Aaron Johnson is becoming Mr. Clutch for the UAB Blazers. He sank a difficult layup with seven seconds left that lifted the Blazers to a huge 61-59 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd at the Henderson Center in Huntington, WV.
Johnson finished the game with 11 points, and was driving to the hole all night scoring on layups or feeding passes to teammates for scores. Howard Crawford led the Blazers (17-2, 5-0 C-USA) in scoring with 19 points and pulled down eight boards. Jamarr Sanders added 10. The Blazers only shot 37 % from the field and 27% from trifecta, but played tough on the defensive end and sank 22-of-31 free throws (71%). Sanders pulled down nine boards for the Blazers who outrebounded the much taller Thundering Herd 41-34.
Tyler Wilkerson led Marshall (15-4, 4-1) with 18 points. Daniel Pitts had 13 points and Hassan Whiteside, the 7'1" center for the Herd, had 11 points, 13 boards and five blocks. The Herd was one-of-nine from trifecta and shot 59% from the line.
UAB now plays host to the conferences' only other undefeated team Tulsa (16-3, 5-0) in a showdown at 7 p.m Tuesday at Bartow. No TV so try to make it out. This is a fun basketball team to watch.
