 year old head man is 49-28 at Marshall and 3-0 in bowl games. That's impressive. Connecticut head coach Bob Diaco is in his second year, and after going 2-10 last year, the 42 year old head coach has the Huskies trending in the right direction finishing the regular season at 6-6.

The Thundering Herd's Litton will be challenged in the passing game by ball hawking Huskies cornerback Jamar Summers. Summers is tied for third in the country with seven interceptions.

Marshall has their own defensive studs in linebacker Evan McKelvey and defensive end Gary Thompson. McKelvey leads the team in tackles with 113, including nine for loss, and Thompson leads the team in tackles for loss with 11 and sacks with eight. Both players should have good days against a Connecticut offense that averaged just 10 points a contest over the last three games of the season. The Huskies do have the best signature victory as they defeated American Athletic foe Houston, 20-17, on Nov. 21st. Houston, of course, is playing in one of the New Year's Six Bowls,  the Chick Fil-A  Bowl at the Georgia Dome against Florida State on Dec 31st, New Year's Eve, at 11 AM CT/Noon ET on ESPN.

Final verdict:

Both these teams are excited to be here and the defenses will probably be a major factor in the outcome. The defenses are basically a wash, but the Marshall offense with Litton are better, so I like the Thundering Herd to get'er done in St. Pete.

Marshall 24, UConn 10

Hyundai Sun Bowl

Weather: Cloudy, 20% rain at kickoff, but rain chances increase to 60% and 90% throughout the game. 47 high. Wind NNW @ 7 MPH

Line: Wash State by 2 1/2

Larry Scott will coach the Canes as Mark Richt comes in for the 2016 season for Miami, but Richt will have his stamp on this bowl game. Mike Leach, the mad scientist genius, is an offensive savant and has his quarterback, Luke Falk, leading the country in passing yards with 387.8. The Cougars have very good wide outs in Gabe Marks, who finished the regular season with 99 receptions for 1,125 yards and 14 TDs, and Dom Williams, who caught 73 passes for 997 yards and 11 sevens. They pass the ball all over the field, but will need to run it some if the weather forecast holds true. Gerard Wicks is their leading rusher with 599 yards and three TDs. Falk has completed 418-of-591 passes, 71%, for 4,266 yards, 36 TDs against eight ints.

The Canes are led by a gifted quarterback in Brad Kaaya, who completed 221-of-358 passes, 62%, for 3,019 yards, 15 TDs against only 4 ints. The Canes run the ball better than the Cougars, as tailback Joe Yearby rushed for 939 yards and six TDs, and Mark Walton added 438 yards and eight TDs.

Final decision

These are explosive offenses, but if the weather forecast is accurate, which is no guarantee, this will be a lower scoring game, but still a fun one. Like Leach and his Cougars to have a little more offense than the Canes.

Washington State 31, Miami 28

Line: Washington by 8 1/2

The Washington Huskies are excellent on defense and are led by senior linebacker Travis Feeny who has 15.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks this season. The Huskies defense has only given up 13 rushing TDs all year in 12 games. On offense, the Huskies are led by running back Myles Gaskin, who rushed for 1,121 yards on 201 carries this season for an average of 5.6 yards per carry and 10 TDs. Quarterback Jake Browning completed 63% of his passes, 210-of-334, for 16 TDs and 10 ints.

On the other side, Southern Miss is known for their offense. Running back Jalen Richard rushed for 1,098 yards and 14 TDs this season, while Ito Smith ran for 1,088 and eight TDs.

***Update*** Richard is out with a separated shoulder.

Quarterback Nick Mullens completed 63% of his passes, 306-of-483, for 36 TDs against 12 ints.

Final decision

With the expected weather conditions, the Huskies defense and pound it out running game should be a little better than Southern Miss's more wide open approach.

Weather: Cloudy, 51, 0% rain, wind NE 7 MPH

Line: Indiana by 2 1/2

Indiana running back Jordan Howard is a little banged up, but if he plays, which is very possible, he's excellent as he's rushed for 1,213 yards and nine TDs.  Update*** Howard is out.***

The backup to Howard, Devine Redding, has only rushed for 274 yards, but averaged 6.0 yards per carry in his last two games. Quarterback Nate Sudfield completed 219-of-361 passes, 61%, for 3,184 yards, 24 TDs and just five ints.

Duke counters with a good run defense which ranked 38th nationally against the run allowing just 3.4 yards per attempt. Duke is led by quarterback Thomas Sirk, who completed 234-of-390 passes, 60%, for 2,462 yards, 15 TDs against six interceptions. Sirk also rushed for 648 yards and six TDs. Running back Shaquille Powell rushed for 534 yards and three TDs. Sirk will need some help from Powell. DeVon Edwards has returned 3 kickoffs for sevens for Duke.

Final decision

I like David Cutcliffe's Blue Devils to play just a little better on offense than Indiana in what will be a highly entertaining game. Edwards will take one back to the house and the Blue Devils get over the top against the Hoosiers.

Duke 35, Indiana 31

Camping World Independence Bowl

Virginia Tech (6-6, 4-4 ACC) vs. Tulsa (6-6, 3-5

Talent: Dave Lamont, Ray Bentley, Jane Slater

Whistles: Big 12, Cooper Castleberry

Weather: Cloudy, 15% rain, wind SE 14 MPH

Line: Va Tech by 14

Va. Tech may be favored by 14, but they're really going to have to bear down in the secondary against all world receiver Keyarris Garrett of Tulsa. The 6'4", 221 pound senior caught 88 passes for 1,451 yards and seven TDs this season. He turned in six games of over 100 yards receiving and in two of his game,  he eclipsed 200 yards in receiving. He caught 14 passes for 268 yards in a 66-42 loss to Memphis on Oct. 23rd.

Frank Beamer has had to suspend three players for this game, so that's not  a good sign. One was a starter and two were backups.

I don't love the feel of this game for Va. Tech, even though it's Beamer's last game. I see it as a close contest. But I'll give Beamer a victory in the last game of his storied career at Virginia Tech. Va Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster's defense will do enough and the offense will too, as the Hokies will get by the Hurricane and send Beamer out a winner, barely.

Va. Tech 31, Tulsa 30

Foster Farms Bowl

Nebraska (5-7, 3-5 Big Ten) vs. UCLA (8-4, 5-4

ESPN

Talent: Jason Benetti, Rod Gilmore, Shelley Smith

Laundry: ACC, Ron Cherry

Weather: 50 clear, 0% rain, wind minimal, ENE 2 MPH

Line: UCLA by 6 1/2

This is a superb matchup in the nightcap between two explosive offenses. UCLA is led by talented freshman quarterback Josh Rosen, who completed 60% of his passes, 266-of-447, for 20 TDs against nine ints, and stud running back Paul Perkins, who rushed for 1,275 yards and 13 TDs. Wide receiver Jordan Payton led the team in receptions with 75 for 1,068 and four TDs, and Thomas Duarte caught 49 passes for 820 yards and 10 TDs.

Nebraska will counter with quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., who can be erratic, but can also be a weapon,. He completed 55% of his passes, 210-of-383, for 2,856 yards, 21 TDs, but threw 16 interceptions. Running back Terrell Newby rushed for 743 yards and five TDs, and Armstrong Jr., good runner, ran for 324 and six TDs.

Final decision

My question with UCLA every game is which team will show up; a team that is motivated to win a football game, or a team that is just going through the motions. Jim Mora Jr. is a good football coach, but he has trouble sometimes getting the southern California kids motivated. Nebraska will be fired up to show the country that even though they finished 5-7 this season, they are worthy of earning a bowl bid and will play extremely hard. They did upset Michigan State at home on Nov. 7th, 39-38, which looked at the time that it might ruin the Spartans chance at the playoff. But the Spartans came back and got in with a huge victory over Ohio State at Columbus.

But Perkins will be big on the ground, and Rosen will make some plays in the vertical game. Armstrong will have a good game, but he'll make a costly mistake or two. This should be an interesting matchup.

Nebraska is one of three teams that made bowl games with a 5-7 record. The other two are San Jose State and Minnesota. The NCAA did not have enough teams to fill out the 40 game bowl slate, so they did the best thing they could do; they filled the last three spots with the three teams that had the highest Academic Progress Reports. San Jose State did win their game over Georgia State, 27-16, in the Cure Bowl, and Minnesota plays Central Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl this Monday, 4 PM CT/5PM ET,  on ESPN.

Both teams have excellent tailbacks with Boise State featuring Jeremy McNichols, who has rushed for 1,244 yards and 18, sevens. He also has 46 receptions for 364 yards and five TDs., His 23 total TDs tied him with Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry for most in the nation this season.

Northern Illinois running back Joel Bouagnon led the MAC in rushing with 1,270 yards and 18 rushing TDs. If Bouagnon can have success running against a pretty good Broncos' rush defense, which was 13th nationally against the run, it should open up the passing game, though the Huskies have struggled with injuries at quarterback.

Boise State freshman quarterback Brett Rypien was the Mountain West freshman of the year. He passed for 2,976 yards and 17 TDs this season.

Both teams struggled somewhat this season at times, but this should be an interesting game with a lot of players with a ton of heart on both sidelines.

The MAC teams have been good in this postseason so far with both Akron and Toledo getting W's yesterday.  Terry Bowden and Akron defeated Utah State, 23-21, in a game which featured Utah State offensive coordinator Josh Heupel having major play calling problems. I was about to blow a gasket. Huepel's running back, Devante Mays, ran it 12 times for 124 yards, but Huepel didn't get him the ball enough. He could have run for 200 and Utah State would have won. Coach Matt Wells said the play calling was bad at halftime to the ESPN reporter, but Huepel didn't make any adjustments. But Akron deserves credit; they played a very good game. And Toledo dominated Temple impressively, 32-17. Ohio lost in the last seconds to App State on a late field goal, 31-29.

So this will be a highly competitive game. Boise State survives a great effort from the Huskies.

Bowling Green defensive coordinator Brian Ward will run the team tonight, and running backs coach Dell McGee will call the shots for Georgia Southern. Mike Jinks, who came over to Bowling Green from Texas Tech, where he was running backs coach, will be the new Bowling Green head coach in 2016. Tyson Summers, who was defensive coordinator at Colorado State this season, is the new coach for Georgia Southern in 2016.

This game could be sloppy. Hopefully there won't be lightning delays. Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson threw for 4,700 yards and 43 TDs this season against only eight ints. Roger Lewis led the team in receptions with 82. Running back Travis Greene run for 1,220 yards and 14 sevens this season.

Georgia State is all about the running game. The Eagles averaged 355.6 yards on the ground this season. Running back Matt Breida is the team's leading rusher with 1,540 yards and 16 TDs. L.A.Ramsby ran for 772 yards and Wesley Fields added 607. Quarterback Kevin Ellison rushed for 642 yards.

Should be a competitive game, with Bowling Green maybe limited in their passing game due to the weather. Like the Falcons to get by in a lower scoring game than anticipated due to the weather.

Like the Broncos of Western Michigan to be a little better in what should be an offensive shootout in Nassau. Quarterback play will be excellent with Western Michigan's Zach Terrell, who threw for 3,225 yards, squaring off with Middle Tennessee's Brent Stockstill. Stockstill threw for 3,678 yards and 27 TDs against only 8 ints this season. Both guys will be throwing it all over the yard. Western Michigan beat Toledo, 35-30, the final game of the regular season, so that's why I like them.

San Diego State started the season 1-3, but won their last nine games to win the Mountain West Conference Championship as they defeated Air Force in the championship game, 27-24, in Qualcomm Stadium. Running back Donnel Pumphrey is the go-to guy for the Aztecs. He ran for 1,554 yards and 16 TDs this season. Chase Price ran for 940 yards this season as Pumphrey's backup. The Bearacats' defense has given up 190.8 rushing yards per game this season so that could be a factor. Freshman Christian Chapman, who took the place of starter and Kentucky transfer Maxwell Smith, will most likely get his second start of the season as Smith is injured with an ACL tear. Smith wants to start, but he's questionable to doubtful for the game. Chapman started the Air Force game and finished 9 of 14 for 203 yards, pretty good. But they'll rely heavily on the ground game. Cincy will start Hayden Moore at quarterback. Starter Gunner Kiel is not going to the bowl for personal reasons, so the redshirt freshman from Clay Chalkville High School in Birmigham will get the start. Moore did throw four touchdowns at Memphis in a game Cincy should have won if it were not for some bad refereeing, and he's talented.

The San Diego State defense is pretty stout. They only gave up 17.2 points per game, generated 33 sacks, and led the country in turnover margin with plus 19 on 31 turnovers gained, including 20 interceptions and 11 forced and recovered fumbles. Cincy ranked 124th out of 128 teams in turnover margin with -16.

But I'm going for the upset in this one. Tommy Tuberville, Hayden Moore and the Bearcats' offense get it done over the Aztecs.

Breakdown:

Quarterback Kent Myers of Utah State is a little banged up, but he's probable to play. He completed 60% of his passes, 107-of-179, for 1,470 yards, 14 TDs against just 3 ints. Chuckie Keaton has been at Utah State for a while now and has been a decent quarterback, but he's been injured a lot. He comes in having played six games this season completing 90-0f-174 with 3 TDs and six ints. Myers is the better option, but Coach Matt Wells could use both. Davante Mays leads the team in rushing with 842 yards and 9 TDs, and Hunter Sharp is the top receiver with 60 receptions for 746 yards and eight 7's. Linebacker Nick Vigil leads the team in tackles and is tied for fifth in the country with 140. He also has 12.5 tackles for loss of -46 yards. Linebacker Kyler Fackrell leads the team in tackles for loss with 13.5 for -35 yards. Free safety Devin Centers leads the team in interceptions with three. Utah State holds opponents to 27 points per game.

Akron, under Terry Bowden, is in only their second bowl in their history since joining the FBS in 1987. Quarterback Thomas Woodson completed 53% of his passes, 148-of-278, for 2,034 yards, 16 TDs against 10 ints. Running back Conor Hundley ran for 883 yards and 10 TDs. Wide receiver Imani Davis finished the season with 46 receptions for 593 yards and three TDs, and wide out Jerome Lane added 35 receptions for 750 and eight 7's. Linebacker Jatavis Brown led the Zips in tackles with 108, added 17.5 tackles for loss of -98 yards and 10.5 sacks. Linebacker Dylan Evans posted 98 tackles and 10 tackles for loss. Cornerback DeAndre Scott was the team leader in interceptions with 6. The Zips defense only allowed 21.5 points per game but only 24 points per game in 12 games.

Verdict

Could be somewhat of a defensive battle here as both teams seem to play pretty good defense and the offenses aren't too prolific. I like the Aggies of Utah State to take care of business on the blue field in Boise today.

Temple knocked off Penn State, 27-10, barely lost to Notre Dame, 24-20, and crushed Memphis, 31-12. The Owls lost to Houston, 24-13, in the American Athletic Conference Championship game at Houston.

Toledo upset Arkansas the second game of the season, 16-12, and crushed Bowling Green, the MAC champions, 44-28, but lost to Western Michigan the last game of the season, 35-30, which kept them from reaching the MAC Championship game.

Temple running back Jahad Thomas rushed for 1,257 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. Quarterback P.J. Walker completed 223-of-391 passes, 57%, with 19 touchdowns against seven ints. He also has some pretty good wheels, too. Wide receiver Robby Anderson is a super player. He caught 64 passes for 873 yards and 7 TDs. Wide out Ventell Bryant added 37 receptions for 521 yards and 3 TDs. The Temple defense only gave up 19 points per game this season and were led by senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who posted 126 tackles, including 15 for a loss of -62 yards, which also led the team. Matakevich was also the team leader in interceptions with five. Defensive end Nate D. Smith (there's also a Nate L. Smith who plays cornerback) posted 9.5 tackles for loss of -53 yards and led the team in sacks with seven for -47 yards. The team had 101 tackles for loss, good for fifth in the country. The other book end, defensive end Haason Reddick, posted 12.5 tackles for loss of -56 yards and 5 sacks for -29 yards.

For Toledo, running back Kareem Hunt led the team in rushing with 894 yards and reached the end zone 10 times. Running back Terry Swanson ran for 87o yards and 7 TDs. Quarterback Phillip Ely, an Alabama transfer, completed 206-of-375 passes, 55%, for 2,680 yards, 21 TDs and 10 ints. Wide receiver Corey Jones led the team in receptions with 52 for 535 yards and four TDs. Wide out Cody Thompson added 33 receptions for 706 yards and four TDs. The other key wide out, Alonzo Russell, caught 33 passes for 586 yards and five TDs. Tight end Michael Roberts caught 18 passes for 188 yards and four TDs.

