Huge win in Knoxville. As my nephew Tate said, "Ogilvy one, Chism 0." Kevin Stallings' first win over Bruce Pearl and UT in Knoxville. Jermaine "Dollah" Beal was tremendous. He hit a couple of deep trifectas; past NBA range. He's becoming the leader of this basketball team. I loved the enthusiasm of the Commodores. Those guys were so fired up on the bench. They wanted this game badly. Beal had 25 for Vandy. Was four-of-six from trifecta. A.J. Ogilivy added 12 points and five boards. Brad Tinsley, Jeff Taylor and John Jenkins each had 10.
The Dores were eight-of-14 from trifecta. Tinsley and Jenkins were both two-of-three.
Andre Walker is the unsung hero of this team. He doesn't put up the huge scoring numbers, but he does so much on the floor for Vandy. He had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Tinsley, who has found his shooting touch and is now playing stellar, added four assists.
J.P. Prince had 22. Was nine-of-10 from the field. He got into an altercation with Walker where he threw an elbow at him after Walker was guarding him closely. UT, to me, is a dirty team. They'll throw the elbows and push. You've just got to go toe-to-toe with them. Vandy did that last night.
Next up for Vandy (16-3, 5-0): Kentucky (19-1, 4-1) at Lexington at 3 p.m. Sat. on ESPN. Tennessee fell to 15-4 and 3-2. They play Sunday at home against Florida (15-5, 4-2) at noon on CBS.
Tough assignment for Commodores coming up. Kentucky is coming off a loss at South Carolina. It shows they're vulnerable at times. John Calipari has not been convinced his team is that great. They've played well, but there are some flaws. They get a little out of control. The frosh can get a little too excited and make mistakes. But their loss to SC was all SC. Devan Downey was great and SC just wanted that game so badly.
But this Vandy team will be highly competitive and could pull off the upset. This is a very challenging week for Dores, but they started it off with a bang with a win over their biggest rival. Sorry Rocky Top.
