UAB drop ninth straight to Memphis

Three-of-24 from the three-point arc. Not going to get it done. That's 12 1/2%. Shot 32 percent for the game from the field. Lost 70-65 before a packed house at Bartow. UAB drops to 23-6 and 11-4. Memphis moved to 22-8 and 12-3 and kept their tourney hopes alive. UAB plays at UTEP Saturday Night at 8 CT. and that looks tough as UTEP is the best team in the conference. Memphis probably has to win C-USA tourney to get in.

The NCAA hopes for the Blazers are dwindling. Now it's going to take a conference tournament title to get into the NCAA field. It's just tough for a team that was playing such good ball into mid-January and, at the time, looked like a good bet for the tourney. It's an uphill battle now. Such a great crowd, too. Eight thousand four hundred eleven with high hopes for a UAB victory. This team has just fallen on hard times. They were overachievers throughout the season. Just hit a wall shooting the ball and couldn't overcome that.

The Blazers actually outrebounded Memphis, 42-30. Elijah Millsap scored 19 and pulled down nine boards. Jamarr Sanders had 11 boards. But Sanders was two-of-eight from trifecta, Dexter Fields was 0-of-five and Millsap was 0-of-3. The Blazers were 21-of-65 from the field (32%).

They just have lost their shooting touch and they don't look like they're going to get it back.

Not much was expected from this team to start the season as Mike Davis had to grab players to field a team this year with senior departures and losing out on DeMarcus Cousins, who left for Memphis then Kentucky and some other heralded recruits. He scrapped together a pretty good bunch, who, from what I've  heard, work their tails off in practice and give tremendous effort on the floor and work hard in school. They're good kids.

They just had tough luck finding the basket and it came back to haunt them. Still played good defense and hustled, just struggled with their strokes.

It's not inconceivable that they won't beat UTEP and win the tourney, but it's a tough road to hoe especially the way they are shooting right now.