On defense, middle linebacker Chase Murdock led the defense in tackles with 78 and had 7.5 tackles for loss of -16 yards. Nose tackle Orion Jones is a disrupter. He led the team in tackles for loss with 11.5 for -49 yards and sacks with six for -39 yards. Cornerback Cheatham Norrils led the team in interceptions with three.

Verdict

Toledo Coach Matt Campbell left the team after the regular season to take the job at Iowa State. That will have a factor on this game with instability in the coaching staff. Plus, Temple is a very fine team with a good young coach in Matt Rhule. Toledo is a good team, too, but the upheaval of losing their coach, and the slight talent advantage at Temple will be the difference. Should be a good football game though.

About the teams:

Western Kentucky

It all starts with quarterback Brandon Doughty, the 6'3", 220 pound fifth year senior for the Hilltoppers. Doughty led the country in completion percentage this year and was second in the country in passing efficiency and second in passing yards. Doughty, in 13 games for the C-USA champs, completed 356-of-496 passes for 4,594 yards, 45 touchdowns and seven ints. His completion percentage was 72%. His 45 TD passes also led the country. He has an excellent arsenal to throw to in wide receiver Taywan Taylor, who caught 79 passes for 1,363 yards and 17 TDs. Jared "I just don't get no respect" Dangerfield caught 76 passes for 752 yards and seven TDs. Wide receiver Nicholas Norris caught 58 passes for 851 yards and four 7's, wide out Antwane Grant caught 48 passes for 620 yards and 7 TDs, and tight end Tyler Higbee caught 38 passes for 563 yards and eight scores. Running back is solid position as well. Tailback Anthony Wales ran for 986 yards on 141 carries (7.0 average) and seven TDs. D'Andre Ferby ran for 604 yards on 151 carries (4.0) and 11 TDs. They have 300 pounders on the offensive line led by redshirt junior Max Halpin (6'3", 295). All five starters are juniors are younger.

****Injury update: Higbee, the tight end, is out this game with a knee injury****

And while the Hilltoppers give up 391 yards per game on defense, they are tied for third in the country in turnovers gained with 31. Utah and Arkansas State led that category this season. The Hilltoppers are tied with San Diego State and West Virginia for third. They're also fourth in the country in turnover margin with a +16 advantage. San Diego State is first, Navy is second and Houston is third.

So this defense is opportunistic. They were down 21-7 to Southern Miss in the C-USA championship game, but with three interceptions and great offense, came back and won 45-28. Their defense is led in tackles by 6'3", 220 pound outside linebacker and UAB transfer T.J. McCollum. McCollum has 100 tackles on the season and leads the team with 11.5 tackles for loss of -30 yards. He also has three sacks. Middle linebacker Nick Holt has posted 84 tackles, 7.5 for loss of -35 yards and leads the team with four sacks. He also has three interceptions, which is second most on the defense. Free safety Branden Leston is second on the defense with 91 tackles. Cornerback Prince Charles (royalty?) Iworah leads the team in interceptions with four.

South Florida

South Florida averaged 33.5 points per game this season, and only gave up 21.1 points per game, good for 23rd in the country out of 128 teams in FBS. They gained 23 turnovers and were 18th in the country in turnover margin at +8. Their defense had 15 interceptions this season, tied for 21st nationally.

Quarterback Quinton Flowers had a solid season completing 149-of-244 passes (61%) for 2,023 yards, 21 TDs against eight ints. He also ran for 883 yards and 10 TDs. Marlon Mack was the workhorse in the backfield carrying it 193 times for 1,273 yards (6.6) and eight TDs. Darius Tice is a solid backup. He ran for 448 yards and four TDs. Rodney Adams led the wide receiving corps with 39 receptions for 692 yards (17.7 average per catch) and eight TDs. D'Ernest Johnson, another tailback, was effective catching passes out of the backfield with 26 for 356 yards (13.7) and four TDs. Tight end Sean Price was a weapon as he caught 19 passes for 296 yards (15.6) and five TDs. The o line is averages around 300-305 with fifth year senior center Brynjar Gudmundsson (6'4",300) anchoring it. This is a very good offense as well.

On defense, sophomore middle linebacker Auggie Sanchez (6'2", 244) led the team in tackles with 106 and added 8.5 tackles for loss of -25 yards. Safety Jamie Byrd added 80 tackles with 1o for loss of -48 yards, and led the team, along with defensive tackle Bruce Hector, (6'2", 295) with five sacks. Cornerback Deatrick Nichols led the team team with four interceptions. He made a house call with one of those ints. Strong safety Devin Abraham added three ints.

USF Coach Willie Taggert played quarterback at Western Kentucky from 1994-98 and was the head coach  there from 2010-12. He was 16-20 in three years, but went 7-5 his last two years and led them to the 2012 Little Caesar's Bowl.

Final Analysis:

This game could very well come down to who has the ball last. This should be an explosive game offensively with the team winning the turnover battle having a very good shot at victory as both these defenses are good at generating turnovers. This is a tough one, but Western Kentucky senior kicker Garrett Schwettman is 93% on kicks, 14-of-15, which leads the country. He's 2-for-2 from 40-49 yards with his long conversion of 46 yards. He hasn't tried one from over 50. I like Schwettman (Deutschland native possibly) to knock one through for the victory.

Western Kentucky 38, South Florida 35

Breakdown:

A good matchup in the Southwest. Kind of a Border War game between these two teams. New Mexico does have the home field advantage and an outstanding running game as they average 246 yards on the ground this season. The running game is led by super fast running back Jhurrel Pressley, who has rushed for 846 yards on 135 carries (6.3 ypc), with 11 TDs. Tenyon Gibson is also lightning fast at running back. He's another take it to the house guy for the Lobos. He has rushed for 766 yards on 132 carries (5.8) for 6 TDs. Quarterback Lamar Jordan has rushed for 672 yards and six scores and completes 53.2% of his passes going 58-of-109 for 935 yards, 4 TDs and six ints. The Lobos really rely heavily on the running game to move the sticks and generate sevens. The Lobos defense is led by middle linebacker Dakota Cox who has posted 89 tackles on the season, with 11 for loss of -29 yards and 5 sacks for -17. Cornerback Cranston Jones and free safety Markel Byrd lead the defense in interceptions with three apiece.

The Wildcats are coming off a disappointing season for them that was crippled by some key injuries that included all-star linebacker Scooby Wright, quarterback Anu Solomon and running back Nick Wilson. Wright and Solomon are back for the bowl game, and Wilson is most likely playing, too. Wright only played in two games this season, so his presence on the defense will be felt even if he's a little rusty. The 'Zona defense is led in tackles by combo linebacker/safety Will Parks, who's registered 72 tackles on the season, and 6.5 for loss of -17 yards. In 10 games this season, Solomon has completed 192-of-306 passes for 2,338 yards, 18 TDs and four ints. Pretty outstanding numbers. Wilson has rushed for 725 yards and eight TDs in nine games, and the backup quarterback Jerrard Randall has rushed for 702 yards and five TDs. Backup running back Jared Baker has rushed for 691 yards and 6 TDs. Wide out Cayleb Jones leads the Wildcats in receptions with 51 for 722 yards and four TDs. Johnny Jackson has added 50 receptions for 612 yards and five TDs, and Nate Phillips has caught 41 passes for 546 yards and four TDs. David Richards also has 41 receptions for 514 yards and five TDs.

Final Analysis

This should be an exciting offensive shootout with both teams having explosive running games and game changers on offense. New Mexico will give 'Zona everything they want, but Solomon and company will squeak it out.

Breakdown

BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall is leaving the program after 11 years to take the job at Virginia. That's a good hire for UVA; Mendanhall is a solid coach. It'll be interesting to see how the Cougars handle Mendenhall's last game at the helm. Freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum had an excellent year completing 242-of-390 passes (62%) for 3,062 yards, 21 TDs, and seven ints. Tailback Algernon Brown rushed for 697 yards and 11 TDs. Mitch Matthews is a tall, rangy receiver at 6'6", and the key target for Mangum, as he caught 52 passes for 729 yards and 11 TDs. Michael Wadsworth is the Cougars leading tackler with 79 on the season. Defensive end Bronson Kaufusi had a huge year recording 17 tackles for loss of -82 yards and 11 sacks for -71 yards. Safety Kai Nacua intercepted six passes on the season, two for house calls. BYU started off the season knocking off Nebraska, 33-28, on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game at Nebraska and then beat Boise State, 35-24, with some late game heroics as well. They lost to UCLA, 24-23, the third game of the season at UCLA, then got rocked by Michigan at the Big House, 31-0, but came back and won seven of their last eight. They should be pumped up to play their in-state rival.

Utah looked like one of the best teams in the country halfway through the season. The Utes beat Michigan to open up the season, 24-17, and crushed Oregon at Eugene, 62-20, the fourth game of the season that put them firmly in the discussion for the playoff. After beating Arizona State at home, 34-18, in game six to move to 6-0, they lost at USC, 42-24, and lost to Arizona at 'Zona, 37-30, in two overtimes, and UCLA, 17-9, at home. They finished off the year beating Colorado, 20-14, to cap off another solid season under Coach Kyle Whittingham. The tough news for Utah is they lost their top player, running back Devontae Booker, to a knee injury after the 10th game of the season. Booker had rushed for 1,261 yards and 11 TDs and looked like one of the best backs in the country with a bright future on the next level. That could still very well happen, but for now, he's on the shelf in this game. Joe Williams will take over duties at RB. In nine games, Williams rushed for 386 yards and 1 score. Quarterback Travis Wilson may have to carry a lot of the load in this game and he's highly capable. Wilson rushed for 467 yards and six TDs, and completed 186-of-298 passes (62%) for 2,024 yards, 13 TDs against 10 ints. He can struggle with accuracy at times, so the Utes O line will have to protect him against a fierce pass rushing team so he isn't forced to make a bad decision and throw an int to the opportunistic BYU secondary. Wide receiver Britain Covey has caught 41 passes for 518 yards and four TDs, and wide out Kenneth Scott has caught 38 passes for 448 and four TDs.

The Utes have a pretty tough defense as well led by linebacker Paul Gionni who finished the season posting 109 tackles, 12.5 for loss of -42 yards, three sacks, and four ints. Utah had 86 tackles for loss of -343 yards. Defensive end Jason Fanaika led the way with 9.5 for -38. On the other side, defensive end Kylie Fitts led the defense with six sacks for-43 yards. Free safety Marcus Williams led the team with five interceptions for 88 yards.

 Final Analysis

This should be a stellar game. BYU could be playing with a lot of passion for their coach who will be leaving them after the game. Or they could be disappointed in him and not play with as much passion. Knowing BYU, it'll most likely be the former. But Whittingham has established a tough, hard-nosed, sold football program in Salt Lake City. Like the Utes to get the job done here, but not by much, and in a classic.

Breakdown

App State had a tremendous year in their first year to qualify for a bowl game in FBS play. They are unquestionably led by running back Marcus Cox, who rushed for 1,261 yards and eight TDs, although he was hurt late in the season. But he'll be ready to go late this afternoon in Montgomery. Jalin Moore is a good backup RB who rushed for 635 yards on 86 carries, 7.4 yards a pop, and five TDs. Quarterback Taylor Lamb had a big season for the Mountaineers, completing 157-of-257 passes, 61%, for 2,263 yards, 29 TDs against 8 ints. Wide receiver Simms McElfresh hauled in 33 passes for 424 yards and six TDs. Tight end Barrett Burns caught 12 passes for 131 yards, but six of them were for TDs. On defense, App State ranked 12th nationally in yards allowed per game, and registered four defensive touchdowns, good for seventh in the country. Defensive end Ronald Blair is the Bell Cow of the defense as he posted 18 tackles for loss of 87 yards and 7.5 sacks for -63 yards. Cornerback Latrell Gibbs was a ballhawk with six interceptions for 138 yards including two for TDs. This is a very solid, aggressive unit that can be game changing.

Ohio was solid in the MAC and overall, but they are 2-6 in their last eight bowl appearances missing out last year despite a 7-5 record. They'll have a two quarterback platoon system with Derrius Vick, who completed 158-of-248 passes (64%) for 1,807 yards, 10 TDs and six ints, and J.D. Sprague, who completed 50-of-88 passes (57%) for 789 yards, seven TDs and only one int splitting time under center. A.J. Ouelettte leads the team in rushing. The RB has 642 yards on the season with five TDs. Daz'mond Patterson has rushed for 497 yards and 9 TDs. Wide out Sebastian Smith has 62 receptions for 754 yards and seven TDs. Wide out Jordan Reid registered 45 receptions for 616 yards and five TDs. On defense, middle linebacker Quentin Poling leads the unit with 8.5 tackles for loss of 39 yards, four sacks for -30 yards and three interceptions.

Final Analysis

Ohio is a solid team, but App State with the running game led by Marcus Cox and the quarterback play of Taylor Lamb and a stout defense will be too much for the Bobcats to overcome.

For San Jose State it's about their running back, Tyler Ervin. Ervin ran for 1,469 yards this season and 13 touchdowns averaging 5.6 yards per carry and 122 yards per game. He's their workhorse and he has great speed, so a house call or two from distance wouldn't be a surprise with Ervin. Quarterback Kenny Potter is pretty adept, too, as he completed 172-of-251 passes, 69%, for 1,895 yards and 14 touchdowns against six ints. His favorite target is tight end Billy Freeman who pulled in 47 passes for 581 yards and six TDs. Wide receiver Tim Crawley caught 39 passes for 424 yards and five TDs. The defense is led by outside linebacker Christian Tago, who posted 117 tackles on the season with nine tackled for a loss of 34 yards. Free safety Maurice McKnight added 95 tackles and an interception. Cornerbacks Jimmy Pruitt and Cleveland Wallace each had three interceptions, with each one taking one back for a house call.

Georgia State is led by their quarterback Nick Arbuckle who completed 293-of-457 passes (64%) for 4,160 yards, 26 TDs against 11 ints. Wide receiver Penny Hart led the receiving corps with 70 catches for 1,085 yards (15.5 average) and eight TDs. Wide out Robert Davis added 60 receptions for 979 yards (16.3) and six TDs. And tight end Keith Rucker had 39 receptions for 522 yards and six TDs. The running game isn't that prolific as tailback Glenn Smith led the team in rushing with only 353 yards and one TD. Backup running back Kyler Neal ran for 330 yards and five TDs. Inside linebacker Joseph Peterson leads the defense in tackles with 106, and has 7.5 for loss and two sacks. Strong safety Tarris Batiste added 95 tackles, 6.5 for loss and four interceptions for 56 yards. Linebacker Alonzo McGee led the team in tackles for loss with 12 for -38 yards.

Final Analysis

When it comes down to it, Georgia State relies heavily on the passing game while San Jose State is more balanced and has an outstanding running back in Ervin and a good quarterback in Potter. They also are pretty good at interceptions. So I like Ervin and San Jose State to get the job done in ana explosive offensive game.

La Tech will be led at quarterback by Florida transfer Jeff Driskel, who's flourished under Coach Skip Holtz completing 255-of-412 passes (62%) for 3,575 yards, and 24 TDs against eight ints. Running back Kenneth Dixon has rushed for  968 yards and 17 TDs. Driskel has added 307 yards on the ground and five TDs. Driskel's top target is wide receiver Trent Taylor, who has pulled in 89 passes for 1,133 yards and eight TDs. Wide out Curtis Henderson has added 35 receptions for 721 yards and five TDs, and wide out Paul Turner has 40 catches for 560 yards and three TDs. Dixon also has five TD catches. On defense, SAM linebacker Beau Fitte leads the defense with 97 tackles with six for loss. He also has two interceptions. Middle linebacker Nick Thomason has posted 76 tackles and leads the defense in tackles for loss with 12.5 for -35 yards. Defensive end Jaylon Ferguson leads the team in sacks with six. Cornerback Bryson Abraham is the defense's leader in interceptions with 3 for 109 yards.

Arkansas State has a workhorse at running back and a stellar signal caller. Tailback Michael Gordon rushed for 1,070 yards this season and nine TDs. Backup Johnston White added 573 yards and 14 sevens. Quarterback Fredi Knighton completed 122-of-223 passes (55%), for 1,698 yards and 19 TDs against 7 ints. His leading receivers are slot back J. D. McKissic, who caught 49 passes for 499 yards and two TDs, and wide receiver Tres Houston, who caught 33 passes for 568 yards and 10 TDs.

