Lane Kiffin has put together a fantastic season at FAU. The Owls are electric on offense led by sophomore running back Devin Singletary, who has rushed for 1,796 yards on 275 carries, 6.5 per carry. His rushing yards are 4th best in the country. Rashaad Penny of San Diego State tops the list at 2,027 yards, followed by Stanford's Bryce Love at 1,973 yards, and Jonathan Taylor at 1,847 yards. Also, Singletary has rushed for 29 TDs which leads the country. He's going to be fun to watch. Greg Howell has rushed for 600 yards and 5 TDs as Singletary's backup, and quarterback Jason Driskel has added 360 yards and 6 TDs.. Driskel has completed 166 of 253 passes, 66%, for 1,977 yards and 13 TDs against 4 Ints. His leading receiver is Harrison Bryant, who has caught 32 passes for 408 yards and 5 TDs. However, Bryant is questionable for tonight's game with a foot injury. He may play, but if he's not available, DeAndre McNeal (23-317, 2 TDs) and Kalib Woods (20-540, 4 TDs) will have to pick up the slack.
On defense, linebacker Al-Shaair Azeez leads the team in tackles with 133, which is tied for 5th in the country. Al-Shaair also has posted 7 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks. Linebacker Rashad Smith has put together a big year posting 89 tackles, 10 1/2 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. Safety Jalen Young has picked off 7 passes this season, which is tied for 1st in the country with Lukes Denis of Boston College and Josh Jackson of Iowa. Cornerbacks Shelton Lewis and Chris Tooley have 4 interceptions apiece. The Owls lead the country in interceptions with 20. Pretty impressive stuff.
Terry Bowden's Zips are led by quarterback Thomas Woodson, who has completed 159 of 278 passes, 57%, for 1,777 yards, 14 TDs against 9 ints. His leading targets are Tra'Von Chapman (51-463, 2 TDs) and Kwadarrius Smith (33-719, 7 TDs) The Zips leading rusher is Manny Morgan, who has rushed for 393 yards and 4 TDs. On defense, outside linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III is the leading tackler with 127, good for 18th in the country. Gilbert also has 8 1/2 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Cornerback Jordan George is the team leader with 5 interceptions. Akron is tied for 2nd in the country with Central Michigan and Iowa with 19 ints, right behind FAU.
I'm pretty bullish on Kiff and his team. They've been awesome winning 9 in a row since Sept. 30th. Kiff is controversial at times, but he sure has done a super job in Boca Raton. His name may pop up in the future for a bigger job. Right now, he's enjoying life in south Florida and he'll enjoy it some more tonight. Terry and his Zips may be in for a long night.
