Kentucky is the favorite to win it all at this point. But they have an intriguing matchup with the Ivy Leaguers Thursday Night. Cornell has eight seniors and they're the best three-point shooting team in the country. They're confident, loose and I don't think intimidated by UK. It'll be hard for Cornell, but I expect them to give Kentucky a good game and if it's close late with Cornell leading, you never know. Duke plays Purdue Friday and that's a good matchup. Purdue has looked good in their first two games and are as gritty a team as Duke. They may be quicker than Duke. They'll give Duke everything they want and may beat them.
On another Kentucky note, if KY wins and West Virginia defeats Washington, that would make for a classic Elite Eight matchup. West Virginia likes to dictate the tempo of the game and Bob Huggins is a master strategist. West Virginia could beat Kentucky if both get by their Sweet 16 matchups.
Another game I'm looking forward to is Northern Iowa and Michigan State. Northern Iowa is a sound, solid if not great team with sharp shooters. Michigan State pulled out a thriller over Maryland yesterday at the buzzer. MSU will be without point guard Kalin Lucas, which will make their job even tougher. But they have shown a lot of resilience and played a great game yesterday against a very good Maryland squad. Should be interesting.
Ohio State plays Tennessee. I think Tennessee has a good shot though they've got to stop a smart, talented OSU team. Tennessee will have to match Ohio State shooting the ball. Ohio State has shooters in Evan Turner, Diebler and Lighty, so Bobby Maze, Scotty Hopson, Wayne Chism and company will have to bring their offensive games as well as their defensive games.
Syracuse plays Butler. Like the 'Cuse especially if they get their center back. Like them anyway.
Kansas State and Xavier should be a great matchup. K-State is a very good team, but I think Xavier has the firepower to upset them. Those Xavier guys are really outstanding, fast-paced basketball players who match up well with the Wildcats. Should be a great game there. The winner of that plays 'Cuse most likely and that should be a very good game.
Baylor-Saint Mary's in the other game. Like Baylor. Baylor is a fast-paced, athletic and exciting team that can go a good ways further if they shoot the ball well. Just don't think the Gaels can stick with Baylor.
Should be an exciting weekend of games.