On defense, the Red Wolves led the country in forced turnovers with 34, with 26 interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. Strong safety Hunter Money WAS money with three interceptions for 128 yards. Two of those ints Money took back to the house. Middle linebacker Quanterio Heath also had an interception for a score. Defensive end Ja'Von Rolland-Jones has led the team with 12 tackles for loss of -69 yards and posted a team leading 9 sacks for -61 yards.

Final Analysis

This is the 38th meeting between the two teams. La Tech holds a 25-12 advantage with their last encounter in 1998 when La Tech steamrolled the Red Wolves, 69-21. But this is a different Arkansas State team. With a solid running game led by Gordon and a dual threat QB in Knighton, and a super opportunistic defense, I like Arkansas State to finish off the season winning nine games in a row in what should be a fast paced, electric game offensively.

The big news is that Kirby Smart will take over at Georgia, though he's still got work left to do in Tuscaloosa.

A possible replacement for Kirby would be first year secondary coach Mel Tucker. Mel has done an excellent job with the secondary, which has played lights out for the most part this season, and was the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears the prior two seasons before coming to Tuscaloosa this year. His defenses were not great at Chicago, but it was more about personnel than Mel's coaching. I watched him frequently on the sideline for the Bears and he was intense and controlled, unlike Will Muschamp, who is intense and out of control. Mel would be a very good choice by S and would be an outstanding recruiter for Alabama.

Kirby has left his mark as one of the best assistant coaches the Crimson Tide has ever had and there have been some great ones from Brother Bill Oliver to the great defensive coordinator under Bear Bryant, Ken Donahue. The Bear said one time when he was driving by the Crimson Tide football offices with a media member and Donahue had his light on in his office at 11 PM one night, "He's making me a millionaire."

Kirby may be the greatest of all time and this is the best defense he and S have put together in Tuscaloosa and that's a high bar. The 2011 defense was stellar, and the first national title defense in 2009 was as well. But I like the front wall of this group with Jonathan Allen. Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson and the awesome linebackers Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster.

Derrick Henry has rushed for 1,797 yards on 295 carries, 6.1 yards per pop, and taken it to the house 22 times. He averages 150 yards per game. Those numbers are super stellar. What a year the Tide junior stud has had. With another 100+ yard game and a seven or two, Henry will solidify his hold on the Heisman. He's got it right now. Derrick should take home the hardware next Saturday, December 12th, from the Big Apple.

The Crimson Tide wants a national championship. This is the next step. If the Tide takes care of Florida, they could very well be facing Oklahoma in a semifinal game unless the Big Ten champ jumps the Sooners or Clemson loses, which are possibilities. If the Tide and OU matchup in the semifinals, that would be a heckuva game.

Should be a good game between two solid teams that have excellent coaches and very fundamentally sound teams. Like Sparty, Coach Mark Dantonio and quarterback Connor Cook, to take the Big Ten Championship and make it in as the No.4 seed in the playoff most likely though there would be a chance for Michigan State to move up if there are losses ahead of them. Michigan State will have earned its playoff spot with victories over Michigan and Ohio State on the road. Their only loss came on a phantom touchdown at Nebraska at the end of the game, where the Nebraska receiver went out of bounds, and caught the TD pass with 3o seconds left, but the ref ruled that the receiver was pushed out which I didn't see. If the receiver goes out of bounds and comes back in play and catches the ball, it's an incomplete pass and a penalty. The Big Ten refs gave Nebraska that one, but Michigan State has taken care of business and I like them to do it against the Hawkeyes.

If Clemson or Alabama were to lose, and it's much more likely that it would be Clemson than Bama, that would open the door for the Cardinal. Not predicting that's going to happen, but if that does and the Cardinal take care of business, they could be in the playoff, though there would be a major debate among committee members on whether Stanford or Ohio State should make it in. If Stanford won their conference championship game with the schedule they've played, out of conference games vs. No. 14 Northwestern, a 16-6 loss in their first game of the season at Northwestern, and No.8 Notre Dame, a 38-36 thriller last Saturday on the Farm, and the nine game Pac-12 schedule, versus Ohio State's much softer schedule, the Cardinal should get in. I like Stanford to get'er done and hope for a Clemson loss.

Rivalry Week, Week 13

A'Shawn Robinson and the Tide front seven is impenetrable An epic holiday weekend in college football in what has proven to be a superbly stellar season. And there are is a massive amount of riveting games in college football this Thanksgiving weekend. Of course, the 80th Iron Bowl is the headliner in Alabama, but also in the SEC, and in the national landscape, there are high quality match ups that include teams homing in on the college football playoff  or vying to get into a quality bowl game, or a bowl game period. A lot to break down today. Here's a look at the weekend's rivalry games.

They say you never know in this one. Stranger things have happened in this game. But not this year. Alabama's defense is better than more than three quarters of the defenses in the National Football League. The front seven is impenetrable against the run. The offense thrives on explosive plays with the awesome Derrick Henry, who, if he has another big game this week and next week, should secure the Heisman Trophy, and super freshman Calvin Ridley who makes explosive play after explosive plays after catching passes from Jake Coker. Calvin is a house call waiting to happen every time he touches the football. Cyrus Jones has secured first round draft pick status with his riveting punt returning ability this season as he has taken three to the house and has shown awesome leadership and playmaking ability in the secondary. I would say the entire starting 11 on defense will play in the NFL. I'll go further and say there are probably 20-22 who will play in the National Football League. On offense, there are quite a few as well. It's been a struggle for the Tigers this season. Gus will have all his tricks and schemes on display at Jordan-Hare, but it's not going to be enough to overcome the best team in the country. Jovon Robinson is becoming a superb running back, Peyton Barber is solid, Roc Thomas and Kerryon Johnson are explosive playmakers who can make house calls if they get past the front seven of the Crimson Tide. But I don't see Auburn figuring out how to run against this defense. Nobody else has been able to. Jeremy Johnson or Sean White will have to figure out ways through the air to keep Auburn in the game. The Auburn defense, which has improved somewhat over the season, will be severely tested by Henry and the emerging Bo Scarbrough. Kenyon Drake is a week or two away from being healthy, but Scarbrough showed last week that he is highly capable of becoming the second viable option to Henry. Damien Harris could be a stud, too. It's a juggernaut coming down from Tuscaloosa.  The Crimson Tide is shooting for a fourth national championship in the last seven years. This is another step for them on their journey to win it all. Plenty of work left after the Iron Bowl though. But you gotta like the Tide to take care of business on the Plains.

Another classic Egg Bowl as they have become in the past couple of years. Ole Miss started the season with hopes of winning both the SEC and the national titles. That hasn't happened with some slip ups, but they've had a fine season and are coming off a 38-17 thrashing of LSU, which has the LSU partisans after Les Miles' job. State is coming off a riveting 51-50 victory over a then red hot Arkansas team after the Bulldogs got blasted by Alabama the week before. It was such a super impressive showing by the superb Dak Prescott, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for a couple of more against Arkansas. Both teams are aiming at a very good bowl and both will get it, particularly the winner here. Dak has magic and he'll put on a masterful performance in his final home game in Starkville in what should be a stellar football game.

Dabo Swinney has put together a terrific season in Clemson. They have an electric quarterback in Deshaun Watson and a phenomenal running back in Wayne Gallman. The offense is highly explosive and the defense is extremely solid. The Gamecocks are trying to regroup and get ready for next year. A victory here would be a huge boost to their program that has really bottomed out this season. But it's too much to ask against a team that could very well be headed to the College Football Playoff as the No.1 seed if they can take care of business this week and next against North Carolina in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte.

Jim McElwain has crafted an impressive season in his first year in Gainesville. The Gators will more than likely play Alabama next Saturday in the SEC Championship game, and a victory here could get them possibly back in the playoff hunt. But the Gators' offense has been anemic recently, and they don't have enough firepower to keep up with the Noles, which, despite a somewhat down year for them by their standards, are still a good football team. I like Dalvin Cook to churn some serious yards out, and the Noles to get it done in the Swamp.

It's been a disappointing season in Athens and people are a little restless with Mark Richt, as usual. But a victory over one of their chief rivals and a bowl victory would ease some of the painful losses against Alabama, Tennessee and Florida. Tech has really struggled this season after coming off an outstanding season last year that was capped off by an Orange Bowl victory over Mississippi State. It's been a tough year for Paul Johnson and company. Sony Michel will be too much for the Tech defense to handle and the Dawgs will get some momentum heading into what should be a pretty good bowl game.

The Dores have shown a lot of improvement in Coach Derek Mason's second season winning SEC games over Missouri and Kentucky. The defense, for the most part, has been pretty stellar. The offense has not. Coach Mason needs to get better play on offense if he wants to start beating teams like Tennessee and South Carolina, and maybe even Georgia or Florida in the future. But he doesn't have enough offense this Saturday. His defense will keep it competitive, but quarterback Joshua Dobbs and running back Jalen Hurd will make some plays in the passing and running game respectively. Dobbs will do it in both areas. Vanderbilt will have to find ways to move the chains, keep the Vols' offense off the field and get it in the end zone. I just don't think they can do enough in Knoxville to come away with the W. UT finishes its regular season at 8-4, a solid year with a solid bowl forthcoming.

It'll ruin Baylor's chances of making the playoff though they would need some chaos ahead of them to get in there anyway.  Baylor will be without injured quarterback Jarrett Stidham and TCU is without injured stud wide receiver Josh Doctson and quite possibly injured quarterback Trevone Boykin, though Boykin has a shot to play. AU by 1 1/2

Should be an excellent game at Auburn. The question for both sides is at quarterback. I am hearing that Jeremy Johnson will get the start for Auburn, but that Sean White will be able to play. Gus and Rhett Lashlee will see how Jeremy is doing, and if he's struggling, they'll turn to White. For Georgia, two quarterbacks will most likely play. Greyson Lambert has shown signs of being decent but Brice Ramsey is average at best. Mark Richt will probably start Lambert and then see how he does. The running game will be critical for both sides. Jovon Robinson has been a horse the last two weeks running for 250 yards and a seven, and Peyton Barber has been steady and solid all season with 828 yards on the ground and 12 TDs. Kerryon Johnson gives AU the take it to duh house threat if he can get in the open field, though Robinson can make explosive plays as well. Georgia will rely on the super running back Sony Michel, who has rushed for 747 yards and 7 TDs. Keith Marshall has done a pretty good job in relief with Nick Chubb out for the season. Marshall has rushed for 255 yards and three TDs. Brendan Douglas is a big back for Georgia who's pretty good as well. Douglas gets tough yards and runs hard.

The rushing attacks for both sides should excel on Saturday, but at some point each team will have to throw it. I like AU's defense's three ints last week against A&M. Freshman Carlton Davis is playing extremely well at corner for the Tigers. He has three interceptions on the year. He's going to be a superstar. He already is a stellar player. The defense played really well last week. The Georgia defense shut down Kentucky, 27-3, so they are capable.

The Tigers will have to throw it some to win this game. So will the Dawgs. The Tigers are at home and played a heckuva game last week. They need this victory to become bowl eligible.

The only way to beat Alabama is to pass it well and maybe setup some kind of running game. But as Leonard Fournette found out last Saturday Night in Tuscaloosa, it's next to impossible to run on the Crimson Tide front seven. State does have Dak Prescott. Dak has completed 200-of-300 passes, 67%, for 2,351 yards and 18 TDs against only one interception. That's sensational. He has also rushed for 418 yards and seven TDs. He makes State go. De'Runnya Wilson is Dak's go to receiver in the passing game. He has 37 receptions for 548 yards and eight TDs. Fred Ross has 51 receptions for 548 yards and two TDs. Brandon Holloway is a fast running back and has rushed for 220 yards and six TDs. He's not a power guy, they really don't have that, but he has excellent speed.

Priority one for the Tide defense is stopping Dak. He's actually having a better season than he has ever had at State. Awesome guy, too. Love Dak.

Derrick Henry has been phenomenal this season and has certainly stated his case so far for the Heisman Trophy. He has run for 1,254 yards, and leads the SEC  in rushing touchdowns with 17. He ran for 210 yards and three TDs against LSU last week. Wow, he was good. The offensive line is really clicking for the Tide. It goes almost without saying; this defense is all time good right now. I'd put it up there with some of the best defenses in college football history, particularly the front seven. The back four are really playing well, too, though they're still sometimes vulnerable to the deep ball.

For State to win, Dak will have to play the best game of his career and the State defense will have to somehow stop Henry and make Jake Coker beat them in the passing game. State's got a pretty good defense. They will give Alabama a pretty good challenge in Starkville, but I like the Crimson Tide to prevail at the end. One thing that might have been overlooked in the Tide's domination of LSU last week was Adam Griffith's 55 yard field goal. That was beautiful. S says he does that all the time in practice, and if he can start converting on field goal opportunities consistently, that would be a huge boost to the team. Looks like he's gotten it down.

Bret Bielema and the Hogs got an improbable and hard fought victory at Ole Miss. That game was electric offensively. Brandon Allen and the Hogs prevailed 53-52 on some of the most impossible plays I've ever seen. The backwards lateral from tight end Hunter Henry at the Ole Miss 26 yard line that landed in Alex Collins hands on the Ole Miss 42 which Collins ran for  a first down on fourth and 25 in the overtime period and even fumbled before Arkansas recovered at the eight and then scored.  After Ole Miss thought they had the game won in overtime when Allen threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, an Ole Miss defender committed a face mask, and Arkansas took it in and converted the two point conversion on a gutsy call by Bielema in overtime. It was amazing. That was an all time exciting college football game. Arkansas is a good football team. Leonard Fournette is probably pretty ticked off though and so is his team after getting blasted by the Crimson Tide last Saturday Night and with Fournette only rushing for 31 yards. Fournette should have a big game. I think Arkansas has a shot here though. This team has some magic to it. And as a matter of fact, I'm going with the upset here.

I love the job that Shawn Elliott is doing as interim head coach at SC. He's making a strong case to be the head coach for the future at South Carolina. If he can pull this off and be really competitive the rest of the season, and maybe knock off Clemson at home, he should be South Carolina's full time head coach going forward. He seems like a great guy and he has the team pumped. They lost a heartbreaker in Knoxville last Saturday, 27-24, when they were driving for the winning seven with under a minute left, but tight end Jerrell Adams, after making a nice catch and a heckuva run after the catch, unfortunately fumbled at the UT 18 and UT recovered to claim the victory. But it was an awesome effort by the Gamecocks. Florida just got by a heckuvan effort by the Vanderbilt defense a week ago in the Swamp. The Gators survived the Dores 9-7 on a late field goal that clinched the SEC East.

But I'm going to go for another upset here. Love what Shawn Elliott is doing.

Derek Mason had his defense ready to play last Saturday in Gainesville and they should have won the game. They had four turnovers and didn't turn the ball over once. They shut down Florida's offense. They just need to get better play from quarterback Johnny McCrary. Johnny has talent, he just needs to hit some throws Saturday and get some confidence. VU's strategy is to play stellar defense, run the football, and take care of the ball. That's their formula until McCrary starts passing the ball better. Not sure about Kentucky. They look a little bit in disarray right now after last week's debacle at Georgia. Patrick Towles can be good at quarterback at times and Boom Williams will be back this week at running back so that gives the Wildcats a good shot. But I'm going to go with Vandy to pull it off here. Coach Mason is turning the corner at Vanderbilt and laying the foundation for success the rest of this season and into the future.

BYU isn't intimidated to play anywhere. They just line it up and say bring it on. Missouri is totally dysfunctional right now with the racial stuff going on at the school. It's not a good situation with the Missouri Chancellor and the President of the system resigning. They need to work this out for the students and clear this thing up so the students and the faculty can concentrate on making the school the best it can be. This major situation has to be a distraction for the football team. It'll cost the Tigers this Saturday because BYU is a good football team and they don't care about Missouri's issues.

I watched the Sooners blast Iowa State last night, and am very impressed with their football team. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is playing at a very high level this season completing 193-of-275 passes, which is 70.2%, for 2,812 yards, 28 TDs and just four ints. Running back Samaje Perine is a stud with 806 yards and 10 TDs. Joe Mixon has added 528 yards and five TDs at rb. Jarrett Stidham is a super talented freshman quarterback for Baylor and put on a nice show last Thursday Night in the Little Apple completing 23-of-33 passes for 419 yards and three TDs against no interceptions in a 31-24 Baylor victory over K State. They've got playmakers through the roof at Baylor led by standout wide receiver Corey Coleman, who caught 11 passes for 216 yards and two sevens against K State, and running back Shock Linwood, who rushed for 72 yards, decent, against Kansas State. Coleman has caught 58 passes for 1,178 yards and 20 TDs this season, which is tied for the lead nationally in TDs with Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon. That's outrageously good. Linwood has run for 1,046 yards and nine, sevens on the season. Another guy to look out for in the Oklahoma offense is Sterling Shepard, who's caught 47 passes for 826 yards and seven TDs.

