Take on Vandy-UK yesterday

Great game, really a war. Defensive contest the whole way partly because both teams were playing great d and partly because neither team could hit shots. Vandy was two-of-20 from three-pointers, Kentucky wasn't much better at three-of-16. In a 40-minute game there are a lot of key plays, but a couple that stood out to me were Patrick Patterson's three-pointer late and Jermaine Beal's decision to kick it out to John Jenkins for a three-pointer with five seconds left rather than take the game-tying lay-up which he would have made had he kept on going to the basket. It was wide open, but he kicked it out. John Wall partially blocked Jenkins' attempt and Ky got the ball was fouled missed both foul shots then A.J. Ogilvy got a good look at the basket at the buzzer but rimmed it out.

But it was a classic. Two teams, one with great talent another with very good talent at home, going toe-to-toe.

Three things I learned:

1.Patrick Patterson is the leader of this Ky team. He holds the freshmen together and keeps them focused. DeMarcus Cousins may be more talented, but Patterson is the leader and a very good player himself.

2.Kentucky should go far in the tourney, maybe even win it. Like I said before, there are a lot of good teams this year and maybe not a great team, but there could be some great teams come tournament time. There some others like Kansas, Syracuse and Purdue who look like they could be great. And there are some darkhorses who could make a big statement in the tourney.

3.Vandy has a good team. They're not great yet, they play five sophs and are trying to still get the total chemistry down. They don't really have a vocal leader. Beal is quiet though a very good player, and Ogilvy can lead if he wants to. Vandy could make a statement; they have a shot. This team may be a year away from really contending when all those sophomores are a year older and Jenkins is a year older. Ogilvy may very well leave after this season, chances are pretty good, but that may be ok. Still like this team a lot this year. They compete hard. They just have to hit their shots to be a great team.

Great atmosphere at Memorial in Nashville. The students were into it as were the rest of the fans. There was a large contingency of UK fans, so it was pretty electric.

All in all a great college basketball game particularly on the defensive end. Kentucky could win it all and Vandy should be in the mix come tourney time.
