After Derrick Caracter made a dunk with one second left, the UTEP team stormed the court as the Miners went on to the victory. Mike Davis was livid that the officials didn't call a technical foul. Davis was right. There should have been a technical called on the Miners, and UAB should have shot two free throws and had the ball. Aaron Johnson is a solid free throw shooter and could have sank them and sent the game into overtime. Very poor officiating by what I consider the worst officiating group in the country. The Conference USA officials are amateurs. They are terrible. Davis pointed out that it happened in the Washington State-Oregon game earlier this year when Wash State players stormed the court at the end of the game and Oregon shot two free throws. That's just pathetic officiating. The officials rationale was that the players can do that. That's not true. Still UAB had an 11-point lead in the second half and let it slip away. The Blazers once again shot the ball poorly (36% from the field) They did shoot better from trifecta (40%) as Aaron Johnson was four-of-five and finished with 16 points though Jamaar Sanders was one-of-seven. Shooting has been the problem since mid-January and may have ruined the Blazers' chances of making the tournament.
The Blazers get a first round bye at Tulsa for the tournament and will play the winner of the Southern Miss-Tulane game Friday at 2:30 on CBS College Sports Network. If they win, they would probably play Memphis at 3 or 5:30 on Friday. They still can win the C-USA tourney, but right now they're out.