This will be a classic in Waco. I like the Sooners to prevail and really make a move in the national picture after this victory. Really like this OU team

Ohio State is showing some of the same dysfunction that FSU showed last year. Maybe to the degree of the Jameis fiasco, but J.T. Barrett, the starting quarterback and a team captain, got a DUI two weeks ago, and that's not a great sign. He got suspended for a game and he's back. I hope the committee really watches this team closely over the next four weeks and sees if they are really worthy of being in the playoff. They made the mistake last year picking FSU over a better TCU team that had a chance to win it all, and FSU was a disaster in the semifinal as they got blasted by Oregon. I hope the committee remembers that, though the Buckeyes have some serious work left. Illinois is not bad. but they're not very  good either, so this is a W. But then it gets serious for the Buckeyes. Michigan State at home and at Harbaugh and Michigan. This team will have to earn it and they should have to.

Now while I said I like Notre Dame, but don't love them, I am very bullish on the Cardinal. They have a complete football team in every phase of the game. Christian McCaffrey may be the most underrated superstar in college football. He's rushed for 1,207 yards and six TDs this season. He's also caught two passes for sevens. His touchdown total may not be enough to keep up with Henry and Corey Coleman, but he's quite a football player. Quarterback Kevin Hogan's got it together and thrown for 16 TDs against just six ints. He's struggled with accuracy in the past, but is clicking now as he's completing 133-of-201 passes, 66%, for 1,831 yards. Hogan has also rushed for 226 yards and 3 sevens. Their defense is very good. They have it all, much like Alabama, Clemson, possibly, and I'm starting to think Oklahoma too. I'm really starting to like North Carolina as well. Like Stanford to take care of business at home over an Oregon team that is not playing up to Oregon standards under third year coach Mark Helfrich.

He really deserves a shot for the head job if this continues throughout the rest of the season especially if  SC beats UCLA. They'll need some help from UCLA in the Pac 12 South to get to the Pac 12 title game. UCLA will have to beat Utah and SC will have to beat the Bruins. USC blasted Utah at home a couple of weeks ago. It's certainly possible. Running backs Ronald Jones and Justin Davis are absolute studs. Jones had an incredible 74 yard touchdown run against 'Zona last week. He's awesome. Jones has run for 710 yards and six scores, and Davis has added 420 yards and five, 7's. Tre Madden was the starter, but he's been hurt some, and Jones has definitely picked up the slack. Clash of the Titans, Fournette (above) and Henry

Should be a spectacle at Bryant-Denny on Saturday night with the No.4 ranked Tide squaring off with the No.2 Bengal Tigers of LSU. These rankings are the College Playoff rankings and they are what matter now. They've called these games between the Tide and LSU the games of the century, and this looks like another. Playoff implications should be decided after this one. If the Tide loses, it might be curtains, though not totally, but they would need a lot of help. If LSU loses, it would be tough for them because they also have to go to Ole Miss. The Tide has a tough one at State next Saturday, too. But this is the one that matters right now. Tremendous matchup. Preview and prediction below. AU heads to College Station to face the 12th man and the Texas A&M Aggies. Excellent matchup here. A&M has a young, dynamic freshman quarterback who took over last Saturday and was very impressive against South Carolina. The Tigers need a victory desperately, just for something positive to happen on the Plains.

Clemson is No.1 in the College Playoff rankings, LSU is No.2, Ohio State is No.3 and Bama is No.4. Notre Dame is at five, Baylor at 6, and the Bears will start a much decorated freshman quarterback tonight in place of the injured Seth Russell, who is out for the season with a broken bone in his neck. That's tough, so it'll be interesting to see what 59 year old head coach Art Briles (60 on Dec 3rd) and his son,  32 year old offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Kendal Briles, can do with this five-star super freshman Jarrett Stidham, who was the number two dual threat quarterback in the country in the 2015 class behind Texas A&M freshman starting quarterback Kyler Murray. Murray was the number one player in Texas and No. 33 overall in the 247 sports player rankings for 2015, and Stidham was the second best player in Texas and the 38th best player in the country.  Briles and his quarterback Stidham play in the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kansas, tonight against the Kansas State Wildcats. It'll be a 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET kickoff on Fox Sports 1. Michigan State is No.7 and very much in the mix, as is No.8 TCU, No.9 Iowa, though I think they're a little bit of a joke, but No.10 Florida is pretty for real. Stanford, at No.11, is a factor. They're a complete football team. Memphis at No.13 can be a playoff buster if they continue their winning ways. Oklahoma State at No.14 and Oklahoma at No.15 are very much factors. Some huge matchups in the Big 12 in November which will weed teams out with their champion claiming a strong case for getting in the playoff. I think it'll happen for the Big 12 this season. They've got quality teams and good depth. I'd say they're the second best conference in the country after the SEC.

A lot of excellent matchups in the SEC and nationally with a huge one in Clemson as the No.1 Tigers host the Florida State Seminoles in Death Valley for a 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET kickoff on ABC Saturday. FSU is No.16 in the poll and has an interesting quarterback decision to make which I will discuss below. FSU has had Clemson's number the last couple of years, so Saturday is huge for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. Another tremendous matchup with major national implications features No.8 TCU @ No.14 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma. TCU is getting healthier on defense and their offense is dynamic led by their super studs, quarterback Trevone Boykin and wideout Josh Doctson, but OK State is stellar on offense as well, and will provide a stern test for the Horned Frogs. 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on FOX Saturday. TCU is playing better defense and OK State, while not lockdown on defense, always creates a lot of turnovers. So this one will be compelling.

Here's a look at this week's lineup.

There is heavy rain expected Saturday, but it looks like it might dissipate by the end of the first quarter or even the start of the game. Still a wet field and probably slick balls could be a factor. Ball security will be at a premium. The headliners are Leonard Fournette and Derrick Henry. Fournette has rushed for 1,352 yards and 15 TDs. He's averaging 7.7 yards per carry and 193 yards per game. Henry has rushed for 1,044 yards, 14 TDs,  5.8 per pop and 130 yards per game. Fournette leads the country in rushing and Henry is ninth. Fournette, of course, leads the SEC, and Henry is second. This may be a ground and pound game, though if the rain lets up, Jake Coker and Brandon Harris will need to make plays with their arms. I'm predicting the weather will be similar to the Alabama-Georgia game where there will still be some passing. In these colossal blockbusters with the most physical teams in college football, the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball for both teams will be critical. LSU has an excellent offensive line, so Jonathan Allen, Jarran Reed , A'Shawn Robinson and company will have to be disruptive up front and put pressure on Harris when he passes. Stopping Fournette is job one for the Crimson Tide and then they'll have to get pressure on Harris so he can't get the ball to game changing wide outs Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural. Linebackers Reggie Ragland, Ruben Foster and Dillon Lee will have to be big factors in stopping the run and preventing Fournette from making big plays catching swing passes. And LSU loves to run the quick toss sweep to Fournette, so cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Cyrus Jones will have to contain and may be called on to tackle that manster at 235 pounds truckin at them with 4.4 speed. The secondary with Eddie Jackson, Geno Matias-Smith at safeties and Minkah Fitzpatrick at the star will be challenged vertically and on the ground to make stops if Fournette gets by the front seven. The defensive line for Alabama will need to get pressure on Harris, so he's not free to have time to find Dupre and Dural for explosive, take-it- to-duh- house plays. The Crimson Tide defense will be severely tested.

On the other side of the ball, Ryan Kelly and the Tide offensive line will be challenged by a big, physical front for the Bengal Tigers. They need to give Henry space to operate and allow Coker time to find his playmakers, Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart, who were huge in the 19-14 victory over Tennessee two weeks ago. Richard Mullaney has played well for the Tide at the other wide out spot. He's an outstanding possession receiver. O.J. Howard is playing a bigger role in the offense, and he could really help Coker out in the passing game. LSU is completely healthy in the secondary now with safety Jalen Mills and corner Tre'Davious White being big time NFL prospects.

This is colossal. The line of scrimmage, taking care of the football, running it well and making a couple of explosive plays in the running and passing games will decide the outcome of this one. Kicker Adam Griffith for Alabama and Trent Dominigue for LSU could be called upon to make a crucial field goal or two. I know S will be hesitant to use Griffith. He's questionable at best.

Will be epic. Like the Tide to get the job done here with the home field and the overall better personnel on defense. But it'll be a 15 rounder.

It's been a really tough year for the Plainsmen. A&M got an excellent performance out of true freshman quarterback Kyler Murray last Saturday as he was 20 of 28 for 223 yards, a seven, and no interceptions. And what was really awesome was his running. He ran for 156 yards and another seven. He's come in for Kyle Allen, who has been struggling with a bad shoulder and has not been the quarterback they wanted him to be ever since the Alabama game, in which he threw four ints, two for pick sixes. But Murray is lethal with his wheels and pretty accurate with his arm. Tre Carson is a pretty good running back. A&M only beat South Carolina 35-28 last Saturday, but it was a well played game. South Carolina is better without Spurrier. Coach Shawn Elliott has put some new life into their program and they're playing better football. Meanwhile, AU is desperate right now for a victory. Peyton Barber and quarterback Sean White are a little banged up, but they'll tough it out this week. Jovon Robinson actually ran it pretty well in Barber's absence. He ran for 91 yards.  Kerryon Johnson can be a stud and so can Roc Thomas, if he can for once stay healthy during a game. Auburn has a running game that can gash A&M, and if White is OK, he can throw it around some. But it's the defense that's the issue for the Tigers. They can't seem to get stops when they need them. The Tigers will play good offense and this will be a good game, but I like A&M to prevail at the end.

Jim McElwain has done a tremendous job with the Gators. They shouldn't have too much trouble in the Swamp with a reeling Vandy team. Florida is right there in the national picture. They will make it by running the table in the regular season and winning the SEC title game. If they do that, they're in. That would be an amazing turnaround in McElwain's first year after four disastrous years under Will Muschamp. Derek Mason's job security is precarious right now. For him to get another year at Vanderbilt, he's might need to make some changes on his coaching staff. Maybe not. Not sure if that would  be enough if the Dores lose out the rest of the way in embarrassing fashion. At Florida, Kentucky and A&M at home, and then at Tennessee doesn't look great with this less than stellar offense. If he gets another year, he'll need to reassess his coaching staff, besides his offensive coordinator and strength coach. Those two seem like good coaches on this staff. Maybe the safeties coach, too. Graduate assistant for defense Chris Marve, who played very well at linebacker for VU three years ago, is doing a very good job. Talk about dysfunctional, this Georgia team under Mark Richt is at the pinnacle of dysfunction. Richt is coaching for his job the rest of the season after the debacle in Jacksonville against Florida last Saturday. His starting quarterback situation is game to game. It'll either be Greyson Lambert or Brice Ramsey this Saturday after Faton Bauta threw four picks against Florida last Saturday. Neither one looks like a great option. Clemson is playing great offensive football right now, but I'm not sure their defense is national championship caliber.  They've got a great team though. Jimbo Fisher has to make a decision whether he'll start Everett Golson or Sean McGuire. Golson suffered a concussion two weeks ago and was out last week, and McGuire completed 23-of-35 passes for 348 and three TDs with no interceptions in his place against Syracuse. But Syracuse and Clemson are on totally different levels. Golson does give the Noles the better run option. So Fisher may go with Golson though McGuire does give the Noles the better downfield passing game. But it'll be too much of quarterback DeShaun Watson and running back Wayne Gallman of the Tigers as they take care of business in Death Valley and move on in their playoff journey. Should be a  pretty stellar game though. This could be more of a defensive game as the weather looks questionable with t-storms around game time.

This should be an awesome offensive football game. TCU is getting healthier on defense, and with Trevone Boykin and Joch Doctson and an improving defense, TCU keeps their playoff hopes alive by surviving in Stillwater in an electric offensive shootout.

Urb's running another dysfunctional team like he did in the past at Florida–see Aaron Hernandez. J.T. Barrett is suspended this Saturday for a DUI or whatever the hell the call it in Ohio, and Cardale Jones takes over again at quarterback.  This seems a lot like Florida State dysfunction last year. They may have enough to make it to the playoff, but with the way this soap opera is unfolding, they very well may implode against either Michigan State at home or at the Big House, Michigan,  at the end of the season.

Week 9 previews, predictions

Johnathan Ford and the AU secondary will have the tall task of stopping the Ole Miss aerial attack Auburn welcomes the Ole Miss Rebels to Jordan-Hare Stadium for an 11 AM CT/ Noon ET kickoff on ESPN. Auburn is aiming to get a signature win to re-energize their season. The Rebels get Robert Nkemdiche back from a head injury he suffered two weeks ago carrying the ball on offense against Memphis. That's very good for them. Carl Lawson has started practicing with the Tigers this week and could possibly play. Gus is not letting on what he will do with Lawson. Will have more below. The cocktail hour starts at 3:30 PM ET/2:30 PM CT as the Dawgs and the Gators square off in what should be a really good football game. Both teams need this one badly for their respective SEC East title aspirations.

The Crimson Tide is off after overcoming a hard fought Tennessee effort, as the Tide pulled it out 19-14 behind the passing of Jacob Coker, the pass receiving of Ardarius Stewart and Calvin Ridley, and the running of the awesome Derrick Henry. It was a solid, hard fought victory for the Tide as they finally get a week off after eight straight games and prepare to take on LSU next Saturday night at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on CBS. Should be an epic.

Here's a look at my playoff predictions. The committee will release their first set of rankings next Tuesday, November 3rd, @ 6 PM CT/7 PM ET on ESPN. Should be fun. Here's how I see it heading into week 9.

1. Alabama

Still really like this Crimson Tide team because they have it all. The defense is impenetrable particularly against the run, and the secondary is terrific also right now. Jake Coker is doing a very good job completing 64% of his passes (121-of-213) for 1,623 yards and 11 TDs. He also has thrown seven ints, but he's been better lately. Henry is having an All-American, Heisman-like season rushing for 1,044 yards and 14 TDs. Leonard Fournette is the only player ahead of him in the conference at 1,352 yards and 15 TDs, and Fournette is leading the country in rushing and rushing touchdowns. Derrick is fifth nationally in rushing yards and tied for third nationally in rushing TDs. The receivers are playing good football. Special teams is getting better. I expect Cyrus Jones to take one to the house before the season is over.  This team, to me, is the most complete team in the country. Tennessee is a good football team despite their 3-4 record. They beat Georgia at home and took Florida to the brink in the Swamp. They'll probably finish strong and it's always an intense rivalry game, so I still like the Tide at the top this week. Next week will tell us a lot against Leonard Fournette and the Bengal Tigers of LSU. Mississippi State and Auburn on the road are not easy either.

2. Ohio State

Urb finally figured out that J.T. Barrett is his best option at quarterback and that was a good decision. The Buckeyes are loaded with talent, though kind of doing a similar act to what Florida State did last year; playing a pretty easy schedule and getting by. Maybe not as close as FSU's games were last year, but some of them have been very close. Still have to play Michigan State at home, November 21st, and go to the Big House, Nov. 28th, to face Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines, so they have their work cut out for them. Michigan State seems to keep getting stronger by the week, so they'll be a challenge. Not sure where Michigan's heads are right now after the debacle two weeks ago against Michigan State. We'll see if Harbaugh can straighten them out going forward. So the Buckeyes have work to do, just like everybody else.

3. Clemson

Dabo Swinney has a really fine football team, one that can definitely contend for the national championship. The Tigers of Clemson crushed Miami last Saturday, 58-0, and cost Al Golden his job. They do have to go to NC State this Saturday in what could be a dangerous game for them as FSU comes to Death Valley a week from Saturday, Nov. 7th. So the Tigers better be ready this Saturday. NC State is a pretty good football team at 5-2, so Clemson will have to play well to win. Right now though, they are definitely a playoff team.

4. LSU

Leonard Fournette has run wild this season running for 1,352 yards on 176 carries for a 7.7 yards per carry average and 15 TDs. Pretty awesome stuff. Quarterback Brandon Harris threw three touchdowns last week and has a stellar receiving corps working with him. Travin Dural (24-426,2 TDs), and Malachi Dupre (21-397, 5 TDs) are as good as it gets in college football. LSU's defense is good, but not sure it's great like Alabama's. We'll find out how great Fournette and the Bengal Tigers are when they head to Tuscaloosa next Saturday Night, November 7th.

Other teams receiving votes

5. Stanford

Playing power football and have a running back in Christian McCaffrey who is one of the best in the country. Quarterback Kevin Hogan is playing well and the defense is pretty lock down. Excellent football team. Do have a tough one at Washington State this Saturday. Mike Leach and the Cougars have beaten Oregon at Oregon, 45-38, and won last week at Arizona, 45-42. Leach's team is 5-2 and will pose a big challenge for the Stanford defense.

6. Baylor

Art Briles and his Bears lost starting quarterback Seth Russell for the season to a broken bone in his neck. That's serious. True freshman Jarrett Stidham takes over. He was the top quarterback prospect in the country by 247 sports in 2015 and he's completed 24-of-28 passes for 331 yards and six TDs against no interceptions in limited play. So Baylor might be OK. They still have running back Shock Linwood, who has rushed for 974 yards and nine TDs, and super wide receiver Corey Coleman who has caught 47 passes for 962 yards and 18 TDs. Wow. Their defense is better, so they've still got a shot. The Bears are off this Saturday before playing Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas (the Little Apple) next Thursday night, November 5th,  at 6:30 CT/7:30 ET on Fox Sports 1.

7. Michigan State

Just keep getting it done. They'll have to go to Ohio State so that could very well determine whether they make the Big Ten Championship game. But you gotta respect these guys and especially Coach Mark Dantonio. He does a super job in East Lansing.

8. TCU

Still getting it done, too. Trevone Boykin is a stellar player at quarterback and Josh Doctson is an awesome receiver. Have weapons all over the place on offense. Playing better defense. Certainly will be right there and will have Baylor coming to Fort Worth on Nov. 27th at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on ESPN. That could be a colossal one in the national picture.

For Auburn to win, they'll really have to both run it and pass it well. The Ole Miss front seven is tough and with Nkemdiche back they're even more stout. AU will have to play better defense. Laquon Treadwell and the receiving corps for Ole Miss is superb, so the secondary of the Tigers will be tested. Auburn played a courageous game last week against Arkansas, but just couldn't get the stop when they needed it. Sean White is really emerging as an excellent quarterback, and running back Peyton Barber has been stellar while stellar freshman running back Kerryon Johnson looks like he's going to be a stud. Would love to see the Tigers pull it off, but I don't see it happening. Should be a really good football game though.

The Dores got their first SEC victory under Derek Mason last week over Missouri, 10-3, and it was huge for both Coach Mason and the team. Their defense will keep them in this, but Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr. is a tough one to stop. He's completed 132-of-185 passes (71.4 %) for 1,733 yards, 10 TDs and just two ints. He's also rushed for 677 yards and 15 TDs. He's a stud. But I see the Dores shutting him down somewhat. Vandy is still trying to get good  offense though  that can score more points, and I don't think they'll be able to score enough to beat the Cougars this Saturday. Some key SEC match ups in week 8; national slate

Minkah Fitzpatrick and the Tide secondary are doin' work The Alabama football team will be battling through a tragedy as former running back Altee Tenpenny lost his life two days ago in a single car, car accident in Glen Allan, Mississippi where he en route to his home town of Little Rock, Ark. It's tough on the players to lose a good friend. They're like family. They're doing something hard together and to lose a teammate, whom everybody on the team liked, is difficult to handle. Altee had some personal battles obviously and it's tough to see a young guy lose his life, but the team will have to block it out and bear down for 60 minutes against Tennessee and then they can get a day off or two to attend Tenpenny's funeral.

****Tenpenny's funeral is Saturday at 11 AM in Little Rock, so no Alabama players there.****

Auburn will be in Fayetteville to play the Arkansas Razorbacks for an 11 AM CT kickoff. That's an early one, and there are AM thunderstorms which could be over with  by game time. But it's an excellent matchup of two teams that can really run it and pass it pretty well. The Tigers will try to build on their momentum from a 30-27 victory over Kentucky in Lexington a week ago. Sean White played well and the running game did well. Should be a good battle.

My playoff rankings

1. Alabama

The Tide looks like the best team in the country. The Tide will be challenged by the Tennessee offense, which is pretty good. But their resounding 41-23 victory over A&M last Saturday in College Station proved to me that this is the best team in the country.

2. Ohio State

Played like people were expecting them to all season by blasting Penn State 38-10 last week at the Horseshoe in Columbus. J.T. Barrett looks like he's taken over at quarterback, but Urb seems to be worried about Cardale Jones' feelings for some reason, and keeps putting him in though Barrett is the better quarterback. Still, they're loaded. Have Rutgers this weekend, and close with Michigan State at home, Nov. 21st, and Michigan on the road, Nov. 28th.

3. Baylor

The Bears just keep piling up the points. They'll have their own track meet again this weekend when they play Iowa State at home. I keep saying this, but it's always the defense with Baylor. Are they good enough on defense to win it all? Still not convinced of that.

4. LSU

Leonard Fournette has rushed for 1,202 yards and 14 TDs. He's leading the country in rushing yards. He ran for a buck 80 against and two TDs in a 35-28 hard fought victory over the Florida Gators last Saturday Night. I want to see him run against the most lock down run defense in football, the Alabama Crimson Tide, which LSU will visit Saturday, Nov. 7th. I see LSU like I see Baylor. Do they play good enough defense to be able to win a national championship?  I'm not seeing it right now. Another question: Can Brandon Harris throw it well enough when the run is not working? I don't think Harris has answered that question yet. He's said he can, but I'm not a believer yet. He has the targets in wide receivers Malachi Dupree and Travin Dural, but Harris's accuracy is  questionable. But LSU has a good team undoubtedly. Defense and Harris remain their question marks though. We should find out who the Bengal Tigers really are when they visit Tuscaloosa. They will be tested defensively this weekend with the high scoring Western Kentucky Hilltoppers coming to Baton Rouge. Will be interesting to see how they fare on defense in this upcoming game.

Teams that are also right there:

5. Stanford

Playing extremely well right now. Christian McCaffrey is a stud running back, quarterback Kevin Hogan is playing well, and the defense is physical and opportunistic.

6. Clemson

Playing really well right now. The defense is good, and DeShaun Watson and the offense are clicking. Wayne Gallman is an outstanding running back.

7. TCU

No.'s 5, 6 and 7 are really interchangeable. TCU has been in some tight ones, but they're still playing very good offense. Their defense has been banged up, but they're getting it done nonetheless. Quarterback Trevone Boykin is good though he can have some issues with accuracy sometimes. Overall, he's an explosive dual threat QB. Josh Doctson is one of the best wide receivers in the country. Their defense will keep getting better and they will certainly be in the mix in November. They have to go to Oklahoma State November 7th, which is far from guaranteed, then they go to OU on November 21st, before finishing out the season in what should be a blockbuster against Baylor at home on Friday, Nov.27th at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on ESPN.

8. Utah

Still right there. The Utes have struggled the last couple of weeks, but keep getting it done. They're a fact0r. They do have to go to USC this Saturday though, so that's a major challenge.

9. Michigan State

A good football team, but not great. The Michigan punter, who is an Australian part time male model (are you kiddin me!), bobbled the snap at the end of the game and Michigan State scooped it up and ran it into the end zone for an improbable 27-23 victory on the final play of the game. Michigan should have won the game. I studied the game and Jim Harbaugh had 10 seconds left in the game and no alternative but to punt the ball. The model couldn't get it done. The Spartans are still undefeated at 7-0. They will have to go to Ohio State, November 21st, so that will tell us how good this team really is. Like Ohio State to burst Michigan State's bubble unless Urb keeps playing musical chairs with his quarterbacks and totally ruins the chemistry of his team.

Here's a look at this week's action.

This isn't a complete kick-in for the Tide with the players trying to get ready despite a tragedy which has affected some of the players. The UT offense is pretty good led by running back Jalen Hurd and quarterback Joshua Dobbs. But Alabama should be able to score some points on a shaky UT defense. The secondary, led by junior Eddie Jackson (two ints for TDs) and true freshman Minkah Fitzpatrick (int for TD and blocked punt for TD), is has jelled terrifically. They have now returned three interceptions for TDs. Like the Tide to get it done, get a week off, and then get ready to rumble with LSU.

Ole Miss has been reeling lately after a 38-10 loss at Florida three weeks ago and a 37-24 L at Memphis last Saturday. Star defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche is questionable for A&M with a possible concussion he suffered while running the ball in a short yardage power run. Hugh Freeze may want to rethink putting Nkemdiche on offense now. Stud left tackle Laremy Tunsil is back though after having to sit out due to an NCAA violation. That will really help the offense. And the Rebels still have a shot at the West with a game at Auburn next Saturday, Arkansas at home Nov.7th, LSU at home Nov. 21st, and at Mississippi State on Nov. 28th. But at the same time, that's tough and this is going to be a tough game Saturday. A&M is explosive despite the fact that Alabama really shut them down last Saturday. I like the Rebels to keep their SEC championship games hopes alive winning in an entertaining shootout on Saturday Night.

Week 7 promises to be electric

Cyrus Jones and the Alabama secondary will be on alert Saturday afternoon in College Station

Expecting Jeremy Johnson to get the start for the Tigers Thursday Night at Commonwealth Stadium

Alabama @ A&M in a colossal SEC West tilt, Auburn @ Kentucky tomorrow night (Thursday) is a huge test for the Tigers and a much needed W for AU. Some key SEC matchups, and a massive national game along with some other important national games as the committee gets nearer to starting to pick the playoff rankings. The rankings commence Nov. 3rd, a Tuesday. Plenty of great action outside of the playoff banter as well.

Here are my four playoff teams right now:

1. Alabama

Got it done against a pretty scrappy Arkansas team last Saturday night at Bryant-Denny. Huge litmus test for the Tide this Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field versus the Aggies.

2. Michigan

I looked at the recruiting classes from 2011 to 2015 and Harbaugh has a stacked team with four stars and a couple of five stars on it. And is he ever coaching them up. Would love to see a Saban-Harbaugh matchup in the playoff.

3. Baylor

Just piling up the points. My question is the same one with Baylor every year: Can they play enough defense to win it all? They'll get tested in the Big 12 down the road especially at TCU to finish off the season.

4. Clemson

I like the way Dabo has this team playing. Playing excellent defense and quarterback DeShawn Watson, running back Wayne Gallman and the offense is clicking effectively. Pretty solid on defense and offense.

Ohio State is not in there because, well, they've got to play Penn State this weekend, which is no gimme, and then Michigan State will come to Columbus on Nov. 21st. Then the Buckeyes go to the Big House to play Harbaugh and the Wolverines on Nov. 28th. There's going to be a stumble in there. I like Michigan to knock them off if Michigan stays healthy. I'm not sure about Michigan State yet, but that could be an Urb L too. Penn State this weekend will be interesting. The Buckeyes aren't playing that well, really, so they're highly vulnerable.

TCU is definitely still in the discussion as is A&M. You can't count out FSU either. Clemson plays Florida State on Nov.7th at Death Valley, and that looks to be an elimination game. They will both very likely be undefeated when they meet up, though Clemson has to go to Miami and NC State prior to that, while FSU has a tougher road playing Louisville at home this weekend, then going to Georgia Tech next weekend, then Syracuse at home before Clemson.

Alabama and A&M may very well be playing an elimination game this weekend. If Alabama loses, it's not totally over for them, but it'll be really difficult to make it in with two losses let alone make it to the SEC Championship game. Ole Miss is still in it with one loss, and LSU is rolling with Fournette, though they haven't played much of a schedule so far. They have Florida coming into Death Valley this Saturday and if Florida had starting quarterback Will Grier, they'd have a good shot. But he's gone for the year with a performance enhancer violation, and they'll start their second string guy, Treon Harris. Harris could be OK, but it's going to be tough for the Gators in Baton Rouge on Saturday Night.

So there's plenty to be decided starting this weekend. Here's the rundown.

Last week: 13-3; Overall 85-22 (78%)

Line: Crimson Tide by 4 1/2

Alabama has shown a propensity to step it up in the big games throughout its history, going back to Bear Bryant and all the way up to today. They have really stepped it up especially under the Bear and S. A&M has a strong passing game with quarterback Kyle Allen and a group of stellar receivers led by super freshman Christian Kirk. The Tide secondary, which is vastly improved but still somewhat of a question mark, will once again be under the gun. It's next to impossible to run it on the Tide front seven, so A&M will have to win it through the air. I think they'll score points through the air. But their defense is still not where it needs to be to beat an elite team like Alabama. Like the Tide to get it done, but in pretty much a shootout.

Looks like Gus is not going to announce his starting quarterback against Kentucky until game time, but I'm going with Jeremy Johnson. Whether it's Jeremy or Sean White, they need to be good game managers. Auburn will be able to run the ball on Kentucky with Peyton Barber, Roc Thomas and Kerryon Johnson leading the way to an AU victory.

Leonard Fournette may have a little more trouble with a pretty stout Gator defense. It's too bad McElwain doesn't have his starting quarterback. That would really give the Gators a chance. But Treon Harris, the backup, is an excellent athlete, and Kelvin Taylor is a very good running back. McElwain will have to be creative in his play calls to give Harris the best chance to succeed. Probably more roll outs, quarterback zone read options, maybe even some trick plays with end arounds and flea flickers and wide receiver passes. McElwain will have a good plan. This is going to be a better game than some people think. Florida will be very competitive, but LSU is tough in Death Valley on a Saturday night.

Losing Nick Chubb to a knee injury was a major blow, but Sony Michel is very good as well and Keith Marshall can is reliable at backup rb. I thought quarterback Greyson Lambert played a really good game against Tennessee last week and the game should have gone into overtime if Georgia wide receiver Reggie Davis had caught a bomb from Lambert in the fourth quarter at the three yard line. He was going to be walking into the end zone for seven. But Davis dropped it and the Dawgs lost at tough one at Knoxville, 38-31. But they're still in it in the East, and Missouri is playing freshman quarterback Drew Lock, who is going to be good, but it'll be tough for him in Athens.

The big news is about Ball Coach this week in Gamecock country. While he deserves the right to retire when he wants to, doing it in the middle of the season is a bit cowardly. It puts his team in a bad position. But I've heard interim head coach Shawn Elliott talk this week and I'm impressed. When he started yesterday, SC got a four-star offensive lineman commit. That's a good start. SC still has some weapons on offense led by the awesome Pharaoh Cooper. They're struggling at quarterback with Perry Orth and Lorenzo Nunez splitting reps but there is a chance that Connor Mitch will be back. Vanderbilt is trying to find an offense. Derek Mason has done a good job with the defense, making it SEC caliber. But they don't have a consistent offense. Quarterback Johnny McCrary still throws too many interceptions and there's just no consistency to this offense. Vandy's defense will keep them in the game, but I like SC to win in a competitive but somewhat ugly game.

***Spurrier will be at ESPN Gameday on Saturday. Low classed to leave your team during the middle of the season, during what was a tremendous tragedy with the floods in South Carolina, and then going on Gameday when your former team has a huge game and their busting their backsides to salvage their season. I've lost all respect I had for Spurrier. Coward.

It's a  huge game in the Big Ten and nationally. Playoff implications are riding on this one, though there is a lot of football left to be played. Michigan State has won six of the last seven, and while Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan players are keeping it low key to the media about that, you know they really want this. Like Harbaugh and his team to get the job done and advance in the playoff race. Junior De'Veon Smith is a heckuva running back for the Wolverines. I expect him to eclipse a buck on Saturday. It'll be a very competitive game as the Spartans are a good, hard-nosed football team under stellar coach Mark Dantonio. But Michigan looks really good right now.

The Legacy of the Ball Coach

What a career Steve Spurrier probably doesn't remember talking to me, but I remember interviewing him vividly. In 1988, at 26 years old, I left Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where I was a sports reporter for a local radio station and a writer for Bama Magazine, to take a job writing sports for a publication titled Carolina Blue. It was kind of a suck up publication for University of North Carolina football, basketball and the other sports, but it was owned by then media powerhouse Jefferson-Pilot out of Charlotte, so it was a pretty good gig. I wrote 8-10 feature stories a week along with game stories on football and basketball games. It was pretty intense work. I was getting in at 7:15 in the morning and working till whenever I got done. Sometimes it was 5:30 PM and I got in some basketball pickup games after that. Other times it was 7:30 or 8 PM, and sometimes midnight. My editor's name was John Kilgo, and his nickname was "Killer." It was appropriate. He was a killer on young writers. There were three of us, two guys from East Carolina, and me, and we wrote away and got lambasted on a weekly basis on our reporting and our writing. Misspelled names would really get you taken to the woodshed verbally. But it was unbelievably great experience. My first story that I wrote for the publication was on North Carolina football center Jeff Garnica. He was an All-ACC player and selected by the AP as an All-American in '88. He was also very bright. I wanted to do a really good job with the piece after interviewing him for an hour because he was a great guy and I just wanted to start off with a bang. I started writing at 4 PM that afternoon and didn't get done until midnight. These stories were long, somewhere around 2,000 words, which are lengthy, but it's a story I could write now in an hour, look it over, and have it out in an hour and 15 minutes. But I was new to it.

Anyway, there were some really fun interviews. Coach Pat Dye at Auburn, Coach K at Duke, Lute Olsen at Arizona, of course Mack Brown, who had just started at Carolina and really did a heckuva job there before getting the Texas job in 2000. He took Carolina to multiple bowl games in the 90's, but in 1988, he was really rebuilding that program and didn't win a game his first year. I got to talk to Dean Smith all the time which was pretty awesome. I actually worked in the Smith Center, which was better known as the Dean Dome then and today. It was really an incredible experience as far as the coaches I got to talk to. Steve Spurrier was in his early 40's and had taken the Duke job in 1987. I called his office to do a preview of the upcoming 1989 Duke-Carolina game on a Tuesday about 5:30 PM Eastern Time. The next morning I got in the office at 7:15 and I had a message on the answering machine. "David, this is Steve Spurrier, hope you're doing great! Would love to talk to you about our upcoming game with the Heels. Give me a call when you get a chance." He talked to me like I was a good friend of his and he had no idea who I was. He knew he was going to beat Carolina most likely, but more than that, he LOVED the media. It was really refreshing to a coach who really wanted to talk to you. A lot of the great ones do like talking to the media. I had a great interview with Ball Coach, he was awesome. He, of course, beat Carolina that year. In 1989, he beat Danny Ford and Clemson, which was a perennial top 10 team and almost unbeatable team in the ACC, and Ford, a Bear Bryant disciple, won the national championship at Clemson in 1980. He was very similar to Coach Dye in that he played hard-nosed, physical football with an excellent running game and defense, and a solid passing game. His teams would just wear opponents out with their toughness and tenacity, much like Coach Saban's  do today and Coach Jim Harbaugh's Michigan teams are starting to do. But Spurrier beat him in 1989 in a major upset and Duke went on to tie for the ACC title and play in the All-American Bowl in B'ham that year. That's when Florida came calling to get their former Heisman Trophy winner back home to Gainesville and revive a struggling program. It was 1990 and I had taken a job at a daily newspaper, The Durham Morning-Herald, and was having a blast covering high school and college football and basketball for the paper. My sports editor, Ron Morris, and I got tips that Ball Coach was talking to Florida, so we found out when his plane was getting back to the Raleigh-Durham airport from Gainesville. We greeted him when he got back that night trying to get the scoop. He said to Ron, "Hey Mo-Mo," and kept calling him "Mo Mo." It was hysterical. He was so much fun, but had a way of telling you a lot and making it an awesome interview without telling you exactly what he was going to do. We finally got the word that Ball Coach was going to Florida. It was the right move for him. He was ready to go to the SEC, where he won a Heisman Trophy, and play in the big leagues and attempt to win SEC titles and national titles.

Well he did pretty well in Gainesville I'd say. Six SEC titles and one national championship in 1996. He had a dominant program. In 2000, he wanted to try something else; he wanted to try the NFL. It didn't work out with the Washington Redskins. Sometimes great college coaches can't make the transition to the NFL because they are used to telling their players what to do and the players will follow orders. The great college coaches have total control. People like Spurrier and Coach Saban probably didn't like the fact that some of the NFL players with the bigger salaries wouldn't listen to them. It had to be frustrating for Spurrier and S. The same happened in basketball with Calipari and Pitino. Both incredible college coaches who couldn't make the transition to the NBA because their disciplined styles didn't work with some of the players, who wanted to run the show. It's a real fine line in the NFL and the NBA. You've got to be able to mix discipline with being a players' coach to an extent. And while Spurrier's and Saban's players in college have liked them and respected them for the most part, their hard nose, particularly Saban's, approach for some reason didn't connect with guys who were more into their paychecks than being great football players. But Spurrier and S's styles  have been phenomenal in college.

Ball Coach took the job at South Carolina in 2005 and had three consecutive 10 win seasons from 2010-12 winning 11 games in 2012. I remember the 2013 Outback Bowl victory for South Carolina, a 31-28 victory over Michigan, because Jadeveon Clowney had one of the most massive hits on a Michigan running back that I'd ever seen. It was a tremendous football play. The Michigan player was really shaken up, but it was legal. I guess it'd be legal today. Not sure, but it was just an awesome football play. Fortunately, the Michigan player didn't suffer a serious head injury, and it was a totally legal hit. But Ball Coach was bringing in Mr. Football after Mr Football in South Carolina with the great Marcus Lattimore, like Clowney, another stud before he suffered those tough knee injuries. But Lattimore was an awesome running back for South Carolina in the two years he played and could very well have won the Heisman Trophy and been a first round pick in the NFL, maybe the top player selected, if he hadn't sustained those devastating knee injuries. Clowney was the first player selected in the 2014 draft by the Houston Texans and is battling through some injuries, but could dominate if he puts his mind to it. Alshon Jeffery was another Mr. Football, who pretty much beat Alabama singlehandedly in 2010. Jeffery is now a star wide receiver with the Chicago Bears in the National Football League though he's banged up a little now. But he was a great one at South Carolina, too.

Ball Coach had run into some  tough times these last two years, and he was  just tired of the losing and just tired period. It's a tough predicament for South Carolina the rest of this season. Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott will take over. But Ball Coach deserved the right to decide when he was done. He's 70 years old, an age when men aren't having to work as hard and should enjoy life some more, so he's definitely earned the right to say when he's done. He didn't think he could turn it around this year and the future wasn't as promising as he'd hoped, recruiting was going OK but not great, so he was ready to call it a career. He has a lifetime membership at Augusta National, which he will certainly take advantage of. He loves to play golf and is a good golfer. He has a house in Florida which he will use a lot. He's got all the financial resources he needs, and he really loves his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He deserves a good final chapter in his life. With as good a shape as he's in, that could be another 20 to 25 years. He's 70 going on 50. He loves life.

Would he ever take another job? I highly doubt it. USC, the other USC, Southern Cal, will have an opening, but I think the Ball Coach likes the South, wants to be close to his family and really likes the membership at Augusta and playing golf, so he's ready to focus on that. He's been a scratch golfer and is still a very good player.

I have no idea whom South Carolina will hire. No clue. I guess Kirby Smart's name might come up. Jeremy Pruitt. Chad Morris. Guys like that. Should be interesting how that develops.

But Coach Spurrier has a lot of livin to do as the song goes. I hope he really enjoys life now. He's earned it.

Week 6: Crimson Tide-Hogs, AU thoughts, SEC, national blockbusters

Derrick Henry is a major reason the Tide is rolling My four playoff teams at this point are in order:

1. Alabama

Looked like the best team in the country last week as they blasted Georgia in Athens, 38-10. Have an SEC gauntlet coming up though, with Arkansas at home, Texas A&M on the road next Saturday, Oct. 17th, 2:30 PM CT on CBS in a huge showdown, Tennessee at home, Oct. 24th, a week off Oct. 31, and then LSU visits Bryant-Denny on November 7th. So the Tide has a load in front of them. I definitely like them against Arkansas and UT, A&M and LSU are trickier, but certainly doable.

2. Baylor

Averaging 63.8 points per game. Giving up 26, so they're playing better defense. Defense is always the question mark at Baylor, but man can they play some offense. Could come down to @ TCU on November 27th which could determine if they're in. At Oklahoma State November 21st is no guarantee either.

3. Ohio State

Can't keep them out though they're just kind of getting by right now. The talent is through the roof though. Roadblocks are Michigan State at home on November 21st, and at the Big House to visit Jim Harbaugh and Michigan on November 28th. That's looking to be a classic.

4. Utah

This is a tough, hard-nosed, outstanding football team.  They run it well, they pass it well, they're tough in the trenches, and they play SEC like defense, I'm talking Alabama-like defense. They face a 5-0 Cal team at home and that's no kick in, they're at USC, Oct. 24th, and UCLA visits the Utes on Nov. 21st. Things are setting up pretty well for this team and they are legit. Beat Oregon 62-20 at Autzen Stadium, and while Oregon is struggling somewhat, they're really good at home and they still have playmakers galore. So that was a serious woodshed victory.

Other teams in contention for a playoff spot at this point are TCU, Clemson, Michigan State, Michigan, Florida State and Northwestern. Northwestern at Michigan Saturday. Stanford is starting to enforce their will on people and are looking pretty tough. Northwestern beat them 16-6 in the season opener for both teams, so that tells me a lot about Northwestern.  I've got Michigan in there. Harbaugh has instilled toughness and discipline back into this storied program. He has them back a year or two sooner than most people thought he would. He's got pretty good talent and is really coaching them up.

Here's a look at this week's lineup.

Last week: 15-5; Overall 75-22 (77%)

Arkansas (2-3, 1-1 SEC) @ No.8 Alabama (4-1, 1-1)

Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa (101, 821)

6 PM CT/7 PM ET

ESPN

Line: Bama by 16 1/2

The defense is as good as any Nick Saban and Kirby Smart have had in Tuscaloosa. The front seven is close to impossible to run on, and the secondary showed how talented they were last week with three interceptions of Georgia passes. Eddie Jackson had one he returned 50 yards, Ronnie Harrison had one he returned 29 yards, and Marlon Humphrey made a really good int as he was falling down backwards. Reggie Ragland is playing lights out and is the leader of the defense. They're dominant. Derrick Henry is piling up the yards on the ground. He ran for 148 yards and a 30 yard seven to open up the touchdown barrage by the Crimson Tide. That run put Bama in front 10-3, and Jake Coker, Cavin Ridley and Minkah Fitzpatrick took it from there. Fitzpatrick blocked a Georgia punt and took it in from a yard to put the Tide up 17-3, then Coker connected with the electric Ridley for a 45 yard touchdown that put the game basically away, 24-3, late in the second quarter.

Henry has now rushed for 570 yards on 93 carries (6.1 per)  and has nine TDs. He is tied for seventh in the country in touchdowns and 19th in rushing yards. Boise State running back Jeremy McNichols leads the country with 12 TDs and Leonard Fournette leads the country in rushing yards with 864. Fournette is second in the country with 11 TDs. Henry is an awesome North-South runner, which S loves, and all the other coaches who like power football. Harbaugh and Utah's Kyle Whittingham are two of them. They want that kind of runner. He's not super at creating yards, he needs holes, but he's certainly doin work for the Crimson Tide this season. Jake Coker played terrifically last week in the rain in Athens. He was 11-of-16 for 190 yards and a TD, and played a flawless game. He's got it together. He and Kiff are definitely on the same page right now. Kenyan Drake is still an explosive play waiting to happen as is Ridley. Alabama needs to keep developing its other skilled players, and getting O.J. Howard involved in the offense should be a priority. Howard is an excellent tight end and Kiffin needs to get him the ball more. He could be an excellent weapon.

Arkansas had a tremendous win at Tennessee last Saturday night, 24-20, and really should have beaten A&M the week before in Arlington, Texas, losing to the Aggies. 28-21. They really outplayed A&M in that game and should have come away with the W. But they're 2-3 and 1-1 in the conference, they have a massive offensive line, an outstanding running game, and a pretty good passing offense. Their secondary is somewhat questionable, but they've got some talent on defense. Alex Collins, who was a four star recruit out of high school in Florida three years ago, has been terrific running the football. He has gained 656 yards this season on 113 carries (5.8 per) with six TDs. He's averaging 131 yards per game. He's eighth in the country in rushing yards. Freshman Rawleigh Williams has done an excellent job taking the place of Jonathan Williams, the stud tailback for Arkansas, along with Collins, who was lost for the season with a knee injury he sustained in fall camp. Williams is good. He has rushed for 226 yards on 47 totes (4.8) and has a seven. He's going to be a hoss for them these next three or four years. He already is. Quarterback Brandon Allen is a senior who has paid his dues the last three years. He's completed 93-of-141 passes (66%) for 1,360 yards and 8 TDs this season. He has thrown three interceptions. So Arkansas will test the Bama secondary and they will for sure try to figure out ways to move the ball on the ground. Their leading receiver is wide out Drew Morgan who has 23 receptions for 413 yards and three scores. Tight end Hunter Henry is a big part of Bret Bielema's offense. The 6'5", 253 pound junior has 20 catches for 268 yards and a seven. Their leading tackler is cornerback Rohan Gaines, who has 26 stops. Sophomore safety Henre' Tolliver is second on the team in tackles with 24 and 4 for a loss of 14 yards. That's not a great sign when two guys in your secondary are leading the team in tackling. The front seven looks vulnerable to Henry and the running game.

With all that said, I like the Tide to win for sure. Could be a tougher game because the team is coming off an emotional victory at Athens last week, and Arkansas is a pretty good football team. But they'll get the job done.

Alabama 35, Arkansas 17

Thoughts on Auburn

Gus just kicked Duke Williams off the team. Williams is a loser right now and needs to get his act together if he wants to have any kind of future, whether it'll be in the NFL, which he wants, or in a coaching capacity or whatever he would be forced to do if football doesn't work out. And he better get it together quickly. He was a disaster to this football team.

I watched the Tigers defeat San Jose State 35-21 and was very impressed with the running game. Peyton Barber is not the most talented running back on the depth chart, but right now he's the best. He ran for 147 yards and five TDs last week. He's playing sensational football right now for the Tigers. Roc Thomas looks like he's getting it together and freshman Kerryon Johnson looks like he's going to be really good and be an explosive playmaker like Roc. Sean White only completed six-of 10 passes for 108 yards, but had a nice 42-yard deep ball to Ricardo Louis. The quarterback competition is open now as White and Jeremy Johnson will battle for QB1 against Kentucky next Thursday, October 15th, at 6 PM on ESPN. Will keep an eye on that as the competition proceeds this weekend. I imagine Gus and Rhett Lashlee will have made their decision by Sunday night. The defense played better against San Jose State. San Jose State had an outstanding running back in Tyler Ervin, who had rushed for 300 yards the week before against Fresno State. He ran for a buck 60 against the Tigers on 27 carries, but the Tigers seemed to make it a little harder on him in the second half. Will Muschamp has Cassanova McKinzy playing defensive end now and that helps with the pass rush. Johnathan Ford led the Tigers with 14 tackles and linebacker Kris Frost added 12. There were four tackles for loss and two interceptions, one by Justin Garrett and another by true freshman Carlton Davis, who made an excellent reaction on a tipped ball by the San Jose receiver. Davis was falling forward to the ground and caught it. Great play. Cornerback Jonathan Jones and defensive tackle Dontavius Russell had fumble recoveries. And there were a couple of stellar kickoff returns. Johnathan Ford took a kick back 58 yards and Blake Countiss reeled off a 61 yard kickoff return. So there were a lot of positives to build on for the Tigers.

Kentucky will be a tough road test and the Tigers have to have  this one to turn this season around. They have to be able to run the football and they really need good quarterback play. They lost a receiver, though Williams wasn't doing much, so they need Ricardo Louis, Marcus Davis and some others to step up. Louis needs to be the leader. He's a playmaker. Kentucky will test the Tigers. This is a must win if Auburn wants to get their season going again. AU is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference with losses to Mississippi State, 17-3, and LSU, 45-21. Kentucky is 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC with wins over Missouri at home, 21-13, and South Carolina on the road, 26-22. They have lost to Florida at home, 14-9. They've got a pretty decent quarterback, Patrick Towles, and good running backs in Stanley "Boom" Williams, and JoJo Kemp. Their offense is pretty solid, though if you get good pressure on Towles, he can be inaccurate and make mistakes. Their defense is improved but the Tigers can probably run it pretty well on them. AU will have to pass it effectively, too, to loosen up the defense so they can run the ball. Will have more next Thursday on AU-Kentucky.

Derrick Henry (above) and Nick Chubb in a classic SEC battle in Athens Saturday

Nick Chubb

Huge one for the Crimson Tide and the Dawgs between the hedges. Auburn tries to re-group and find a quarterback who can lead them to at least one victory. There are some pretty big tilts in the SEC and a huge national game at Death Valley, the Death Valley in South Carolina, and all the big names in college football are in action this Saturday. Here's a look at what to expect.

There's a hurricane in the Atlantic right now, Joaquin, and it could be pretty dangerous for some on the east coast, but most hopefully not. But it's going to bring some rain nonetheless to the southeast, and Athens has an 80% chance of showers and 10 MPH winds, and the wind will be a somewhat of a factor. But the wet ball will really have an impact on the game, unless the hurricane turns up north in the Atlantic. It's hard to predict the weather two days in advance, but the forecast calls for rain in Athens, so going to base it on that. Taking care of the football is going to be at a premium in this game. Alabama will have to take care of the ball as well as they can. Jake Coker and the running backs, Derrick Henry, Kenyan Drake and there's a chance Bo Scarborough will play, will all need to take care of the football. Damien Harris too if he gets a shot. Scarbrough, the five star in the 2014 class who was ineligible to play academically the first four games and suffered a knee injury in the spring that he has come back from, could play a role, but it'll be his first game back and first as a college football player, so his impact in this game could be minimal. But Henry and Drake will get the majority of the snaps and they need to run well, move the chains,  get in the end zone and not fumble  for the Crimson Tide to win this game.

On the other side, Greyson Lambert has completed 77% of his passes, 52-of-68, for 733 yards, for seven TDs against zero interceptions. The Dawgs first priority on offense will be to get Nick Chubb and Sony Michel the ball. Chubb has been overshadowed by LSU's Leonard Fournette this season because Fournette has been running wild albeit against not very good defenses. But Chubb has been stellar again this year. He rushed for his 12th straight 100+ yard game last week against Southern, one behind Herschel Walker's mark of 13. He has rushed for 608 yards on 71 carries, 8.4 yards per carry, and six TDs. He averages 149.8 yards per game on the ground. His 12 consecutive 100 yard games ties him for the longest active streak of 100 yard rushing games with Toledo's Kareem Hunt. Michel is excellent as well, with 223 yards on 32 carries, 7.0,  and four TDs. This is a ground and pound team which can do some stuff in the air like Alabama. But it's about the ground game for both teams and both defenses are excellent and will be homed in on stopping the run.

The Alabama defense will severely test Georgia's ground game and load up the box and make Lambert, who hasn't played against a stellar defense this season, beat them through the air. Against a pretty good Vanderbilt defense, Lambert completed only 11 of 21 passes for 116 yards. It was a perfect day, so there were no excuses. And he'll really be challenged by Alabama's defense. The Tide's front seven is as good as there is in college football along with Ole Miss's. Alabama is going to try to make Lambert beat them and Georgia is going to try to shut down Henry, Drake, and Scarborough, if Scarbrough plays much of a role, and make Coker beat them through the air, too. Again, turnovers may very well decide this one. Who takes care of the ball better on what could be a very rainy night, will win this game. I like Alabama to get the job done in Athens in a defensive war.

This point spread seems about right. No weather issues in Gainesville on Saturday. Florida is 10 for 10 on fourth downs this season. That's incredible. Against Tennessee last week, they were down 27-14 with five minutes to go when quarterback Will Grier completed a 20 yard pass on fourth and eight to wide receiver Brandon Powell and the Gators cashed in to cut the lead to 27-21. After holding UT on downs, Florida got the ball back and on fourth and 14 from their own 47 yard line with 1:49 left, Grier connected with freshman wide receiver Antonio Callaway for 63 yards and the go ahead score. Callaway caught the ball just beyond the first down marker and spun to his left and turned on the jets down the sideline for the seven. The Vols missed a 55 yard field goal try at the end of the game and Florida won improbably 28-27 for their 11th consecutive victory over the Vols. Florida is the story of the SEC right now outside of Ole Miss. But I like the Rebels to clamp down on defense, get some turnovers and move on in the SEC west with this win over a pretty good SEC East opponent in the Gators. Should be a good game though.

I really, really like Dak Prescott. He's stayed for four years and paid his dues. Hopefully he'll get to the next level and do well there. He played an excellent game in State's victory at Auburn last week, and State has a good football team. They're playing tougher defense this year under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, who is in his first year back as coordinator after spending time at Texas and La. Tech. He was State's defensive coordinator in 2010, and he's a good coach. Dan Mullen gets a lot out of his offense. But this is at Kyle Field and A&M is explosive on offense, though not terrific on defense. I like this to be a really close game with A&M edging the Bulldogs out at the end. Look for A&M freshman Christian Kirk to have a big game. The freshman wide receiver is a rising star in the SEC and nationally, and almost beat Arkansas single handedly last Saturday.

South Carolina may have found a quarterback in freshman Lorenzo Nunez who completed 12 of 22 passes for 184 yards and a pair of 7's, and ran for 123 yards in the Gamecocks' 31-14 victory last week over Central Florida. He looks a lot like Blake Sims to me. He's good. The SC defense played very well also as linebacker T.J. Holloman intercepted two passes. Missouri suspended starting quarterback Maty Mauk for this game for disciplinary reasons. So the Tigers will go with highly rated four-star freshman Drew Lock. Lock was a 95 four-star by 247 sports and I watched his high school film and he's pretty talented, though his throwing mechanics aren't perfect. He played some against Kentucky last week and did OK in a Missouri loss at Kentucky. Mauk is an OK quarterback, so this could be an upgrade. But you can't replace experience at quarterback and Lock doesn't have it. Nunez doesn't have much more, but he looks more ready to me than Lock does right now. So I'm going to go with the Gamecocks to pull off the upset and get back on track for a better season than it looked like two weeks ago at Georgia. Good weather, sunny, 67, but the wind will be at 13 MPH, so Nunez's legs will be a major factor.

Death Valley will be rockin for this one. Notre Dame has battled through a lot of injuries on defense and played some good football this season. C.J. Prosise is an excellent running back having rushed for 600 yards on 74 carries for an 8.1 average, and six TDs. DeShone Kizer is a solid quarterback for the Irish. The freshman took the place of the injured Malik Zaire in the Virginia game and threw a touchdown in the final minute to help the Irish pull off a miracle victory over UVA. He's a good player. But I like running back Wayne Gallman, who has rushed for 310 yards and three touchdowns and is an excellent north-south runner, and quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has completed 74 percent of his passes, 58-of-78, for seven TDs against three ints, to get the job done at home in what looks like a rainy night in Clemson.

People (who study Vegas) are starting to like Mississippi State after Auburn's disappointing performance at Baton Rouge last weekend. Gus decided to make a change at quarterback going with Sean White, the redshirt freshman. Jeremy Johnson is a great kid and at some point may get it together, but wasn't getting the results his team needed. Sean is a former Under Armour All American MVP in 2013  at that elite high school camp where the best high school quarterbacks in the country compete. Along with that he was named the MVP of the Elite 11 high school quarterback camp in 2013, where the best 11 high school quarterbacks in the country compete. He was a four-star recruit and is very accurate from the reports I've read. But Auburn needs to get the ground game going, too, and the defense HAS to play better. I've heard that Carl Lawson is out for the year with a fractured hip and Joshua Holsey one of AU's starting corners/nickel back, is also out for the year. So Will Muschamp will have to find ways to slow Dak and the State offense down, and White will need to be a leader in the huddle and be accurate with his throws. And AU must get production from Peyton Barber, freshman Kerryon Johnson and if Roc Thomas or Jovon Robinson can play to really give the Tigers a ground game boost. Looks like Barber and Johnson are the go-to guys right now and they look pretty solid. Barber is tough between the tackles and has pretty good speed. Johnson can get on the edge and make house calls. He's going to be excellent. Roc Thomas, who I really like, is having trouble staying healthy. But he has a ton of talent. Robinson hast lived up to his five star reputation yet, but there is time to get going.  White's mobility is pretty good. He runs a 4.6 40. State is still a solid football team and almost knocked off LSU at home two weeks ago.So this is going to be a tough, physical football game. Auburn will have to run the football, have White make some plays in the passing game, and play much better on defense. I see the Tigers improving this week and getting it done at home, but in a hard fought SEC war.

I know last week was disappointing for Alabama fans, but the team did well to keep coming back was right there at the end. I was pretty impressed with the way Jake Coker competed. He made a couple of bad mistakes passing the ball, but he really fought as did the whole team. Would like to see Lane Kiffin give Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake more opportunities to run the ball. I'm sure S is feeling that way, too. With the Tide getting behind, I guess Kiffin felt he needed to move the ball through the air. This is still a high quality football team and there is a lot of season left. A much needed solid victory over La. Monroe will propel the Tide into Athens next Saturday with positive momentum. The secondary needs to keep improving. There are really good athletes back there, so there is plenty of potential. The offense needs to run the ball well and Coker needs to have a good game for a confidence builder. Would like to see the Tide use tight end O.J. Howard more in the passing game. Every time he touches the ball something good happens. The Tide needs to get Henry and Drake going and the defense needs a solid outing against a team which knocked off Arkansas in 2012 and the next week almost beat Auburn. They also upset Alabama in Saban's first year in 2007. But the Tide will be fine here as it prepares for a blockbuster next Saturday at Athens against them Dawgs at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS.

Florida suspended a couple of players yesterday,  backup quarterback Treon Harris and star cornerback Jalen Tabor, so that's an issue. I do like the Gators' starter, redshirt freshman Will Grier. He's a potentially a good SEC quarterback and he showed more signs of it last week in a huge Gators victory at Kentucky. Tennessee lost a tough one at home versus Oklahoma two weeks ago after leading of 17-0 in the second half losing to a good Oklahoma team in overtime, 31-24. The Vols are good on offense and are led by super running back Jalen Hurd and potentially excellent quarterback Josh Dobbs, but with the potential for some questionable weather conditions, I see this as a knockdown, drag out defensive, running game kind of battle where the team that takes care of the ball better will win. I'm liking what Jim McElwain is doing so far in Gainesville. He's a really good coach, and has brought some toughness to the Gators mentality. Tennessee can sure run it, but I like the Gators' defense better than the Vols and I believe in Grier and Coach McElwain.

The Rebs take care of business and get ready for a big trip to Gainesville next Saturday for a 6 or 6:30 PM CT start on either ESPN, the Deuce or the SEC Network. The Rebels play on the road at Florida, @ Auburn, @ State– to end the regular season, and play A&M, LSU and Arkansas at home. So they have a pretty navigable schedule if they can stay healthy. That's a big if and LSU and A&M will certainly be major challenges. I think the Gators next weekend could give them a challenge. And if Auburn can get it together, they could knock off the Rebels. But they're going to be  fine this week against a Vanderbilt team that is improving, but not good enough at Oxford.

Like the power running game led by Devonte Booker and the tough defense of the 11 1/2 point underdog Utes to pull off an improbable upset in Eugene. Not convinced the move to bring in Vernon Adams Jr. is going to work out that well for Oregon. Adams Jr lit it up at Eastern Washington last season, but had a chance to win the game at Michigan State two weeks ago and overthrew a wide open receiver from 35 yards out that would been the game winner in East Lansing and would have kept Oregon in the thick of things in the playoff hunt. Jeff Lockie, the backup quarterback now, had an awesome spring game, and Mark Helfrich should have stuck with him instead of taking a risk and kind of a punk move to bring in Adams from Eastern Washington as a transfer fifth year player and put Lockie, a hard working, redshirt junior  quarterback, on the bench. Lockie played last week as Adams was hurt and completed 23 of 31 passes for 228 yards and two TDs against Georgia State. That isn't a real formidable foe, but this guy has done great work every time I've seen him play. But Helfrich will probably stick with Adams Jr.  The Ducks have to win Saturday night, but I'm going to take the Utes, which are 3-0 and can really make a statement with a victory at Autzen Stadium.

Bama, AU in blockbusters in week 3, other key SEC, national games

Can Cyrus Jones (above)( and the Alabama secondary slow down LaQuon Treadwell (below)and the Ole Miss passing game? That's one of the main keys to the game

Laquon Treadwell

Should be epics in Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge this Saturday with the Tide hosting the strong Ole Miss Rebels under the lights at Bryant-Denny and the Tigers heading into Death Valley for an afternoon showdown with The Hat and LSU. The Dawgs and Gamecocks face off between the hedges and the Gators head to Lexington to play a resurgent Kentucky Wildcats team. Should all be classics. There is plenty of other SEC action and some key national match ups on the slate tonight, Friday and Saturday. Here's a look at the action with predictions.

Last week: 13-4; Overall: 32-6

No.15 Ole Miss (2-0) @ No.2 Alabama (2-0)

Ole Miss is 1-35-1 in the state of Alabama in its history. The Tide has definitely got the Rebels number at Bryant-Denny. But this is a much better Ole Miss team than the ones in the past. It's a better team than last year's and they were a pretty good football team in 2014. Ole Miss is clicking in every aspect of the game. The offense, led by quarterback Chad Kelly, the Clemson transfer, has put up 70+ points in each of the first two weeks against UT- Martin and Fresno State respectively. Ole Miss defeated UT Martin, 76-3, in week one and Fresno State, 73-21, last Saturday. While those teams aren't nearly in the class of what the Rebels will face this Saturday night, this team is a juggernaut offensively. And Robert Nkemdiche and the defense is physical, opportunistic and extremely fast on the perimeter. It is hard to run on the outside against this defense. Lane Kiffin is going to have to find a way for Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake to keep the chains moving on the ground. The Alabama quarterback situation was pretty tragic last Saturday versus Middle Tennessee. The Alabama defense is good, but the secondary can still a question mark.  Ole Miss's running game is fine, but Jaylon Walton is a small back and will have trouble getting through the front seven of Alabama. Jordan Wilkins is pretty good and a bigger back, but Ole Miss is going to have to get a lot done through the air a lot of the time. They'll have to run to keep the defense honest, but Kelly and his receivers will have to find ways to move the ball and get it in the end zone.  The question marks for Alabama are the quarterback play and the play of the secondary. Can Jake Coker or Cooper Bateman get the job done under center? It'll probably be Coker who starts, but if he struggles, Bateman could very well come out of the bullpen to relieve him. And can the defensive backs stop Kelly and superstar wideouts Laquon Treadwell and Cody Core. That's a major factor in this game. Alabama has the coaching pedigree advantage with quite a few of the coaches having won three national championships. But Ole Miss has a good staff, too. These are veteran coaches who know how to make the offense go and how to neutralize opposing offenses, for the most part. This is going to be quite a football game. I don't like Ole Miss's record in Bryant-Denny, or in the state of Alabama for that matter, so it looks like on paper the Tide will win at home. But right now, I think the Rebels have a better football team.

Auburn really struggled on both sides of the ball last week versus Jax State. winning 27-20 in overtime. They struggled on both sides of the ball in the second half versus Louisville in a 31-24 victory at the Georgia Dome in week one. Jeremy Johnson has thrown five interceptions to three touchdowns, and has not become the quarterback Auburn fans expected him to be before the season started. The defense is giving up an average of 421 yards of total offense per game through the first two games. Leonard Fournette is waiting to go off against the Tigers' defense. Gus and his crew are going to have to think of ways to get the ball in the end zone because LSU is going to ground and pound on the Tigers all afternoon and it will be hot, so the Auburn Tiger defense could wear down as the game moves on. LSU backup tailback Darrell Williams is pretty electric as well. I just don't see any way that the Auburn Tigers can pull this out the way Johnson and the defense are playing right now. Like the Bengal Tigers at home.

Nick Chubb pounded Vanderbilt for 189 yards last week. The week before he ran for 120 yards and two sevens against La. Monroe. The sophomore looks unstoppable. He is. It'll be too much Chubb for the South Carolin defense  to handle. And the Georgia defense is becoming elite under coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. The question mark for Georgia, like many other SEC teams, is quarterback. Can Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert throw the football when the Dawgs need to get something done in the air? He has the receivers. This could determine if the Dawgs have a really good season or an elite season. The Gamecocks will probably stack the box and make Lambert beat them. The Dawgs line is good though, and Chubb will get his yards and could very well take one or two to the house.  But Lambert may have to make some plays with his arm. I still think that the Dawgs ground game with Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall will carry the day for the Dawgs.

I'm not sure why Florida is favored in this game. They barely got by East Carolina at home, 24-17, and Kentucky went into Columbia last Saturday night and knocked off South Carolina, 26-22. I'm not buying the Gators yet and I'm pretty bullish on the Wildcats. The Wildcats running game with Boom Williams (24 carries, 245 yards, one TD, 10.1 yards per carry) and Jojo Kemp (16 carries, 112 yards, one TD, 7 yards per carry) will be too much for the Gators' defense to stop. Patrick Towles is a pretty good quarterback and the Wildcats' defense is much improved under Mark Stoops. Jim McElwain looks like he's got a pretty good quarterback in Will Grier, but he keeps trying to use two quarterbacks, putting in Treon Harris who can't throw a lick. Like where Kentucky is much more so than Florida.

This could be considered a reach by a lot of people, and it is somewhat, but I love the way quarterback Tanner Magnum has gone into Nebraska and won on a last second Hail Mary and beaten a solid Boise State team at home by 14 with a game winning TD pass in the last 45 seconds followed by a pick six by their safety. SEC Championship Game 2015

Alabama over Georgia

College Football Playoff teams:

Ohio State, Alabama, TCU and Oregon

Ohio State

Too much talent not to put them in there. The team is loaded and Urb can be annoying, but they're coached up well. The only thing that could cause them to stumble is complacency. Repeating is hard. But with running back Ezekiel Elliott and all the weapons on offense with whoever plays quarterback, Cardale Jones, who is battling some migraines right now or J.T. Barrett,  along with a pretty stout defense and a Big Ten schedule that looks very navigable, I like the Buckeyes to be there in January playing in the semifinals.

Alabama

While quarterback is somewhat unsettled, the defense is through the roof good and with the running game of Derrick Henry, Kenyon Drake and super talented five star freshman Damien Harris, the quarterback should be able to manage the game well and get the ball to the talented receiving corps led by Robert Foster and ArDarius Stewart. This defense has a chance to be the best in Nick Saban's nine years at Alabama. I watched Kirby Smart in an interview before the season and he looks charged up about this group. Just to give you an example of the talent this group has, Jonathan Allen was a five star recruit out of Virginia in 2o13 and I watched film on him in high school and he just destroyed opposing running backs and quarterbacks. He would actually lift them up and throw them to the turf. He's a beast. But he's second string behind massive A'Shawn Robinson. He'll play a lot and be an excellent player for the Tide at defensive end, but Robinson is a heckuva player as well. Just disruptive, game changing players who are difference makers up front. On the other side of the d line, De'Shawn Hand was a five star recruit in 2014 out of Virginia and he's third string behind Jarran Reed (the starter) and Dalvin Tomlinson. Reed is terrific. That shows how deep this defensive line is. Senior Darren Lake will be the nose guard and the Tide is three deep there with a couple of younger, talented players behind him in freshman Daron Payne and sophomore Josh Frazier. The four linebackers are superb in Dillon Lee, the awesome Reggie Ragland, the powerful and massively hard hitting Rueben Foster (who S wants to tackle better so he won't get another concussion), and the always reliable and steady Denzel Devall. The secondary is the area that needed to improve the most and they have. Cyrus Jones comes back as a senior at one corner and Marlon Humphrey, the redshirt freshman who was five star two years ago out of Hoover High School in Birmingham, has taken over at the other corner spot. Eddie Jackson will be the strong safety and Geno Smith is the free safety. There is plenty of talent behind the starters. Look for sophomore Tony Brown to play a lot at corner and freshman five star Minkah Fitzpatrick is a guy they're really high on.

It's just a matter of the quarterback playing solid and also playing well. Coker looks like the safe pick at QB, Cooper Bateman the most explosive, and Alec Morris a reliable, solid passer. I like Bateman's 4.5 speed and athletic ability. I liked when Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan went against the grain on Monday and picked Tyrod Taylor as his starter over the experienced E. J. Manuel. Taylor has been nothing short of spectacular in the preseason and Ryan didn't make the safe choice, but went with the guy who had the hottest hand in the preseason. That's the way I feel about Bateman over Coker and Morris. He's the most dynamic athlete, his accuracy has really improved, and he can make things happen with his wheels. He's the most like Blake Sims of the three and you need a mobile quarterback who can make things happen, a guy who can gain 10  to 12 yards on a scramble when receivers aren't open or the pocket breaks down. My choice is Bateman, but Coker may start against Whisky. Should be an interesting development during the game to see how S and Lane Kiffin use their quarterbacks. We could see all three against Whisky. S did this in 2011 with two quarterbacks, A.J. and Phillip Sims, until A.J. took over in the game against Penn State and took it from there leading the Crimson Tide to two straight national titles in 2011-12. So there is time to figure that out if that's what S and Kiffin choose to do. I think the Tide will be fine against Wisconsin, so the quarterback competition may continue into week two against Middle Tennessee State (3 PM CT SEC Network), and not be solidified until game three against Ole Miss at Bryant-Denny, Sept. 19th, an 8:15 PM CT/9:15 PM ET kickoff on ESPN.

The kicking game looks solid. Punter J. K. Scott is All-American like. He can flat out crush the ball. He's a game changer at punter and there are not too many punters in the country you can say that about. Adam Griffith is back from battling an injury that impaired his kicking last year, so he should be a lot better. Cyrus Jones, Chris Black and Oregon State transfer Richard Mullaney are 1-2-3 on the depth chart at punt returner. Not sure about Cyrus as a punt returner, haven't seen enough on him to know how good he will be. But he is a stellar athlete, and Black was a five star in high school and I'm expecting him to step up this year and have a big year at wide receiver. I've heard good things about Mullaney, the transfer. He could be a real factor in the passing game. And Cam Sims is another player that, when he gets healthy from his torn MCL and LCL in his knee, and it sounds like he'll be back sooner rather than later in what could be the most remarkable recovery from a major knee injury in recent college football history, with his 6'5" frame could be a huge asset in the passing game.

On kickoff return, the explosive Drake and Stewart could take some to the house for the Tide. Very explosive, game changing players as kickoff returners.

So I love this team. They're really outstanding. Quarterback needs to be settled by Ole Miss and the running backs need to stay healthy, but overall this is a very exceptional looking football team. The offensive line will be anchored by center Ryan Kelly, who's not only an excellent, physical player, but also a highly intelligent leader who can make the calls on the line and really help an inexperienced quarterback much like Barrett Jones did for A.J. McCarron for two years. By the way, Barrett is listed as the starting center for the St. Louis Rams on their depth chart. Good decision by the Rams. Alabama players are all over the NFL. It's remarkable really.

The Tide will also have Cam Robinson, all 6"6, 326 pounds of him anchoring the left tackle spot and massive guys all over the front. The o line should be outstanding with good depth. So this is definitely a playoff team. The tricky part is there are three teams with bye weeks before they play the Tide. The Tide goes to A&M on Oct. 17th after a bye week for A&M. Alabama hosts Tennessee October 24th  after a bye week for them and LSU plays the Tide after a bye week on Nov.7th at  Bryant-Denny. But Bama does get a bye week before they play LSU, too. But I'm from the school of thinking that it is good to keep playing. I actually think Alabama has an advantage playing teams coming off a bye week because the Tide will be game ready and those teams will have not played for two weeks. That's an advantage in my opinion. The only area where that could be a factor is injuries. They're always the X factor. An October 3rd date at Athens to play Georgia will be a tough one, but one I like the Tide to prevail in, but in a hard fought, highly physical contest. Of course, the big one will be Nov.28th, at Auburn. The Tigers are going to be outstanding on offense and much improved on defense. I was tempted to pick the Tigers as SEC champs, but they're not extremely deep on defense though they will be good and much improved under Will Muschamp. Gus's offense should be superb with the awesome Jeremy Johnson, Roc Thomas and Duke Williams and a ton of playmakers alongside and behind them and an outstanding offensive line; maybe the best in the country. Wow, that's a dominating o line at Auburn. So it's a tough call and it's on the Plains, but this Tide defense and a solid, if not spectacular offense, will barely prevail in this year's Iron Bowl in what should be an epic. I like Auburn to play in a New Year's Six Bowl though, the Sugar Bowl is highly doable for the Tigers,  and have an excellent season. I see Bama going 12-1 or 13-0 and AU to go 11-2. So I've got Bama over AU barely in my SEC title game and playoff.

TCU and Oregon

I also like TCU and Oregon. TCU returns 16 of 22 starters and are loaded. They have a hyper-explosive offense led by superstar quarterback Trevone Boykin, and a SEC-style defense which will make them the cream of the crop in the Big 12. Not having a championship game is problematic for TCU, but if they take care of all their business during the regular season, I see them getting to the playoff. I also like Oregon. I watched Oregon's spring game and they look as electric as ever on offense. Add to this dynamically loaded, playmaking offense Eastern Washington quarterback transfer Vernon Adams, who led the FCS in passing efficiency last year with a 183.13 rating, which was even better than Marcus Mariota's 181.75, and Adams threw for 3,483 yards and 35 TDs against eight ints. He's a stud and he will make the transition to FBS pretty seamlessly. He may struggle a little at first, but I'm a believer in him and this dynamic offense to win the PAC 12 title and make the playoff. Running backs Royce Freeman and Thomas Tyner are spectacular. And the Ducks' defense will be good enough to get them to the playoff.

There will be plenty of outstanding bowl match ups as well. I never underestimate the value of bowl games. You see some really good football played in bowl games. They're still a staple in college football and hopefully always will be even with the playoff. They should be.

So my playoff is:

Orange Bowl: Alabama vs. TCU

Cotton Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon

But we're just starting the season, so without any further ado here  is a look at the games in one of the most exciting times in sports; the start of the college football season. All the rankings are the coaches' poll rankings.

Wisconsin is solid and Sports Illustrated reported that quarterback Joel Stave is over the "yips" he had last year throwing the ball in which he threw nine TDs and 1o interceptions, and he'll be pretty good in the passing game, according to SI. But the Badgers, though they should be good in the Big Ten West, are not in the same class as Alabama. S and Kiffin should get more clarity on their quarterback situation and the Tide will roll here.

A lot of sports writers and sportscasters are bullish on the Tigers and I'm in agreement. Quarterback Jeremy Johnson will be superb, and so will running back Roc Thomas. Duke Williams looks like he's back in the coaches good graces and he can really be terrific if he keeps his act together. The o line anchored by Ole Miss transfer Austin Golson at center, Alex Kozan at right guard, who returns from missing a season last year due to injury, the inspirational  Shon Coleman at right tackle, the tough as nails Braden Smith at left guard,  and the massive Avery Young at left tackle, looks like it could be the country's best. They are huge, physical and deep up front. The defense will be much improved. I like the Tigers having Carl Lawson back from injury at defensive end and Montravius Adams should be a beast at defensive tackle along with Lawson. I like the linebacking corps led by Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy and I'm ready to see sophomore Tre Williams have a breakout year. He's a co-starter along with McKinzy and Frost right now. The highly talented Justin Garrett will man the other linebacker spot. The secondary looks very good with potential All-SEC corner Jonathan Jones and Michigan transfer Blake Countess manning the corners and Jonathan Ford and former Georgia standout Tray Matthews at safeties. That's a good secondary, though they're not that deep. I like this Tigers defense overall, it's just depth at linebacker and the secondary and all over the defense that keeps me from picking the Tigers to win the SEC. The offense is certainly going to be explosive. Ricardo Louis should have a big year at receiver returning kicks along with Ford. Marcus Davis or Jason Smith will return punts. Davis looks explosive and Smith is supposed to be but there's not much intel on either one. Daniel Carlson will be an excellent kicker and Kevin Phillips will punt. Not sure about Phillips. Will have to see him perform in game one.

Neck brace has worked on Auburn since the day after getting blasted 37-14 by Georgia in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 30th. But his workaholic preparation for Auburn will not be enough for Louisville.  Too much Roc Thomas, Jeremy Johnson and an explosive offense for the Loiusville defense to handle. Like the Tigers to take care of business in the Georgia Dome, then take care of business against Jax State at home a week from Saturday, Sept. 12th, then hit the road for a 2:30 PM CT CBS kickoff at Death Valley to face the LSU Tigers in what should be a classic. Like Gus and the Tigers to have a huge season and it's very close for them to be in the SEC championship game and the college football playoff. They're definitely right there.

Another marquee game for the SEC against a Power 5  conference opponent. Arizona State is for real. Kirk Herbstreit picked them in his playoff along with Ohio State, LSU and Baylor. Not buying that, but they're a very explosive, well coached football team. But I like the new Texas Gunslinger, Kyle Allen, to throw it all over the field against the Sun Devils. Allen looks poised to be a breakout player in the SEC and in the country. Kevin Sumlin has recruited extremely well the last three years and has talent all over the roster. He brought in John Chavis from LSU to be his defensive coordinator which was an outstanding hire. Chavis will make this defense more aggressive, more physical and a top flight unit in the next couple of years. There is a lot of returning young talent on that side of the ball and Sumlin and his offense are always going to be good just like Gus's is. While Arizona State could have a very good year and possibly win the PAC 12 South division, though I like UCLA there, I don't think can beat the Aggies, but it'll be quite an offensive game. It should be outstanding. Like Allen and A&M to throw it all over the field, run the ball some and play enough defense to come away with a hard fought victory over the Sun Devils.

This is a tough opener for Ball Coach against an up and coming UNC team under Coach Larry Fedora, who was really good at Southern Miss and is in his third year at Chapel Hill. SC has flown under the radar in the offseason because everybody has been saying Ball Coach is going to hang it up soon. If this year doesn't go well, that could happen, but I don't think it's going to happen. The Gamecocks will be much improved, they've got a good young quarterback in Connor Mitch, an all world receiver in Pharaoh Cooper, and plenty of playmakers on offense.  Jon Hoke has come to Columbia after a long stint in the NFL to co-coordinate the defense with Lorenzo Ward, who really needed some help after last season's defensive disaster. Hoke was Spurrier's defensive coordinator at Florida in 2000-01 and helped the Gators lead the SEC in total defense. He's proven in the NFL too, so this is a big pickup for Ball Coach. This can be a pretty good football team. Can they win the East? They have to go to Georgia, but they've proven they can beat the Dawgs on the road. They'll have to go to Tennessee and the Vols are much improved. They have to go to A&M,  to Missouri, and they play LSU at home, so they have their work cut out for them. But this can be a football team that can make some noise in the East if they can stay relatively healthy. Like Ball Coach and his team to get it done here.

Derek Mason says his team has forgotten about 2014, turned the page and are re-energized for 2015. He made coaching changes in the offseason, hiring James Dobson from Nebraska as his strength coach, Andy Ludwig from Wisconsin as his offensive coordinator, he hired a couple of young coaches to coach the wide receivers and safeties respectively, and he took over the defense as its coordinator. They were all good moves. I watched practice two weeks ago and the players were impressive looking physically. There is a lot of talent on this team, particularly on defense, and Coach Mason can really coach some defense. As Stanford's defensive coordinator, he helped Stanford shut down Marcus Mariota and the Oregon offensive attack two years a row in upset victories for the Cardinal over Oregon. He knows what he's doing on defense and he said he will be making all decisions on going for it, when to use a timeout, and when to go for two, etc... Ludwig is tough, smart and brings that mentality to the Vandy offense. I see a real change in this football team. They are going against a high powered offense though in the Hilltoppers, which averaged 44 points last year and 374 yards passing per game. They beat an undefeated Marshall team last year, which came into the game 11-0, 67-66, and won their bowl game, the Bahamas Bowl, 49-48 over Central Michigan. Their sixth year quarterback, Brandon Doughty, completed 68% of his passes last year, 337-of-552 for 4,830 yards, 49 touchdowns and only 10 ints. They're going to really give the Vandy defense a major challenge. But I think the Vandy defense is up for it and can do enough along with a better offense under Ludwig to get the W, which would be huge for Coach Mason.

Like the Dawgs to definitely take care of business here and Nick Chubb to go off as he makes his early Heisman statement. It's too early to worry about the Heisman, but Chubb is such an explosive, electric, game changing player. He just runs with reckless abandon and can run over people around them, cut on a dime and definitely take it to the house. He ran for 1,594 yards and 14 touchdowns and put on some clinics last year. Against Louisville in the Belk Bowl he ran for 266 yards and two touchdowns. It was spectacular. He's spectacular. He'll have Sony Michel and a rejuvenated Keith Marshall behind him for a powerhouse, take it to the house, running game. Grayson Lambert, the Virginia transfer, will get the start at quarterback for the Dawgs. Mark Richt may be in a similar situation as Nick Saban in that this could be an audition at qb with Bryce Ramsey being another quarterback who has plenty of talent, but not a lot of experience. Richt will play them both and see who's better as he prepares his team for a trip to Vandy a week from Saturday at 2:30 PM CT on CBS  and a home game against South Carolina two weeks from Saturday. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will have the Dawgs playing more stellar defense this year, too. Believer in Pruitt.  This could be a special year for the Dawgs.

The Rebels shouldn't have any problem here. They're auditioning quarterbacks, too. Chad Kelly, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly's nephew, he was kicked off the team at Clemson and transferred to Ole Miss, will get the start. But Hugh Freeze said the quarterback situation is "not set in stone." So here's another SEC team with a quarterback question that will be answered either in the first or second game. They have a really good defense led by stud defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, and their offense has playmakers. They should have a good season if their quarterback works out.

I'm expecting a good game here. Va Tech wore out the Buckeyes last year in Columbus, 35-21, and they've got a really good defense this year under long time cagey veteran defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The Buckeyes will squeak this one out in Blacksburg.
